I'm not a big fan of Java but I'm tempted to learn Clojure solely because Java seems to be the only language that has GUI libraries that don't require learning an essentially completely separate standard library (i.e. Qt), actually work and are feature-complete (i.e. every language's typically experimental native GUI toolkits), and aren't just bindings to GTK.

Question for non–North-American photographers, especially German ones: do you use the DIN system for film speed at all?
For those unaware, the “ISO” standard for film speed is actually a combination of the ASA and DIN systems, but everyone (English-speaking at least) seems to only use the ASA half and ignores the DIN half (proper notation for ISO would be “ISO 400/27°”, which is ASA 400 and DIN 27°), but now I'm wondering if even Germans still use DIN at all (since AFAIK West and East Germany were the only places DIN had substantial uptake)

Just learned possibly the most cursed C fact IMO: array[i] is equivalent to *(array + i) per the spec, which means i[array] works exactly the same, since the + operator is commutative. It also works for multidimensional/nested arrays and the “outside” index doesn't even need to be a symbol, so you can even do things like 0[array]1, equivalent to array[0][1] and *(*(array + 0) + 1). This is a new level beyond pointer decay, which generally makes sense even if it's irritating

Honestly, I really like the mostly manual Arch installation process. I fully understand the complaints about it and would never recommend it to beginners or people who want they're computer to Just Work (and 99% of the time I personally fall into the latter category). But if you want to start getting an idea of how it's set up under the hood then it's nice. And if you're like me and *extremely* picky about what's installed on your system and how it's configured, then it works out great.

I'm no Mac expert so there's probably better programs out there, but for a C compiler I use THINK C (also THINK Pascal) and/or Macintosh Programmers Workshop, and just stick with TeachText for text editing. For a word processor I use ClarisWorks, but there's probably much better out there, that's just what was already installed on my Mac when I got it lol

@npub1te6…zc4l Oh yeah, the host controller itself most likely needs drivers (strange to think that any controller actually used in production wouldn't have drivers for every OS, but I guess Haiku is such a small project), but then afterwards you don't need to go and write drivers for every single onboard peripheral as well, they all can just fall under the standard USB device classes or otherwise common drivers

@npub1te6…zc4l I knew trackpads and keyboards were usually all wired up like that, so no surprise most everything else is too. It's very unlikely on a laptop you'd even be able to expose enough physical ports to completely occupy the host controller, and the operating system almost certainly has support for those USB devices already so just wire everything together like that and save needing custom bus hardware and needing to write drivers. (Although IME integrated webcams usually aren't plain USB video class devices and do need special drivers for some reason)

I honestly don't know why everyone portrays pointers as the most complicated thing a beginner programmer could possibly need to understand. Like yeah, there are uses of them that are complicated, but the basics seems really really trivial to me (I understood it within an hour when I first taught myself C). I guess if it's your first exposure to needing to know when to use meaningless characters as operators (* and &) then maybe I can sorta see it?
IMHO & IME, languages like Python that always use pass-by-reference are a lot harder for a beginner to reason about, because you get shit like “if you assign a variable to another and then ‘change’ the new variable, then it changes the original variable too since they both reference the same object. *Except* if you reassign instead of mutate the variable. And except for this arbitrary [to a beginner] set of things that are copied for no reason [to a beginner], but even though they got copied we still say it's ‘pass-by-reference’.”

So when you see any number of movies with younger actors with the crappiest, most unrealistic dialogue, I wonder what leads to it. Like obviously the writer is out of touch, but do the actors not tell the director and script supervisor “uhh… no one talks like this”? Even if they're twenty-year-olds pretending to be teenagers, they should be at least a bit more in touch.
I wonder if it's more the younger actors not feeling able to tell the director that it's just blatantly wrong, or if those kinds of directors just insist the writing is perfect and refuse to let anyone change it

Honestly, I really don't like full-size keyboards with the numpad and everything. Either pushes the mouse way the hell off to the side or makes the main keyboard off-center enough that I can no longer reliably touch type (and it gets uncomfortable anyways).
Unless you're doing numeric data entry all day, I don't really see any strong value in a numpad when it makes everything else so uncomfortable. Although IMO Home/End/PgUp/PgDown are pretty mandatory and it's frustrating how compact keyboards don't even have them available on layers, let alone as real keys (80% & 75% layouts are fantastic)
