They're very good. A bit information-dense, but I like that, and the writing is always good. I love the way that so many of the main characters are *nice* (very Becky Chambers, in other words).

Reading a preview copy of the third in the Shantivira series by Fay Abernethy. It's just as heart-warming and complex as the previous two, and STILL makes me wanna live on a spaceship!

I live in southern Sweden now, but I originally come from the Isle of Man, which looks much like the Welsh landscape, where that lead mine was. Hills are the main thing I miss about being in this part of the world. It's all very flat here.
Here are some pics of the Isle of Man that I took back in 2013. It was the first time I'd been back for 15 years and I was blown away by how beautiful it is. As a kid, you kind of take it for granted. I guess it was the same for you!

"Subarctic" sounds very dramatic to me, even though I live in Sweden now. The landscape in those pics looks very lunar but all around it is very green, which I guess wasn't the case where you grew up? I do love a bit of industrial history!

The joys of being at a very small uni!
I do (somewhere) have the extremely moody and dramatic photos I took on our first date, which involved a trip to a former lead mine (!) - now sadly all tidied up and made safe, but at the time it looked like the last few pics on this site:

Thank you! Yes, it was a peculiar thing. My ex always insists that he knew who I was (ie who was playing the character) but I certainly had no idea that it was him! I still remember being a little intimidated when I realised who it was. I'm not sure I'd ever have approached him IRL!

Right, now I have everyone's attention, what should I be using for online meetings instead of Zoom?
Only for me and at most half a dozen other people, all freelancers (in other words, not all from the same company).
I don't mind paying, but I'd rather it wasn't *very* expensive as I only need maybe 1-2 meetings a week.

Yeah, I've already had a mate saying "Pah! 2800 baud rate was all we had".
I'm not actually sure how fast(slow) my first connection was, because after I finished my MA in 1991 I was offline for about 8 years and missed all the very slow bits!

I'm really loving how Mastodon has become a refuge for all the grizzled seafarers on the ocean of the internet. They pop up in my feed and their bios all say something like
"I've been online for longer than the internet. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. 56k modems on fire in the light of Usenet. I watched IRC forks glitter in the dark near the Gateway 3000. All those moments will be lost in slop, like tears in rain. Time to deshittify."

Dashlane. The extension works fine with Firefox, but makes things fall over fairly quickly with LibreWolf. Like I say, I don't actually care. At least this time I know why it's happening. And we need to get used to non-frictionless interactions if we want to do away with the Googleverse and its ilk.

I'm on LibreWolf again too. And this time I've worked out how to stop tabs crashing - disable my password manager extension. I just switch it back on when I need it. A bit of a faff, but still waaaaay better than the alternative

Wow, I've never even heard of an escrow statement - what a weird system! In Europe you just buy your house and the local council would be extremely unpopular if they tried to increase property taxes by that much in that length of time. They've gone up a lot in the UK in the past couple of decades, but even there not to that extent (and here in Sweden by much less again). Hiding tax increases and then just springing them on you at the end of the year is horrible.

Early May, probably. Everything looks lovely but the prices haven't got too expensive. You might even get a few pleasantly mild days. It's also one of those places that does several seasons in one day, so you should get *some* sunshine.

Sometimes being Manx is weird. "The Laxey Wheel? Yeah, I suppose it's quite impressive. The TTs? Yeah, I guess they're quite exciting. The trams and the steam train? Oh, they're fun, yes. All those gorgeous glens and beaches, and the hills? I mean, they're alright."
(A few years back I visited the island for the first time in about 15 years and I was absolutely blown away by how beautiful it is. When you live there all the time you get used to it.)
