My kid is staying home from school again today.
Not because she's sick.
But because there was a school shooting in Georgia last week, and yesterday some idiot made a Tiktok video threatening entire school districts all over the country. Including ours.

I recently found out some news about someone I've known and loved all my life.
This is a person I've had what feels like an odd relationship with: at times extremely close (as in, I was instrumental in helping them through acute grief immediately after their spouse died) and at other times so distant as to feel indifferent and cold to me.
I don't think I ever resented or felt bitter over it. I just always felt a mix of puzzlement and hurt. I never wanted to end the relationship...

Went with my parents #today to their attorney, as they want me (only child) to be aware of all processes in place when they pass & I inherit.
Not things I particularly enjoy pondering, but these conversations are necessary. As a family, we've had too many situations over the past few years in which the deceased didn't make adequate plans or inform heirs of the plans, leading to all sorts of unpleasantness.

Suicide results when a human can no longer see a way out of the unbearable pain they're living in. Nex's biome was composed of struggle, difficulty, distress, and unbearable pain. Getting beaten up in a school bathroom is traumatic even to a person who lives in a generally supportive, healthy environment.
Add the physical and emotional trauma of assault to a biome of torment and pain, and from the perspective of the victim, any "way out" irises shut until light no longer penetrates.

Thinking of the church I was raised in. Girls were made to dress "modestly."
Cover up, don't show skin.
Because that was God's will for young ladies growing into godly women of wisdom.
And we should want to avoid being a "stumbling block" for the boys, our "brothers."
It annoyed me then.
It enrages me now.
GIRLS AND WOMEN ARE NOT TOOLS FOR USE IN THE SOCIO-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF BOYS AND MEN.
Forcing us to make ourselves happily available for this purpose renders us LESS than human.

That's the jaded cynic in me talking, I guess. I want to be optimistic that there are still some who will come to their senses who haven't already. But how to get them there?

I haven't watched this and probably won't watch it because
1. my anxiety about #COVID is already high enough
and
2. I am not one who still needs convincing that #LongCovid is one of the most dangerous illnesses we've seen in a very long time and in the next few decades it's likely to change everything about how our world functions.

I have a tiny mystery plant! I was trying to save a philodendron cutting that had sprouted roots in water. But I didn't get it out of the water soon enough, and most of the roots rotted. So I thought maybe it would do better in dirt, so I planted it in this pot.
It did not, in fact, do better.
It died.
But while the philodendron was struggling and I was hoping, something else sprouted in the pot!

But the pandemic has caused what I theorize is mass PTSD. (For what the anecdote is worth, my therapist agrees with me.) One of the results is that the inability to think critically has been highlighted in many people who are traumatized enough that they can't mask their throughtlessness anymore.
In so many ways, COVID hasn't *caused* a crisis. It has merely thrown into stark relief the crisis we were already in.
