OK, I'm guessing here. I don't know "good" ISA VGA cards, and the ones I know they're good on the 286 aren't available for this PC/XT 8086, so I'm going to assume that an ISA VGA with 1MB of RAM should perfom OK.

Makes me wonder if the tests I did with the 8086 would change substantially if I used a better VGA than the generic one that I know now that can't handle the game even with the 286 🤔

Trying some other ISA VGA cards on the 286 (all via 86box), and getting some interesting results.
Not all VGA cards were the same: some run, some crawl.
I assumed a VGA card was a VGA card, but I was wrong. You need a good one.

OK, without the timer and booting FreeDOS, it works on a 286 (and pretty smooth, yay!).
Let's try a 8086 now.

If I don't access any data (so DS doesn't matter), there's no crash.
So I think we can agree that DS is not right.
I'm going to park the timer for now because I'm not using it and focus in why it doesn't work in an older machine.

OK, so last night I spent way too much time with this and today I tried something silly and... oh!
So I was trying the game with MSDOS 3.3 and it fails even on a 386; but then I try FreeDOS on a 386 and it works fine. There you have it.

The slug traps are working very well, and looks like the tomatoes and cucumbers are going to survive.
I'm buying the cheapest beer: Coop triple hop, 5.5% ABV. I haven't tried it but I can say it kill the slugs dead!
One bottle keeps the trap going for 4 to 5 days 🤘
