Application is a leaf service. Nothing else depends on it.
Workload is a bundle of applications serving the purpose of the server. If you remove these services from a server, you wouldn't pay for running it.
Monitoring service running on a server is an application but not a workload.

I wish our language lessons in school were focused less on grammar and more on communication.
Instead of training the declinations, they would ask something like: rewrite this phrase to sound angry, unsure, sad, excited or childish. Than give the result to the classmate and ask how does it sound and compare the results.
Or write a clickbait headline, and then the informative one to the same article.
Or write a support request to IT.

I am really puzzled by the fact that the company with so many customers had not implemented some sort of sharding for its customers and didn't introduce a staged rollout.

Years ago I worked in the IPTV company. We built software for those small boxes which you would connect to your TV before TVs became "smart".
We were updating those boxes remotely over Internet. And our biggest fear was that we will brick them.
So we had tests, but also a rollout strategy where update would go first into a central region, which is well connected and well-covered by the offices, but not as densely populated.

Honestly, one of the most exciting things I saw in CERN was the report about the state of the OpenStack infra which stated that all hypervisors (~1600 of them) have been updated to EL 9 and they have only two remaining #CentOS 7 machines left.
This is so refreshing to see the infra team doing its job correctly and not waiting for the EOL date to start planning their migration efforts.
Unlike some of the enterprise customers, which are going to come on June 30 saying "EOL, what EOL?"

I think O2 wins the top place on my personal list of design failures.
They "upgraded" the app so that it can not load without internet. At all.
I mean, what do they think I use their app for?
Casually open it to check new "special offers"?
I open it _only_ when the internet stops working to see if it might be caused by the negative balance. And the only question I have then is how do I get my internet back. There is no other reason to open this app ever.

Ok, my second* royalty-free AI innovation idea:
We do a website, chatPT-7o.ai, which looks exactly like ChatGPT, but internally is a python prompt (IPython?).
Basically, ChatGPT skin for Jupyter Notebook. Where all error messages are ignored and replaced with a random fortune quote.
And then we publish a draft of a research article on how this novel approach to add occasional brackets in the prompt string can reduce LLM hallucinations by 93,6%.

The Calendar UX issue only non-native speakers can understand:
Almost every time I refer to Tuesday or Thursday I do a quick double check on which one is which.
I usually try to do it by a quick look at the calendar. But if you shorten the names to a single letter, they look the same.
Thus in the current Gnome calendar, there is no way to see what is the full name of the weekday for May 28.

I am binge-replaying #Myst series this week.
Some years ago I got the full set on GOG, but at that time wine was not ready and lutris was not available, so I couldn't get them running.
But it seems we finally have reached the state of Wine and #Fedora where Myst I - IV work flawlessly.
The controls feel a bit flaky but overall it is still as immersive and epic as I remembered.

It was of course purely random, but it worked like a trap forcing me to look for common properties trying to find some pattern again and again and again..
If you ever watched Beautiful Mind, you get the idea.
I am kind of afraid of generative AI stuff, because of that effect. You get a pile of random nonsense, and you try and try and try to make sense out of it...

When I worked in Moscow I spent 1.5 hours on a subway daily.
And there was one ad in the subway train which literally tortured me for a year.
It was a schema of subway lines, where all the stations were replaced with some generic activities like vacation, family, walking in a park..

#CentOS 7 EOL is such a huge event for the industry, that everyone is trying to get a share of it with good and bad intent and marketing.
There are so many unresolved questions, postponed decisions and just poor planning, which all are exploding in that very last moment, because 10 years ago everyone just decided not to think about "complex stuff".
I don't even want to argue on CentOS or RHEL side. Make your own choices.
I want to say - piling up problems for 10 years is bad.

The second is that "data-driven" people put so much effort into collecting and measuring data, that they forget they need to develop a theory to use it. And that developing a theory is a different skill set.
No, you can not develop a theory by piling up data.
While yes, I know, if you apply AI to a pile of data you can do cluster analysis and pattern matching. But developing of a theory is none of those things.

And there are two points:
First is that when people say data-driven, they usually imply that it is objective.
They say: "You can argue with me, but it is not me, it is data, which says it!"
But data doesn't speak. It can not make conclusions.
And you absolutely can and should argue with people who hide behind that "data speaks for itself" position.

It is your theory of how thermometer works, which allows you to make conclusions about room temperature based on a single value on the screen.
You can not derive this theory from the data. It is just not there.

You look at it, it shows the number on a display. You think it is a room temperature.
But room temperature is already an abstraction. It is the interpretation of the number you see, which you make based on a ton of assumptions included.
You assume that that the room has a more or less stable temp over a period of time, and that that display is a thermometer, and it checks the air, and the air freely circulates in the room...

Hot take:
There is no such thing as "data-driven". Data does not drive, it exists. There is "agenda-driven, supported by data".
And I don't mean it as a negative thing.
To make sense out of data you have to have a theory, the hypothesis which you are trying to support. This theory gives you the way to interpret the data points you have collected.
And while the data is objective, the interpretation is not. It can be wrong. It will require adjustments the more you develop your theory.

When people say CI as a system running tests, it totally makes sense to NOT have one global CI system for a project like kernel.
But when we discuss CI as a framework so that various CI systems can be hooked into it, and provide test feedback in a way that project developers can act on it - then you do need a more generic approach to it.
Which of course goes back to that kernel development process needs better APIs than unstructured mails.

Well, I am usually the first one to rant about Jira and cloud services, but I did try Jira integration with Miro board today, and I liked it.
There is something oddly satisfying in moving the cards on the board.
Unlike Trello it is a free-form movement, and you can group, arrange and order tasks in a non-prescribed way.
So if any one of you is looking into development of a lightweight issue tracker, consider this to be a feature request.

This reminds me: Over last 15 years I made at least three attempts to start reading the ITIL book.
The problem is - I can not get past the first paragraph. It is like you read words, and they look clever and then you ask - what each of those words supposed to mean? Nothing.
What this whole sentence can be summarized to? Nothing again.
My brain gets overloaded from trying to dig into the content and falls asleep by the end of the second sentence.
And it was even before the AI times.

GitHub doesn't scale to anything beyond the single developer working on his own sideproject, imho.

I really really don't get how people can complain about Gerrit Code Review interface, if they ever used GitHub Code Review UI.
Just go to a completely random PR and try to find a comment from the reviewer on the page:

And this is our "industry standard" which everyone tries to replicate?
