I had some problems understanding the Scottish accent. It seems that it's a hard accent, but it could be partly my mistake, too. I practice my listening in English essentially with Sean Carroll's podcast. I don't know from what part of the US is, but his accent is very clear to me (besides explaining physics very clearly, too).
I guess I should listen to more English. It's true that sometimes I listen to a movie or series, but infrequently. Podcasts are the key, but I'm not a superfan of them, and I don't want to quit reading time for podcast time...

Yesterday's afternoon at the Glasgow Worldcon was nice, too. I went to a talk by the Astronomer Royal of Scotland about if we live in a simulation. Of course, the answer was the it's a metaphysical question, not one that science can answer, but she played with the idea, and she was funny.
The next 2 talks I went to were about tropes in sf and bad science in sf. They were mostly light and funny. One thing that surprised me was the comment that appealing too much to the multiverse could be a sign of lazy writing.

@npub1knz…c73p I don't know about tsunamis, but for "normal" sea waves the speed depends on the deepness of the sea (shallow or deep). If for tsunamis is the same I guess it can depend on the exact route to Tanis.

@npub1c9m…9xjd Percival Everett's book is almost a comedy. It contains many jokes regarding nothing and its paradoxical nature. It has a somewhat intriguing plot, too. So far, I like it.

Percival Everett tells this joke in his "Dr No" novel, and what a better place than this to tell it (not Everett's original words but my translation to English):
"A mathematician is offered to choose between knowing God or a cold coffee. Why did he choose the cold coffee?

I've checked the top 10 books of the XXI century (of the list of 100) published by The New York Times, and unsurprisingly, it's a very English centred list.
It's essentially hard to believe (or directly, impossible to believe) that 5 out of the best 10 books of the XXI century are from the US, 3 from the UK and 2 from the "rest of the world".
The list was created from a survey of more than 500 experts. I guess most of them are from the UK or the US, and this basically proves how difficult it is to transcend your cultural heritage when evaluating art.

Greatly enjoyed the second book of Dune. The grandiloquent and baroque style, combined with the very space opera setting may not be everybody's cup of tea, but they definitely worked for me.
I want to continue with the 3rd volume. From the 3rd volume onwards I haven't hear very positive stuff, but well, we'll see. #sciencefiction #books
