Friends of energy efficiency - the Light Video 0.1.0 #Flathub update is out, build with #gtk4 4.14 and #GStreamer 1.24.1.
This should be the first app targeting the #linux / FDO desktop enabling Wayland video offloading (think zero-copy playback) by default. In many cases (actually more than I expected) this can improve battery lifetime - and on low-end devices even playback performance - significantly.

One more question here: GTK3 already didn't use accelerated 2D stuff on X11 any more, right? I.e. it was all cairo and thus CPU drawing. Is there still a terminal that does use the old acceleration (and is there still a semi-maintained DDX driver for the device here), maybe xterm? I just wonder if VTE with GTK4 on Wayland is now the best performing terminal from the rendering side, even on such old hardware :)

@npub1njt…x0uv Pretty impressive! Just to be sure: this was on Wayland, correct? Because VTE with GTK4 will likely be bit slower on X11 because it can't use EGL - and GLX doesn't support (sane) partial damage. I guess it's less important in the test here, but for use-cases like typing a command it's quite a difference whether only one character is redrawn or the whole window.

For #GNOME app folks: IMHO we need to think about what to do with Totem / Gnome Videos. It has not yet been ported to #gtk4, which is increasingly becoming an issue.
Apart from not fitting nicely UI wise, it prevents us from using the newly introduced #wayland hardware offloading (zero-copy playback) and, crucially, from (properly) supporting HDR content going forward.
I.e. we either need a port - or should consider making an alternative a core app to focus on.

@npub1njt…x0uv Just tested VTE main (with #gtk main and Console/kgx 45) on my two slowest test laptops, a Thinkpad T400 and a PineBookPro.
What can I say - wow!
Without your patches using Console maximized feels a bit like going through ssh on wifi on both of them, the PBP being slightly worse - typing is just very sluggish.
With your patches things suddenly happen almost instantly - and using the terminal is actually fun!

These patches should help #GTK4 performance on drivers/devices using the GLES3 backend - besides #Asahi notably #panfrost and #v3d, maybe also some #freedreno ones (those where the hardware doesn't support GL 3.2).
If your distro targets such devices and doesn't ship GTK 4.12.x, it might be worth backporting those.
Not an expert here, but I *think* it's mainly the use of VAOs.

#Firefox (nightly) just got rounded bottom corners \o/
The border radius comes from the #gtk3 theme and can be overwritten by e.g. the #libadwaita FF theme.

Pretty cool milestone for cameras on the #[0] and the #[1] + #[2] stack today: the #[3] images (the stock distro) for both #[4] and #[5] now come with all required packages by default.
Finally I can simply install cheese and get an image.
Yes, the rotation is still wrong. Yes, there are still features missing that you'd expect from a modern camera stack. Yes, there are still bugs and suboptimal image quality. But we got a working base now.
