@npub1x0f…xzau I like this view in general, but I often worry about its consequences. For instance, instead of pushing the city to improve certain aspect of my kids Kindergarten, we could just do it ourselves (and we do). But doesn't this lead to an erosion of responsibility on the cities part? And does it not lead to a separation between those communities who can and those who cannot afford to fix their issues by themselves?

But in your thread later you talked about “people who believed in AGPL as if it were a magic bullet”, and no word of the more nuanced view that was actually expressed.

#[0] many reasons, among them that it’s not for profit . But also because of its decentralization *feature*. It doesn’t need to be enforced factually to be effective.
By the way, I appreciate what you do for the fediverse, but I don’t appreciate how you caricature people in this question just because they don’t share your opinion.

#[0] How many users are on hosting services like masto.host? That's a form of centralization, too, and Musk could just buy those. Should we also lobby against such services, then?
You seem to think that people like Musk can only be deterred if confronted with a huge network of relatively small instances all of which he would need to buy. But I think the real deterrence is that the protocol/software is open, that it's easy to start new servers and that accounts can be migrated.

#[0] #[1] Of course, I’m always thinking of an opt-in search. And I’m sure that most people who ask for fulltext search also don’t want it to look for people who don’t want to be found. But they want to be able to find everything posted by people who want to be found.

#[0] #[1] does the decentral nature really preclude this? The search index wouldn’t need to be decentralized. Or at least not in the same way as the instances are. Maybe it could be like DNS. There are many DNS servers you can query, and if one of them starts to implement policies you don’t like, you switch.
You are right about the relevancy bit but I’m not sure how the distinction helps here…

#[0] #[1] Well I for one did come here because of the decentralization, but I see it as a means of protection against Big Social, not as an end in itself. As a consequence, I think mastodon doesn't need to wear decentralization on its sleeve. Users don't need to know more about it than they know about email, which is basically nothing.

I'm intrigued because I would think that ultimately it's the people who run Big Social that are the problem and centralization is just a tool they use (and decentralization is a tool to fight them).

#[0] I agree with #[1] that mastodon should be a place even for users who don't care about decentralization (if you hate it, then it might be hard, but who hates it qua decentralization?) Not everyone has the time or inclination to think these things through. It's like saying, "if you don't care about prime numbers, encryption is not for you." No, I want to use encryption and be secure without understanding how prime numbers are involved.
