Memories! I flew into Fairbanks during that storm. Met at the airport around dusk by my sister the professional FedEx driver. For... reasons, we immediately set off down the Alaska Highway in her 4WD Jimmy SUV. By the time we turned left onto the Taylor Highway it was already clear that going to Eagle in the dark in a foot of fresh snow was going to be...SUPER memorable.
She broke the back end loose and gunned it through every turn. I kept my eyes closed. We made it.

Brother in law travelled to a distant coast, flew back a week ago after a month doing fuck knows what. Arrived home and was sick as a dog two days later. Took an at-home Covid test right away, was negative, so it's "not Covid" and he hasn't taken another one. Sore throat, flu-like fever, feels like hammered shit, CONTINUES to feel like hammered shit after days and days.
He got vaccinated in 2021 (massive reluctance) but never boosted. If this is Covid, it's his 2nd or 3rd case. He never masks.

Obvious climate issues to one side, I wonder if there's any connection between the fact that the first organized fire management in Alaska began 85 years ago, the modern understanding that (in the words of this interesting history of Alaska wildfire management) "attempts to eliminate fire simply made it worse", and the doubling of burned acreage since fire management began.

1) I am demonstrably bad at social media;
2) I never tried very hard, because of my "the #pornocalypse comes for us all" fatalism about building adult community on corporate platforms.
I also used to think it would have been easier to find social media "engagement" if I was a creator rather than mostly a curator of other people's stuff. But I think what we all saw on Tumblr may have blown up that theory. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If Etsy acquires, gets acquired by, or merges with eBay or Amazon or Alibaba or Temu in the next six months, I called it yesterday, based on my theory that when a platform rolls out new pornocalypse policies, it usually indicates a financial inflection point like a merger or acquisition.

Real talk now.
At this point it's fair to call ErosBlog my life's work. 22.5 years of posting, on average every 1.2 days.
It's a rare day that all my pages together get 8,000 views. And some of those "views" could be bots. Less than one person a day leaves a comment.
It's not NOTHING. But I struggle with it. Does my work, my passion, just not have a bigger audience? Or is the old web just that dead?
I could do other stuff. But I'd have to stop doing this thing that I love.

I would be thrilled to receive follow recommendations for porn-posting accounts on Mastodon that routinely (I do not look for or expect perfection) show provenance for the photos (any kind of metadata telling us who's in the photo, who took or published it, or where/when it was first published) and at least a good-faith stab at some alt text. I don't mind a bot account (if it does this stuff, which I haven't ever seen one do) but hand-rolled is nicest.
Boosts for this toot would be delightful.

When I was a child we were promised flying cars and rocket jetpacks in the futuristic 21st century. Now that we're deeply stuck into that scifi future it turns out that all kinds of technological miracles are possible! But we can't have them, because to own them (or, too often, subscribe to them) involves bizarre surveillance demands wrapped in thousands of words of densely-hostile legalese, or outright submission to indignities against basic autonomy and privacy. I am left growling. A lot.

I very badly want to have one of those continuous blood glucose monitors (and I could easily get a prescription, or wait for the OTC one out this summer) but they all demand a smartphone app to monitor them and I equally badly do not want my blood sugar information sold off into the predatory personal health data industry. There is literally no company in the tech industry I can trust with this info. So I can't have one, probably ever. Just like I can't get a DNA test/analysis, ever. #trust
