Even if Harris wins in a landslide, it’s not going to do much to reduce the rising tide of Dunning-Kruger specimens now polluting the American gene pool. @npub1e02…7m30 excellent points Dave. There used to be so much hand ringing over the loss of “ombudsman,” but they were rarely very good, and we’re off very bad. One alternative might be crowdsourcing such work across all major newspapers. Have some ideas on what that might look like, but several could work.

Commet looks nice, but no spaces yet. And I can’t log in to an existing home server so I can’t really try it. Kazv is too new for my purposes. Commet probably is too. It’s so easy to start these projects and a whole other thing to get anybody to adopt them

All this social media ebb and flow is so confounding. While I like Bluesky and Threads, they are both still really poor at engagement for most people. I speak with some authority, because for months I have been cross posting to all 4 big platforms and see the differences close up. It’s quite dramatic. None of them come close to the fediverse experience.

Twitter wasn’t all that, even before Musk gutted it. And Threads is not a big step up from that. Social media needs reinventing. This model has been with us for 17 years. We need a laboratory for new ideas and user experiences.
That’s only going to happen in the fediverse. Where once, no one had an internet address, the same will be true of fedi IDs. Sooner than later, I hope.

For discussion purposes, I did a rough estimate of what a nonprofit network the size of Threads would cost, including start-up, personnel, tech, R&D, etc.. Believe it or not, it came to only $175 million, annually. Even if it was twice that much, a Makenzie Scott or Lauren Jobs could support such a project for 10 years and barely notice it on their balance sheets. And that’s with no revenue, before many costs would be offset by premium membership fees and nonprofit advertising.
