My heart goes out to xz. A single maintainer, who was clearly in a rough place with mental health, screaming out to the world for some help and additional contributions, and somebody shows up wanting to help. Could you imagine how happy that maintainer was? They were no longer alone.
And it turns out the only reason somebody wanted to help them was nefarious. I can’t imagine how they feel right now as everyone is blaming them. I hope they’re ok.

Some "web3" thing raised $45,000 to fund adding their weird crypto wallet based video transcoding network directly into the core of Owncast, specifically saying they want it to become the default and get everyone to use it.
I obviously said that's not happening. So I'm curious how this is going to play out.

@npub1j46…3gm7 One thing I think is interesting about this question of connections between open source, UX and funding that I don't think is ever mentioned.
When it comes to open source, it's assumed that developers will contribute their time to projects because they care about them and are passionate. But it's assumed that UX people will do it only if money is involved. And I don't generally think this assumption or connection is wrong if you look at the current landscape.
Not that I don't think people shouldn't get paid, but most people who work on open source will never get paid, so passion is what's left.

One pretty negative thing about being single is when you have any kind of medical procedure and they expect somebody around you to help, you don’t. I could use that person tonight.

I just read a blog post where “ActivityPub” and “Mastodon” were used interchangeably.
I know this is not the hill I should die on. But it is a real problem that the Fediverse is being handed over to a single individual, and nobody seems to care.
It’s kind of like when your Grandma calls the web “The Facebook” or your Aunt says “I was on The Google checking the scores on ESPN”.
But this time it’s supposed to be open. It’s supposed to be decentralized. It’s not supposed to be one company owned by one person. It’s not supposed to be one implementation in one piece of software.
Just like you didn’t want everyone to call the web “Facebook” you shouldn’t want to call the Fediverse “Mastodon”.

The recent meeting of the Social Web Incubator Community Group led to a lot of discussion around how we can collectively assist and improve the experience around building for the #Fediverse using #ActivityPub and related protocols. One suggestion that excited people was for Fediverse developers to convene around the real-world challenges around implementation.
We hope to take advantage of this momentum by getting together to discuss how we might all assist each other, build documentation, tooling, testing and education resources a la the Mozilla Developer Network.
If your project is big or small, new or old, or you're thinking of building something on the Fediverse I urge you to be represented at this call. Mark your calendar.
