When it comes to open source, it's assumed that developers will contribute their time to projects because they care about them and are passionate. But it's assumed that UX people will do it only if money is involved. And I don't generally think this assumption or connection is wrong if you look at the current landscape.
Not that I don't think people shouldn't get paid, but most people who work on open source will never get paid, so passion is what's left.
