For discussion purposes, I did a rough estimate of what a nonprofit network the size of Threads would cost, including start-up, personnel, tech, R&D, etc.. Believe it or not, it came to only $175 million, annually. Even if it was twice that much, a Makenzie Scott or Lauren Jobs could support such a project for 10 years and barely notice it on their balance sheets. And that’s with no revenue, before many costs would be offset by premium membership fees and nonprofit advertising.
