Portuguese writer José Agostinho de Macedo was born #OTD in 1761.
Macedo was the first to introduce from abroad and to cultivate didactic and descriptive poetry, the best example of which is his notable transcendental poem Meditation. Portuguese poet Nicolau Tolentino de Almeida was born #OTD in 1740.
He was the foremost Portuguese satirical poet of the 18th century. A good metricator, he composed sonnets, odes, memorials and descriptive and caricatural satires with an ironic and comic tone about the pettiness of customs and traditions, attachment to appearances and everyday vices. Dutch poet and novelist Jacob van Lennep died #OTD in 1868.
He wrote in various genres, including historical novels, poetry, and plays. Among his most famous works is the novel "De Lotgevallen van Ferdinand Huyck" (The Adventures of Ferdinand Huyck), which remains a classic in Dutch literature.

French literary historian Léon Gautier died #OTD in 1897.
Gautier rendered great services to the study of early French literature, the most important of his numerous works on medieval subjects being a critical text with translation and introduction of the Chanson de Roland, and Les Épopées françaises.
