If we can do it all on Nostr, let's try. Built from the ground-up, the right way.
Simplex does secrecy better, just as many other things have done things better than Nostr, at one point or still do.
If I can use my npubs to log into everything, whilst preserving my privacy, degree of anonymity and security, I'd like that and I know many others will too.
It's all about giving options.
It might just get other services such as Simplex to somehow integrate Nostr in one way or another (perhaps not identities, but other things).
At this point in Nostr's development, shooting down possibilities is like suggesting why use Nostr instead of something else.
For the past decade we've had to install tons of apps for tons of social circles with no interoperability.
Let's give interoperability a proper go, perhaps without sacrificing the rest, and we'll see where we land.

Important to note, Start9 doesn't have any networking problems per se, rather they went with a Tor-only approach, whereas many people prefer to expose their services over the clearnet.
With the next version, as you mentioned, they'll be introducing clearnet configuration, for better or worse (I say this as many people don't know how to maintain clearnet infrastructure, but seems to work well for Umbrel so far).
Also shout out for Proxmox - Use it professionally and on all my self-hosted setups, can't go back to anything else.

How can an implementation of NIP-17 by different developers be so different to the end user?
I understand it hasn't be widely implemented yet, but clients that have implemented it have issues.
Genuinely curious.
- #Amethyst and #0xchat seem to be the closest in similarity - They both communicate (mostly) fine between each other, and chats are created as they should. I think one thing in need of cleanup is that some messages on Amethyst are received as "template via 0xchat".
- #Coracle almost works, but for some DMs it creates a completely separate group chat when viewed on 0xchat. Further, some DMs are sent unencrypted with no option for encryption (if this has anything to do with inbox relays I'm unsure how when NIP-17 messages can be sent in other clients to/from the same users).
- Not sure what the deal with #Iris is. The Desktop app(hasn't been updated in a while) can only do groups, but these groups can't be joined by other clients. Web is missing this functionality entirely, including beta.iris.
I'd love to onboard other people and suggest "use this on your phone, and this on desktop/web", but we can't communicate.
Not sure if I'm missing something... Or if it's just too soon, even though what's there seems like it's supposed to work.

Use a nostr remote signer (NIP-46), such as Amber on Android. It will hold your key and apps have to ask it each time they want a signature from your key for an action.

Absolutely, but as you allude to, fiat doesn't like competition, and when those ramps are relying on the very thing they're supposedly competing against, you could see this from a mile a way.
Let's be clear, KYC and such other regulatory pressures have been on the Bitcoin's doorstep since 2014.
The first big reminder/warning of this I can remember was from Satoshi when they said the swarm was coming for us (Relative to Tor at the time, sure, but also, likely not).
Warning after warning, I personally got tired of it all and ditched all such attack vectors I could see - It's just easier than having to rely on doors that are constantly closing, and at more rapid pace as they goes on.
I think 10 years later, the UX has improved to the point there is no excuse to not be free.

Silent Payments have been implemented for Bitcoin.
It's just that they haven't been implemented end-to-end on any Bitcoin-only wallet.
They've only been implemented on wallets that include more than Bitcoin.

Logging relates to what's done on the VPN and IPs that connect in a medium/long/permanent-term basis.
IPs needn't be logged. Obviously servers are aware of them to accept connectivity, but they aren't logged, all data is ephemeral and processed in real-time.
Regarding number of devices logged, that's fairly easily worked around. The client has to be connected to your account. That session ID can present a device count + 1 status to your account.
I'm not sure how Proton specifically does it, but as someone who works in the field, there are multiple ways to have that covered.

Do self-custody options not have the UX you want? Build it.
At this point in time, a Bitcoin wallet that only does on-chain TXs is DEAD-SIMPLE to use. You have TWO buttons - A SEND and a RECEIVE button.
We're crossed the line between lack of friction in self-custody, and pushing custodial for user-dependency.

Bitcoin, cannot be "married" to fiat. Fiat is intrinsically the antithesis of Bitcoin. They CANNOT work together without MAJOR consequences to the users and the businesses. We've already started seeing this with KYC data breaches, and that's just one example. People's ENTIRE financial track history becomes exposed because of these businesses.
I still wonder, to this day, how someone had the brilliant idea of:
"Bitcoin for the first time allows for self-custody, true sovereignty. Perfect! Let's make a Bank!"
Seriously, how do these people go to sleep at night knowing full well what they're setting up their users for in the future, just as we've seen in the fiat world when your offload RESPONSIBILITY to a third-party instead of EDUCATING the user.

The panel with their CEO and Russel Brand was incredibly hypocritical.
They said they "solved the infrastructure problem" - No, they didn't. They just knew where to host their stuff, for now. They're still centralised in many ways.
They say they're all about free speech - What's the point without being censorship resistant? They literally geo-block access.
They said they were open to any new technology that would make their mission more efficient but none existed - How disconnected do you have to be when Nostr is even a thing?
These companies stating their missions is freedom of speech while trying to get around the limitatioms of the current system, choosing to geo-block entire nations and close down communications lines beteeen citizens is treading the line without crossing it because they're not in it for the fight.

Early internet protocols also weren't scalable nor usable by normies.
Many faded out of use and new ones became the defacto standards.
Yet, the foundation is all still there.
At the end of the day, layers are just an abstraction that most people won't even be aware of - They'll be aware of applications and how to use them. If that means locking sats into a LN channel via an on-chain TX they'll do so. If that means creating VTXOs to be able to retain self-custody whilst transacting cheaply, they'll do so. It's possible one of those UXs will win out over the other too.
I think it's the UXs that will really need focus at some point soonish, and that UX will naturally streamline and standardise which protocols are used in other layers.

Some clients (amethyst in this case) shows a generic heart, but if you expand you can see all the reactions.
So it I think at a protocol-level, (all) reactions are built-in (whether it's an emoji, or even a GIF), it just depends on how some clients display them. See below.

I'm using a self-hosted version but pretty sure it's up-to-date.
I see a "reaction" button instead of a like/dislike. Check under Settings, you should have Quick Reactions, and you can edit these. It's possible the Like/Dislike are just your preset ones.
I'm sure there's some client-side limitations, but across noStrudel , Amethyst and 0xchat, all reactions show as expected.

I run my own nodes and use their functionality everyday.
Is it a perfect experience? No, but that's why we build on it.
A solution to challenges imposed on the finality layer needn't be perfect from the get-go.
I've heard no one suggest Lightning to be the only scaling solution either, but you act like that's fact.
Truth of the matter though, is that the foundation is sound. That's where you want to build the most regardless of the challenge based on the foundation's constraints, because no other project will achieve what it has achieved - It was a happy accident.
The state very much has a problem with BTC, it just can't do anything about that and we've seen this across the years. When a move is futile against your opponent, you don't expend the energy - You find other ways to attack.
Either way, stick to your monero, because Time will tell.
The moment one of us swaps Bitcoin for monero or vice-versa, we'll know what that means.

It's like a frickin' epidemic these days.
Seeing all the monero peeps out these days is just so par for the course - Limitations of Bitcoin are vocalized and suddenly someone has ALL the solutions at the settlement layer with no trade-offs. It's PERFECT! And yet....
It's not as decentralized - You can't recreate Bitcoin's level of decentralization.
It's not as secure - You don't have as much energy backing it.
XMR makes a ton of elements confidential to provide privacy, but security through obscurity isn't security at all.
And with that, you've lost your entire foundation with which to build upon.
Best be aware of Bitcoin's limitations (by design), understand them, and build from there.
For a moment, think about how ironic it is that Monero users are taking sats over lightning.
