Cool. Lack of knowledge of Verilog (or any FPGA development) is also what keeps me from messing around with this.
It seems like your system may scratch the exact itch I have with the X16 (not that I dislike that at all).

On an 816 system like yours with the 24-bit bus, that would ease things up a lot.
But the VERA still has only 128k of VRAM - not enough to double-buffer a 640x480x8bpp or hold a few large tilesets. A few X16 devs were discussing that it'd be nice to have a 512K VERA or something, but of course that can't be ABI/API-compatible with the current VERA.
Have you thought about doing something like that?

This is an unlisted mention, and is a curious question and not a "why don't you just" one. ;) But not a DM because the answer may be of interest to others.
I am a Commander X16 owner. I could drop a 65816 in my X16 and it would work just fine, and I know folks who have done so.
However, because of the architecture of the X16 (16-bit address bus even with an 816), the system memory space is limited to 64K (more behind banking).
