This is an unlisted mention, and is a curious question and not a "why don't you just" one. ;) But not a DM because the answer may be of interest to others.
I am a Commander X16 owner. I could drop a 65816 in my X16 and it would work just fine, and I know folks who have done so.
However, because of the architecture of the X16 (16-bit address bus even with an 816), the system memory space is limited to 64K (more behind banking).
