Monday, 31st March 2025 - Near Campton
It was an unusual day for The Viridians. Our normal inclement weather gave way to warm spring sun. After a coffee we piled our easels, chairs, canvases, paints and brushes into a wheelbarrow down the lane and carted our stuff over a gate. We took a while to settle and find our spot for a composition. After nearly five hours we sat exhausted with mugs of tea in Wendy's living room and contemplated our day.
A continuation with removing our crop of weeds in the garden finished my afternoon.
The masala omelettes I cooked for dinner reminded me of our holiday with friends in India 7 years ago. I would love to go back and explore more.

Saturday, 5th January 2025 - Herbie's Pink Poinsettia
It has been sad taking down the Christmas decorations and stuffing them back into the boxes. The house looks kind of 'naked' without them.
We are going to a birthday party this evening. I love a party. `It will be a fun one as we have been told to take torches, wellies and wrap up warm. The original party was going to be in a marquee but that flooded overnight. Now it's in a barn. At least it's not snowing.

It took me a while to settle into what to paint today. The pink poinsettia that Herbie gave me was the perfect subject. I don't have much use for my watercolour Opera Pink that sits patiently on my palette. It was in got lots of use today.

Saturday, 16th November 2024 - Gin for Recovery
I thought it was Sunday today. My son corrected me when I asked if he was having a good Sunday!!! I have an extra day which is excellent.
Adriene took me through an hour long yoga session. Just over halfway through the battery died on my computer. I was very tempted to give up and go and have a coffee. I was so proud of myself. I folded some washing and put our knickers in the drawers. Long enough for Adriene to recharge. I went back into being a warrior and very pleased when we ended with a corpse pose.
I have been printing Christmas cards to send out to friends and family. Little Holt provided me with the space but it was damn chilly. With a bobble hat, thermal socks and a coat I was perfectly warm printing over 130 linoprints.
Today's postcard is for a very good friend who is going through a difficult time. She loves a Bombay Sapphire and tonic. Just what is needed when times are tough. It also ties in with Kalie Graves art challenge of shiny.

Thursday, 14th November 2024 - Mylor Churchtown, Falmouth
Harriet was with us for coffee. I set her to work sticking prices on my greetings cards and winding wool. Last autumn I made myself a lovely chunky knit cardigan. It was enormous. The wool is lovely. I am unknitting it. I plan to get at least two jumpers and possibly a hat?!? I enjoy knitting and look forward to my project. I took Harriet into the dentist for a tooth removal. I was concerned she would be shocked as it was a big back one. The tooth was in much better condition than anticipated. I took her back to our house and set her to work again. I really miss her company from when she lived next door and we chatted over our morning coffee.
This evening I was with WOKAS at a guided pastel landscape demonstration by Judy Tippler. Not my media so I was feeling apprehensive. I went as I had the tea and coffee bag. It turned out to be one of those unexpected enjoyable evenings. We have a very friendly interesting group of artists that have built up over the past few years. Great fun.
Today's Connected Postcard is of Falmouth where we went in August. I liked the fields and the lonely sailing boat. A hesitant pastel. It is going under the vague remit of 'green' for Kalie Graves art challenge.

Saturday, 2nd November 2024 - Happy Memories
I woke up this morning still feeling full of the delicious dinner Pippa had cooked us last night. I was worried I wouldn't be feeling hungry by lunchtime. Steve and Zoe were dropping in and we had a table booked at the Bell and Jorrocks for lunch. My worries were totally unfounded. The Ploughman's was too good not to eat. Shame I wasn't doing any ploughing this afternoon to burn off the calories.
Tim and I bravely left the warmth of the woodburner and walked to the end of the drive to watch the Benenden fireworks. Then we came back and had soup and toast. The soup was served in the bowls and on oval plates that belonged to Tim's Mum. We had many bowls of Brenda's homemade soup at Wendletrap. Happy memories.

Thursday, 26th September 2024 - Jim and Tonic at The Print House
I am typing this just after midday. It's going to be a late one tonight. I don't want to blog at midnight.
My guests had their breakfast before going off to feed the gorillas at Port Lympne. I am intrigued. I will be quizzing them about it over breakfast tomorrow.
Mark the Miele technician arrived. I took him upstairs to my bedroom where my roller iron resides. It was working perfectly when he tried it. Damn. It was hiding it's intermittent fault out of shame. He has replaced various parts. I have given it a test drive and so far all good.
Knowing we are going to Jim and Tonic at The Print House this evening today's postcard is of the restaurant - shame there were no people in the image I found. I have used a new ink pen that has a bent nib. I saw it on Instagram being used for pen and ink drawing. It is an odd one.
I need to change into something suitable for watching Abba. Talk later.

Tuesday, 24th September 2024 - Tiny Fungi on a Twig
It's been a quiet day in Benenden. I caught up with lots of 'stuff'.
Harriet was in Cranbrook having her teeth shined. She dropped by afterwards. Fable was beside himself with delight to see her with lots of jumping about and happy tail wagging. I was delighted to see her too but kept my emotions more muted. We had coffee at Little Holt with Tom. I left the siblings to catch up. Back home I did a couple of hours of ironing shirts and blouses that I had been putting off. It is a tedious task. It didn't help that I am not thrilled with the book I am listening to. Any suggestions for a good murder/mystery/thriller please.
Today's postcard is of a tiny twig with tiny fungi Harriet found in our garden. She foraged some big white ones from our woodland edge and took them to Michael for identification. His advice was not to eat them as they can put you in a coma - good advice.
I cooked mussels for dinner. No chips. I cooked some little potatoes and we had them squished under the mussels to soak up the juice.

Sunday, 22nd September 2024 - Cousins and their Dogs
Lightening and thunder woke me up in the night. I went down to the kitchen to check Fable was ok. He was curled up sleeping on his bed. Not a dog bothered by storms. This morning he checked both doors at Little Holt to see if Tom was home. He refused his breakfast, wasn’t tempted by his stinky tripe treats and sat and watched me throw his frisbee!!! He was delighted to have Tom home and so was I. I don’t like to see him sad.
The community apple orchard in Iden Green was holding an open day. Tim, Tom, Fable and I dropped by and met Lindsey, Alice and Roni. The cider was very drinkable. I had a pint and fell asleep when I got home.
I am typing being bombarded by moths. It is tipping it down with rain outside but warm so we have the top of the stable door open hence the moth intrusion.

Saturday, 21st September 2024 - Great Achievement
Tim and I went to the Ploughing Match with Fable. I got a coffee with Fable in tow only to loose the Morris. We went on a search to find them. Fable decided that he was going no further and stopped. He's a big strong dog and no pulling or coxing would get him to move until he was ready. So I stood like a lemon in the heat, it was a sunny morning, until he deemed it ok to us carry on. Tom, Jon and Cass were cycling 55 miles from London to Brighton raising money for charities while I was watching the Weald of Kent Morris eating ice-cream. Well done, a wonderful achievement.
We dropped by the Bell and Jorrocks on our way home from the ploughing at Honey Farm and had an impromptu lunch with Nick and Suzy. I had the most delicious ham and mustard sandwich. What a treat. Great pub.

Friday, 20th September 2024 - Oak and Sheep beyond The Halfway House
The torrential rain, lightning and thunder was not what my weather app forecast this morning. It passed and I met my good friend Sarah for coffee. Wendy's in Cranbrook is the best for sharing a bacon roll with a side of chilli jam. We haven't seen each other for many many weeks. She still looks the same. We had another coffee as we had lots to catch up on. We parted with the promise of getting together for dinner with Nigel and Tim.
I came home and spent a happy hour or so in my studio doing a linocut. It is of an aster which is the birth flower of September. Four misprints and I was happy with the birthday card I made for Lesley.
The Halfway House garden was warm enough to sit in this afternoon drinking gin and tonic and beer with Nick, Alli, Si, Lesley and Fable who laid under the table. We have a dinner date set at Nick and Alli's with crayfish from their lake on the menu.

Friday, 20th September 2024 - Tea at Hole Park
I have scrambled guests eggs for the last time for a few days. I look forward to pottering around in my slippers and dressing gown drinking copious cups of tea in the mornings.
After a couple of mugs of stimulating coffee I stripped beds and scrubbed showers. Feeling virtuous I had a break to read my new art book. I am full of inspiration to make something big and abstract.
This afternoon we drove to Dingleden to walk with Tony and Wendy. It was sunny and surprisingly too warm to be wearing jeans. The others were sensibly in shorts. We walked along brambly footpaths, good thing I was wearing jeans, to Hole Park where we stopped for tea before heading through Christmas tree fields back to Dingleden.
While eating homemade bean and feta burgers Tim and I watched About Time with Tom and Fable. Great film with Bill Nighy if you need feel good watch.

Tuesday, 17th September 2024 - Houses on Woodchurch Green
I have found my drypoint plates that I have been searching for. This afternoon I got some framed ready to take into Bayliss & Co in Tenterden. It is run by Beth who has curated the most wonderful selection of work from local artists and I am very privileged to be one of them.
Late morning/early afternoon I sat with a group of artists from WOKAS on the village green in Woodchurch. The wind blew canvases off their easels but we braved it out for our art. I drew today's postcard of the houses around the green then turned 180 degrees and set out painting a watercolour of the church. I miss calculated. My painting is missing the church. I had a lovely few hours.
It has been months since our book group with Alli and Lesley have met. This evening we got together at The Halfway House to discuss Weyward by Emilia Hart which was brief as it was ages since we read it. I ate much needed liver and bacon. Alli has given us The Appeal by Janice Hallett to read in the form of a proper book with pages. The next book group will be closer in time so hopefully are memories of the book will provide a bit more discussion. We did find lots of other very important things to chat about

Sunday, 15th September 2024 - A Sunday Stroll
I woke up to the smell of croissant. After breakfast we wellied up and went out into another sunny day for a walk around Benenden with Jo and Elaine, Tom and Fable joined us.
It could have been the last lunch we have in the garden. Tim had made soup which was accompanied by a variety of cheese, rolls and blueberry chilli jam. Oh and pickled onions that I had a craving for.
Jo and Elaine have returned to London. It has been a lovely weekend. Having friends to stay is an excellent reason for exploring, entertaining and eating.
I have been catapulted back into hosting bed and breakfast guests.

Saturday, 14th September 2024 - Garden at Lamb House
After drinking two mugs of tea and a coffee I was ready for the day. We took Jo and Elaine to Rye Harbour and walked thousands of steps around the nature reserve in the gently autumn sun. The cormorants were most entertaining. The Boson's Bite was the perfect place to stop for sandwiches. The seals weren't in the harbour today. Back in Rye town we visited Lamb House making the most of our National Trust cards. What a charming place. Elaine's exuberance has inspired me to read books by Henry James and E F Benson who both resided there. A hot chocolate at Knoops has been put on the to-do list for a future date as we ran out of time.
We got home to find apple juice from Malcolm and Margaret's apple trees which was perfect with ice, sparkling water and a slice of cherry and almond cake Tim had made.
This evening we went to The Woodcock with Lindsey for dinner. I had some very tasty lamb. It was buzzing with people. Back home the heating was needed for a boost of warmth while we sat drinking tea, whisky and triple sec. I am ready for my bed.

Friday, 13th September 2024 - Sissinghurst
This morning I spent preparing tomato tarte tatin, fish chowder and bramley apple crumble for a dinner of 8 or 9. This afternoon we picked up Jo and Elaine from Staplehurst station and made the most of their National Trust membership by taking them to Sissinghurst Castle Gardens. After a wander around the garden we had a drink in The Three Chimneys which is the best pub for a dimming afternoon. We had very lovely evening with very lovely friends I am ready for bed.

Thursday, 12th September 2024 - Asters for Kindness and Love
I love having bnb guests and I love not having bnb guests. We have a break of a few days which is delightful. Friends are coming to stay. I can wander unhindered in my PJs in the morning which would be totally inappropriate for paying guests.
Tim and I went out with a shopping list. Three hours later and we returned with extra things in our basket and some missing.
Mike and Pippa met us at The Ewe and Lamb in Rolvenden. We celebrated Pippa and Herbie being signed off from their consultants. Amazing. I am so proud of you both.
There is a film playing in the background as I type. Tom is working on a bit of coding. Tim's eyes are heavy. I have no idea what is going on!!! I don't think it is a very riveting watch.
I like a list. I have one for our evening meal tomorrow with good friends. I have one for food preparation. I know I will be awake in the night wondering what I have missed.

Wednesday, 11th September 2024 - Evening Walk
Tim did some major pruning of many shrubs this morning. Lindsey popped round for a cup of tea. We sat on the bench watching Fable and Fritha playing. I handed her some leather gloves to fend off the shrubs spikes so she could help me tidy and clear Tim's cuttings. Thank you for helping out. It is a job that I rather detest.
Tim cooked me one of my favourite meals tonight. Spinach and eggs baked in a white sauce. Just perfect for a Wednesday evening.
I am typing my blog drinking a G&T that I made earlier. Tom suggested I put in the fridge and could have it after we had been for an evening walk. I was hesitant about going as it was getting dark and my home seemed so cosy. I did go and had a thoroughly lovely time, chatted with a neighbour and listened to owls twit twooing. My G&T tastes the better for it. Thank you Tom.

Tuesday, 10th September 2024 - Ready for the Chop
I tried ironing my bnb bedding with my push along iron. Tim said I should wait until my roller iron is mended next Tuesday. I rejected his idea. After 15 minutes of still wrinkled duvet covers I conceded defeat. I think I will hang fire until my roller iron is fixed!!!
Harriet gave me some yellow courgettes. I chopped them up with tomatoes, red onion, red peppers, olives and anchovies and baked them. They were very delicious with salmon and jacket potatoes. Tom joined us. I love cooking for Tim and Tom after they have had a day of work.

Monday, 9th September 2024 - Satsumas in a Blue Bowl
Guests have gone. Our 88year old guest was full of life. Her advice was to keep busy and positive for a happy life. She was going home for a game of Whist and fish and chips. A fantastic philosophy.
I have someone coming to fix my Miele roller iron in a couple of weeks time. I bought it 21 years. Will they fix it??? If not I might give up bed and breakfast. After a session of ironing today with board and iron I am not keen to keep that up.
I have been looking where to get my daffodil and tulip bulbs from for potting up this autumn. B&Q seem to be the best place. Anyone know anywhere better let me know.
We are watching a psychological film drama, called The Lost Daughter, with Olivia Coleman who seems to be able to morph into any character. It's weird and disturbing, I am not sure the best thing to be watching on a Monday evening. I cooked Carrot and Feta burgers for dinner. They sound odd but they were very delicious with taziki, burger buns I made in the bread maker, and salad and homemade chips. Tom and Fable left us after dinner as he had work to do and wasn't taken with our film choice.
My tangerines in a blue bowl were the inspiration for today's postcard. I liked the colour combination.

Sunday, 8th September 2024 - Missing their Brother
Damn and damn again. My loved and cherished Miele roller iron rolls but does not heat up any longer. It needs to have an urgent repair to its heating elements. It's going to take me ages ironing bedding with my push along iron. Damn again. A walk with Tim, Tom, Fable and his whistling frisbee made me feel a whole lot better.
Today's postcard is for Matt. He was unable to come to the wedding yesterday. We missed you on the naughty table - and yes, we were put in the corner! Your sisters looked beautiful.

Saturday, 7th September 2024 - The hues of Dahlias
My guests had scrambled and poached eggs and out the door ready for their day of touristing the sights.
Tim and I have spent a wonderful afternoon and evening celebrating Alex and Esther's wedding in Rotherfield. Tim knew the area but it was an enigma to me. I love exploring new places and it is less than an hour from our doorstep. It was a beautiful church wedding with a stunning bride and groom. The reception has caused many a headache for family and friends due to the venue being in a field that got sodden by the past few days torrential rain. Six tonnes of wood chippings and a couple of extra tents and we were none the wiser it all looked perfect to us. Congratulations to Alex and Esther. It was lovely being with good friends and catching up with those infrequent ones. We have plans for more adventures together.
Today's postcard is a reflection of the dahlias that Esther and Alex had grown for the wedding. They were stunning and not a slug or snail in sight.

Friday, 6th September 2024 - The Ivy Barn
I am typing after a varied day. I have a little glass of red wine that is perfect.
We had torrential rain, lightening and thunder as I was showering and getting dressed this morning. I was grateful that it abated on my drive to Wickhambreaux. Harriet drove Herbie and I to Dover Hospital. He was so so so very brave. Harriet was so so so very brave. I was so so so very proud. He has been signed off after his accident last December. Just fantastic and fabulous. Herbie went back into school for fish and chips - it's Friday. Harriet and I had a coffee in The Ivy Barn. It was buzzing. They do the best cheese scones with loads of butter.
Tim saw in our new bnb guests with tea and chocolate brownies. Lindsey dropped by with Fritha and had an non alcohol g&t. I had one with alcoholic gin It is always lovely to see her and we can burble about our wonderful grandchildren. We are blessed.
The day ended with Tom cooking us an amazing and delicious guinea fowl/pasta/red wine dish. We had some glasses of wine before he headed back to Little Holt to work. Thank you Tom. So wonderful to be cooked for.

I had a changeover to do this morning. Damn I missed out on two outings. One was painting outside but that was rained off. Another was coffee with Pippa, Linda and June. I didn't have the morning free to join them. I expect they missed me.
Fable and his whistling frisbee, Tim. Tom and I went for a walk this afternoon. The torrential rain had reduced to a drizzle. The view through a tunnel of trees is the subject of today's postcard.
This evening we had pizza and drinks, I like the Kriek cherry beer, with Steve and Angie at a quiet McCanns. I found out lots of news about Benenden movements. I am off to bed to read my book.

Wednesday, 4th September 2024 - Rose from Tom
I weeded around the pond until the rain and a need for dinner set in. I am loving having Tom and Fable here. It would be perfect if we could have Harriet and her family living here too. I am sure we could fit another couple of houses into our garden. I am so proud of our grandchildren who have started the new school year bravely with a few tears from the little one and nerves from the girls. Squeezes my heart.
We are watching Sherwood. We have seen it before. It is even better the second time around. Very gritty. just found out there is another series. Excellent.
Today's postcard is a painting of a rose that Tom gave me. It is a tiny pot rose that I will transfer into the garden.... but..... as I saw two deer jumping around our flower beds today and knowing their penchant for roses it may be short lived.

Monday, 2nd September 2024 - Silver Birch for Love
Over tea, coffee, croissant and porridge we chatted about family and holidays with Dave and Josie who stayed last night. Tom and Fable joined us. I am looking forward to him staying with us.
I got the house and bnb room ready for guests who I wasn't sure would be turning up. Our last communication was in February. I made up a tea tray in preparation of their arrival and left it with Tim while I went to a WOKAS committee meeting in Tenterden. I had a great couple of hours discussing exhibition venues, get togethers and our open day. Our next meeting is a lunch in The Woolpack so we can check out their barn as an exhibition space.
Today's postcard is of the silver birch trees in Clive's garden. They are a symbol of love. The person I am sending it to has had some tragic times. I admire her positive attitude and energy.

I have shopping in the cupboards, fridge and freezer ready for a day of cooking tomorrow for a family lunch we are hosting on Sunday. I love a family get together.
I dropped into Silcocks for a coffee with Pippa who was holding a sale of her beautiful french treasures. I was very tempted by the blue and white chocolate pots that have eccentric handles.
Tim spent the day pruning and gardening. I spent the afternoon ironing and cleaning.We had well deserved beer - I like the cherry one - with Mike and Pippa at McCanns that seems to be settling into it setting.

Wednesday, 28th August 2024 - Ancient Shrub Rose
I hung a washing line full of blankets that flapped and dried in the sun. I felt very satisfied.
We had a power cut this afternoon. We were rung to check we were ok as they had notice that there was a pensioner in the house!!!
Lindsey came and helped me extract weeds from flower beds and relocate many many large slugs into the woods. Thank you for your help and company.
When we moved into our home 24 years ago there was an apricot shrub rose. Today it is still flowering and smells like sherbert. A good subject for a postcard.

We have had another night of the grandchildren without parents staying. They slept like angels all night. I was expecting a night time disturbance but none. Well done little ones. They are very individual and make an excellent mix. I have laughed, cried, shouted and had the best of times with them. They are now returned safely and unbroken to their parents.

Sunday, 25th August 2024 - After the Park
We had croissant or toast or rice for breakfast with Hetty, Raffy and Herbie. They all read books before heading into the day. I have played Brio and Playmobil with Herbie. I found a bag of stick on facial hair. Raffy sported a moustache for most of the day. The weather was warm enough to have a pasta lunch outside. Some magic pens occupied them all at various times of the day including myself. The garden provided entertainment from digging holes to reconfiguring our hose system. Tim took the children blackberry picking. I joined them with water and snacks at the park. The girls dressed up in a some of my clothes causing much giggling. Herbie found more toys to play with in the bath before reading me a bedtime story, then I got to read one to him. They certainly kept their grandparents entertained today.
Today's postcard is a quick sketch of our grandchildren and Tim watching a film after a busy day while I cooked dinner. They are all now in bed, including Tim.

We have family staying and visiting over the next week or so. Tim and I donned our leather gloves and armed with secateurs battled a years worth of bramble growth to retrieve the garden table and chairs.
Today's postcard is painting of our last day in France. We were walking around the village of Castelmoron. A delightful town with cafe, boulangerie, pretty stone shuttered houses and river. I took many photos so that when I have finished with this year's project I can make BIG paintings.

I was back in socks and jeans today. No hot Nouvelle-Aquitaine weather here in Benenden.
My sister welcomed me home with tea at her house. It was lovely to see her and Fritha. We caught up on stories in the kitchen while the rain watered the garden.
This evening it was our annual Weald of Kent Art Society Summer party. Clive held it in his studio which is like an solo art exhibition. So many beautiful paintings and sculptures. Damn the drizzle keeping us inside. We had a fun evening none the less.

Monday, 19th August 2024 -Fig Tree and Caravan
The eight o clock bells roused me from my sleep. After a mug of tea and shower it was bed stripping and bag packing. Mike came and collected us and our bags for our next stay at their house. I love it here. There is so much space I can live and breath the trees. We sat out I. The warming sun with coffee and croissant. Caroline,Craig, Dee, Roger and Bill dropped by and had coffee on their way back home. June and Barry arrived with pastries as they were passing on their way back to Kent.
This afternoon we walked to the farm shop and ate our peaches and greengages on our walk back.
I bravely took a swim with Mike and Pippa in their pool.
This evening we had aperitifs with Pippa’s sisters and John watching the swans on the river.
Our day had not ended. We were taken to a night market. Tim and I had salt chicken d with rice and pickled vegetables followed by crepe while listening to live music.
The people next to me were leaving and gave us their raffle tickets. Politely I asked where they were from. Michael lived a couple of doors down from where I grew up in Keston!!! His sister Hilary Carver went to primary school with Tim and my sister. How freaky is that!
I am now heading to bed in the most stunning bedroom with huge windows opening onto wonderful star lit skies. Goodnight lovely people.

Sunday, 18th August 2024 -Behind La Maison Rose
We said goodbye to Steve and Zoe. It has been wonderful to catch up with their news. I would recommend them as house buddies anytime.
The weather was looking cooler. Tim and I decided on a walk to Castle Moron. About an hours walk but passing intriguing fields of corn, a nuttery of hazelnuts, plum trees and fields of sunflowers it took us a bit longer. We stopped for a romantic drink at Cafe do Commerce. We were joined by Ray and Linda and became a foursome. They drove off. We walked back to Fongrave. It was getting a bit hot. Back at our apartment I did a fine impression of a goldfish swimming in a bowl around and around in the pool.
Mike, Pippa, Ray, Linda, June and Barry arrived for an aperitif before we were escorted to my first Night Market in Montclar. I think that is where we were? Delightful food and a wonderful view with the most amazing orange moon.
Thank you Ray and Linda for driving us home. I think we are all shattered after a fabulous few days and all down to Mike and Pippa having the energy and insight to have a house here in Fongrave. Thank you and good night.

Saturday, 17th August 2024 - Saturday Market
Steve and Zoe drove us to Casseneuil. Beautiful town but it was deserted. AND no charging points for their car. We had a wander and a very salubrious coffee at canoe hire place. Looking for something a bit more vibrant Steve drove us to Villeneuve sur lot which was much more buzzy. We strolled through the market and found a lunch spot with a fixed price three course menu with wine and coffee. The market was dismantled by the time we had eaten our peaches and cream. Charging points came available so Steve charged off to plug in. We tourist around churches and bridges and returned to a charged car as the rain bucked down. A supermarket gave us refuge and provided us with party wine and sea urchin nibbles.
I am drinking a last glass of wine with Steve and Zoe at 1.30am ish, Tim has gone to bed, before they leave us tomorrow. Now Steve has gone to bed. We have spent a fabulous evening at Mike and Pippa’s French house warming party with their friends, neighbours and family. Now Zoe has gone to bed!!! I am all alone.

Friday, 16th August 2024 -The Moon and Pippa
My alarm was evil waking me at 2.30am. I shouldn’t complain as we are going on holiday …. But I will a little bit as I love my sleep. A drive to Gatwick in the dark arriving in Bordeaux in daylight. Ray and Linda were on the same flight and we grabbed a lift. A stop off for lunch in Duras was delightful. We had the set menu which was a bargain. We all gad crudités, then I had an escalope of turkey followed by an amazing coconut tart. Back on the road Ray very kindly dropped us at our Airbnb where Steve and Zoe had settled in and dipped in the pool.
I unpacked my pants, changed into cooler attire. We wandered along The Lot river watching the water activities. We had a little rose and olives. Thank you Steve and Zoe for bringing supplies, before walking to Mike and Pippa’s. Wow what a fabulous house they have. It was filled with friends and family. We sat outside and ate under the stars. I am shattered and going to bed. Goodnight.

Thursday., 15th August 2024 - Temptation
I did lots and lots of ironing. We now have copious amounts of shirts and blouses to wear - no bottoms needed ironing?!?
We went for a quick chatty walk with Tony and Wendy this afternoon. The bushes are abundant with blackberries. This prolonged our stroll as we kept stopping to pick and eat them. I wonder if you can make blackberry gin?
This evening WOKAS had.a portrait demonstration. It was a risk having an event in August and we were concerned the turnout would be low. Soooo embarrassing when you have a paid demonstrator. No worries this evening. It was one of the highest numbers of members attending we have had. Very pleasing and a great portrait painted in oils in about an hour and a half. Very clever. Very inspiring. Another highlight was a bourbon biscuit I had with my coffee. Yet another highlight was meeting Ted a 12 week old puppy. I am not that bothered by dogs unless it is Fable but Ted was adorable until he started chewing the buttons on my blouse. Welcome to WOKAS Ted.

Wednesday, 14th August 2024 - Having a Rest
Thank goodness for the cooler weather. I do not function very well in the heat mentally and physically it makes be a bit cranky. So today I was full of joy. The washing got put on the line. I did some more weeding. I hoovered a tangle of cobwebs that had been building in our bedroom.
The best part of the day was with Harriet and the grandchildren. Herbie loves water especially if there is a hose involved. We all got a bit wet, even the cat, from his exploits. Tim put the paddling pool out on the grass. Our robot mower took a couple of bites. It no longer holds water. It is going to have a couple of remedial patches. Thank goodness I did a double cheese scone bake. They all have hearty appetites. They make me grounded. We are running low on books for them to read. Anyone got any that are suitable for an avid six year old reader, he was reading my old Dr Suess today and adventure stories for 11 and 13 year olds let me know?

Today I have been keeping my washing machine occupied, it has had a rest while I was on holiday. The sun had dried all my knickers on the washing line. It has been a been hot to do much else but potter.
When I visited my friend Leelee a month or so ago she had a tub full of delightful plant that I coveted. I took some cuttings. Within a couple of weeks they had rooted - very pleasing. I planted them out and to keep them strong removed any flowers. My Purple Fantasy is looked fantastic. Today I took a couple more cuttings. Would you like one?

Saturday, 10th August 2024 - Nasturtium for Joy and Pleasure
We are home from a wonderful Falmouth after a week of holiday friends, adventures, food and wine. The train journey home was much easier than going with no cancellations. Just over 7 hours door to door. So good to be back home and find the chickens still laying eggs, Morris the cat at 21 years still alive and tomatoes ripening in the greenhouse.
This morning we jammed all our clothes back into their bag. Having purchased a few new things it was a very tight squeeze including a few bottles of Cornish gin. It was a mizzle of a morning that cleared as we walked through Falmouth town. We had our last coffee holiday coffee with Diane, John and Bobby in Windjammer watching boats and ferries coming and going.
Today's postcard is to celebrate the arrival of a new baby.

Friday, 9th August 2024 - Thousands of Pink Wigs
Over coffee and croissant we had an exciting morning watching the Olympic climbing. John and Diane have been introduced to a new sport. I am not a follower of sport in any which way but this was amazing and I felt an affinity with Harriet, Brett, Hetty and Raffy. I know they were watching too. It would have been wonderful to have been with them - next time.
Finally, we left and walked to get the 69 bus from Falmouth to Mylor Bridge. We got off a few stops too late and added to our daily step count. It's a very hilly trek to The Eastways cafe. The weather was kind today and we sat outside. The crab cakes and chilli jam reminded of my friend Sarah back in Kent. I haven't seen her for ages and hope she still remembers me. Back on our feet we walked the sea path scrambling across barnacle clad rocks to get us to Flushing to catch the Ferry back to Falmouth.
Tim had found a CAMRA guide. We visited the Seaview Inn - rather sticky and disappointing as it is run by Verdant where we had an amazing meal on Tuesday. We went down 111 steps of the Jacobs Ladder in search of more pubs on Tim's list.
Penny Come Quick was next - ok but we didn't linger long. Back out into the sunshine The Moth and the Moon was a gem with a roof top terrace, unfortunately more steps for my tired thighs to tackle.
We had a table booked at Mine, in The Old Brewery Yard. I thought we had eaten some glorious food but this was fabulous. Want to know what I had... started with sourdough bread with seasalt butter, we shared potato skins with truffle oil and parmesan, a starter of lamb ravioli, followed by pan fried goats cheese gnocchi, confit courgettes, basil pistou and nanny muffet cheese (not sure what the nanny cheese was but it was delicious), I finished with honey cake with meringue, cream and strawberries. A stunning meal with lovely friends.
While drinking our aperitifs thousands of women, possibly a few men, paraded past wearing pink wigs in raising money for care and treatment of breast cancer.
Back walking home we dropped into the Star and Garter where I had coffee, the others were still drinking alcohol.
Our last night in Falmouth we are drinking a last glass of rose. Thank you John and Diane for hosting us and showing us the delights of Falmouth. We will miss you.

Monday, 5th August 2024 - Trelissick Beach
After breakfast chez Moonraker and a bit of a lie-in - so nice not to wake up to an alarm - we took another boat to Trelissick. It was a half an hour-ish trip on the Fal and a very amusing commentary from our captain. He tempted us with sights of herons - saw them, seals - nope, egrets - nope, mermaids - nope but Poldark was filmed nearby, I did enjoy that series. On landing it was an uphill windy route to Trelissick beach where I poked around the rocks and got squirted by the winkles. Continuing our uphill walk we wandered around Trelissick House, I had a Cornish pasty before walking through the gardens with the most beautiful trees before zig zagging back to get our boat back to Falmouth. We did a bit of shopping and the heavy bags of provisions made us need to stop for a gin and tonic before continuing home.
I have a pepper/tomato and sea bass bake in the oven ready for Diane our next addition to our party. Oh and a glass of rose.

Saturday, 3rd August 2024 - View from Moonraker
I have had my last morning of bnb for a while.
Tony came and collected Tim and I. What a kind friend he is. He dropped us off at the station and left. We wandered onto the platform, Tim dragging a bulging bag (I couldn't decided what to pack so took loads of 'just-in-case'), to find our train to Charing Cross was cancelled. The next scheduled train meant we would miss our train to Falmouth. Tim had had this happen to him previously and knew what to do. We went from Ashford to St Pancras, to Paddington via the tube. I had no idea where I was or where I was going and trailed along with my bag in total confidence that Tim would get us where we needed to be. He did. We got out train and now we are in Falmouth staying in a fabulous apartment that looks over the Fal. A few beers and wine later and I am ready for my holiday.
We are alone tonight but will be joined by friends whose apartment it is tomorrow. They are going to show us the local delights. Fabulous.

Friday. 2nd August 2024 - Treasures at Bentley's
Oooh I had a sudden realisation that we are now two days into August!!! Is time running away with me? Is it getting older that days seem to fly by. I have so much I want to do....
It has been a busy and happy day. The boiled egg I served my bnb guest was perfect on the third day of experimenting. Success is beautiful. I wrote my 'To-Do' list. It was very long. By 12.30 I had two thirds crossed off. The greenhouse has been tidied. Pots have been refreshed and old saggy soggy petunias composted. The day was going well. I met Harriet and the grandchildren in Cranbrook. They had a dentist visits. Herbie has 21 teeth and Hetty left minus one. She nearly left her removed tooth in the basket at the supermarket checkout. The checkout girl kindly gave it back to us!! I love them soo very much. They came to see their grandad. He and Herbie did a fine job of cutting the grass on the sit on mower. Harriet made me tea. Why is tea so much better when it is made for you?
Our bnb guests opened a bottle of wine this evening. It would have been very rude to refuse a glass or two. They had bidded for a couple of items at the Cranbrook auction. I love an auction and felt a brief pang of jealousy - then I remembered we have a loft, garage and house full of 'stuff'. Best not add to it.

Thursday, 1st August 2024 - Bramley Apple Tree
The commission I did? Phew they liked it.
My guests challenged me at breakfast by ordering poached, scrambled and boiled eggs, ham and cheese, toast, croissant, pain au chocolate, fruit salad and yogurt, tea, coffee and a mug of hot milk. I felt a small sense of achievement following delivery.
We celebrated Tony's birthday a day late - they were busy elsewhere on his birthday day - with Wendy by having breakfast at The Woodcock Inn. I had the Full Monty. A rare treat. Many of those and I would have many muffin tops. I didn't have to eat again until this evening.
This afternoon I watched some bits of the Olympics while ironing bedding. Wow what a lot of muscle. Very entertaining. My roller iron is starting to misbehave. Hopefully a temporary gremlin or it could be an expensive expense.
Our Bramley Apple Tree looks like it is going to have a good crop this year. I love it's wonky ways. A good subject for today's postcard.
I am loving the sound of the thunder as I type. A power outage may be on its way. I had better type faster.

Monday, 29th July 2024 - Mussels for Dinner
While I was ironing sheets, pillow cases and table cloths I watched Tom Daley and Noah Williams diving in the Olympics. Wow they are impressive. It left a good feeling in me for the rest of the day.
It was too hot for me in the garden so I continued work on a commission that has challenged me. This afternoon I got the composition right. I am now very happy with the painting and hope the recipients will be. What I paint and what the customer has in mind can be very different. If they don't like it they don't have to have it or pay for it. I will post it if they say it's ok.
Mussels were on offer in Tescos. There was a recipe for roasted smashed potatoes in a magazine I had picked up. They made delicious partners. I am not sure why the potatoes were par boiled with vinegar in the water? Any ideas

Sunday, 28th July 2024 - Mini Watermelon
A hot hot day was forecast. So after serving guests fried eggs, croissant and pain au raisin (I kept a spare for Tim and I to share with our coffee) I took the Makita hedge trimmer to my box hedge. By the end of the afternoon I had trimmed about two thirds. I had great fun forging a chicken and cockerel. They are a little wonky and eccentrics.
The garden was a kaleidoscope of butterflies, stridulating grasshoppers, and a wake of buzzards. Guess who has been trawling the internet this evening!?!
Lindsey had perfect timing and dropped in just as I needed a tea break from hedge trimming. Today's postcard is of the delightful mini watermelon she gave me as a charming gift. Apparently very common as a gift in Japan. Yep, another internet discovery.

Friday. 26th July 2024 - The Pink House, Rye
This morning I was happily pottering around making bread dough and tidying up when Tim said "Are you ready?" I had forgotten he was going to Rye. I wasn't going to miss out on a trip to the Rye Art Gallery or coffee, toast with marmalade at The Apothecary. I was ready in minutes.
This afternoon Tim promised a dry walk through Hemsted Forest. Tony, Wendy and I disagreed as we jumped over puddles and paddled through mud.
Marion and Arian, guests who we have known for many years and are now lovely friends, joined us with Tony and Wendy for dinner. Tim made a chickpea and fish dish that I like very much. The turmeric bread I made brightened up the meal. As the evening chilled we came inside and sat around the kitchen table exposing Marion and Arian to Tim's pickled eggs. A lovely evening with lovely friends.
Today's postcard is of The Vicarage in Rye. So many beautiful buildings to draw but I chose this one as it is one of my favourites and there was a bench to park myself on while I drew.

Thursday, 25th July 2024 - Bonny Green Garters
I haven't ventured any further than our garden today. I did go out to collect the eggs and feed the chickens. They made a valiant attempt to fight the crows for the bread crusts. The crows are much more wily than the hens and come in from the chickens blind spot - behind. Oh and I did fill up the bird feeders. The rain has meant that I have got to the bottom of my ironing pile and Tim and I now have shirts to wear. Two of my friends are exploring hotter climes. One in France and the other in Italy. Me!!!! Jealous????? Errr YES.
Tonight's postcard is a retrospective painting of the final dance the Morris do at the end of their set. All and sundry can join in. One of our lovely Dutch guests bravely took to the floor. I no longer partake having joined in many times in past years. I have been watching Tim Morris dancing for over 43 years and still don't know the names of all the dances.

Wednesday, 24th July 2024 - Sheep Market in Ashford
Lindsey and I spent a couple of hours in Tenterden pursuing many shops. The coffee and cinnamon bun in Nutmeg were excellent. Our brother was due to visit this weekend. A bad back had made him cancel. This is sad as we haven't seen him for many months. We got some healing tea and a murder mystery book to send to him while he recuperates. Backache is horrid, physically and mentally draining. We hope he is well soon and able to reschedule his visit. Get well soon my big brother.
I have just returned from a very entertaining at The Bell and Jorrocks. I wasn't going to go. Tim gently persuaded me. I am so so pleased I went. I chatted with some lovely people. The Morris dancing was glorious... but.... the song and music following was fabulous. I laughed and cried. Emily singing to Alan was wonderful. They both know how to entertain an audience. Tonight's postcard is a gathering of many singers and musicians drawn as I watched. Great evening.

Tuesday, 23rd July 2024 - Whitstable Groynes
I am drinking a gin and tonic whilst reminiscing on a wonderful day in Whitstable. Harriet hired a beach hut. Tim, Natalie, Brett, Harriet, Raffy and Herbie - oh and me - celebrated Hetty becoming a teenager. We had bacon fried by Brett on the gas stove in the little hut and made into sandwiches with ketchup, beer, Monster Munch, fizzy sweets (Raffy sorry I stole your chocolate covered honeycomb, it was delicious though) and a pile of chocolate brownies topped with 13 candles. The weather was grim as we set out, drizzling and grey. As the tide went out, sand appeared along with the sun and ice-creams. I got rather soggy playing with Herbie in the sea. Harriet saved me from total immersion and with the girls played in the waves. I retired to the beach. It was the best time to see the family messing about in the waves. Happy birthday Hetty. Your grandparents are so very proud of the person you are. Thank you.
One question for you from Herbie.... Why is the sea salty? Five adults and two clever children did not know the answer. Do you know?

Sunday, 21st July 2024 - Love and Friendship
I have cooked my last eggs for guests this morning. I have a couple of days off. I am hoping to doing some oil painting. I have some ideas batting around my mind that I feel the need to get out.
Would we be having lunch inside or out? Nick, Alli, Si and Lesley arrived with wine, honey, Baklava, , cherries and flowers. So lovely. The rain stopped. The sun came out and much to my pleasure we ate outside. I had forgotten how wonderful a jug of Pimms can be. I did share it. I love cooking for friends as any mishaps are generously received. We had courgette and tomato soup accompanied by Tim's French sticks. Followed by potato and herb salad with pink trout. We had a salad Elizabeth had made us a few weeks ago which was delicious. Hold on. I am going to have to look up what it was called..... Fattoush! Really tasty. I made a cheesecake with blackcurrants given to us by Malcolm. It was cooked in a water bath to keep its wobble. We have a fridge full of leftovers being the benefit of making too much food.
Lindsey dropped by with Herbie's socks and sunglasses. I miss that little chap.
Alli came with sweetpeas and a lavender wreath she had made. I love it very much - thank you. They were the subjects for today's postcard. Sweetpeas for friendship and lavender for love.
Tim and I are ending the day watching a film set in Istanbul. We are reminiscing about our few days there. Such an interesting place.

Saturday, 20th July 2024 - Three Generations
Harriet and Herbie we dropped off at breakfast time while Brett, Hetty and Raffy went to a climbing competition in Tunbridge Wells. They all had great climbs. We had a gap in the afternoon while Brett was still climbing. Harriet, Hetty, Raffy, Herbie and I squeezed into our little red two door Peugeot and took a trip to Tescos for ice-creams then landed in Lindsey's garden where Will, Fizz and Ottie were spending the weekend. It was a perfect afternoon with a paddling pool and ice-creams, cherries and donuts chatting in the sun. Thank you for hosting us Lindsey. I hope we didn't leave too much chaos behind.

Thursday, 18th July 2024 - Nearly a Heatwave
Tim and I have been doing pottering jobs. I cleaned out the hens and was rewarded with eggs. Tim mended a leak under a sink and rewarded with no more drips. We went to Adam and Eve's to get apple juice, then to Sainsburys and found nothing we needed, onto the fishmongers and bought a fish for dinner, then to Waitrose and got trout for Sunday and finally Tescos for house plants.
It's been a warm one today and inspired my postcard. As I type I am waiting for the brief visit from Tom to collect his passport before he adventures off to Albania for a holiday.

Wednesday, 17th July 2024 - After the Dancing
It is late. I am tired. I am eating a ketchup sandwich at 11pm. Don't judge me? It is 'organic' tomato ketchup.
Adriene helped ease my stiff back. I love her very much.
It was one of those days that go by in a whirl of work, stuff and emotions. Thank you to my sister. I spent the afternoon with her. She made me tea, fed me biscuits, cherries and raspberries while we proudly chatted about the wonders of being grandparents and the delight our grandchildren bring us.
I made rice and tomato soup and felt a pang of loss. It was my mother-in-laws recipe and a favorite of hers.
I wasn't feeling much in the mood for going out this evening but I am so glad Tim whisked me off to The Halfway House. It was good to chat with friends, watch the dancing, listen to the music and song while drinking rose wine.
I did today's postcard while listening to music and singing. It doesn't quite catch the energy of the evening. They could be waiting for a bus! I loved drawing it evenso.

Tuesday, 16th July 2024 - Lemon Cake and Peaches
I had a wonderfully late start to my day. First I made bread, then did some yoga with Adriene that I haven't done for weeks and was horrified at how unbendy I was, following that I made a lemon drizzle cake for guests that we had a little slice of after dinner. I planted some hydrangeas in the gaps left by the roses I had dug out. I am very proud of my cuttings that have taken three years to be big enough to go out into the big wild world. It all sounds like the perfect day but in reality I was tetchy and grumpy with niggling back pain.

Monday, 15th July 2024 - Lilford Art Gallery
Harriet had a rare few hours free to squeeze in a visit to Canterbury before the school holidays begin. We rendezvoused in the park and ride after she had deposited the children at school. We took advantage of the sunny day and walked into town. The Lilford Gallery in Castle Street took our attention even before we had stopped for coffee. Sam was wonderfully knowledgeable and helpful about the art and artists and answered our many questions. We rewarded our artistic minds with coffee and a cheese scone. What a precious few hours I had with my daughter.
The weather warning on my App was accurate. It is chucking it down as I type. My pots of petunias will suffer but the hydrangeas will be joyful.

Sunday, 14th July 2024 - A Bunch of Buddleia
I had two bnb rooms to turnaround today. I worked my little socks off to get them done. My reward was ironing the sheets while watching Wimbledon. Tim brought me an Aperol Spritz and cooked me pizza for dinner which was a good way to end the day.
We have buddleia shrubs flowering all around the garden. It smells of honey and is lovely in a vase. A good subject for today's postcard.

Saturday, 13th July 2024 - To Be Always Cheerful
What a lovely way to start a Saturday with Herbie and Harriet visiting. It was before breakfast and a s I was scrambling, frying and poaching for guests I made a trio of eggs for Herbie's breakfast with buttered soldiers. Harriet and Herbie helped me with tomato watering and chicken feeding duties in Dingleden. Tony and Wendy have now returned and I am very pleased that the hens survived under our care. The park in Benenden was a good place to meet the rest of The Evans who had spent the morning climbing. Tim cooked pasta with cheese sauce supplemented with pizza to feed our growing granchildren. It was lovely to sit outside and let them play in the garden. They left. I always feel a tug in my heart when they go. Malcolm came and collected Tim and Nick leaving Suzy and I to drink tea surrounded by the debris of the day.
I think I will have an early night and a date with my book. I am reading Weyward by Emilia Hart - excellent book now I have sorted out the characters place in history.
Today's postcard is of coreopsis. I have a pot of it on the back door step. It bravely survived the winter and is now looking fabulous. It symbolises to be always cheerful. Perfect for the person I am sending it to.

Friday. 12th July 2024 - Skinny Sarah
I met Sarah for a coffee in Wendy's in Cranbrook. She is so thin and skinny I hardly saw her. Wendy's was closed so we perused the charity shops in hope it would be open in half an hour or so. I filled a bag with a delightful new top, books and jigsaws for the grandchildren. Still no chairs under the tables or lights on at Wendy's. We debated long and hard where to go and took a bunt upon Willow and Sage. We had much better than anticipated (we are very fussy) coffee and a shared bacon sandwich. Thank you Sarah for a very lovely morning even though I think you are a bit too thin.
I came home to find Tim working on the garden relieving me of weeding a flower bed. He had snuck in some bed and breakfast guests who are very delightful and Dutch. I have caught up with my ironing. I have read school reports from my two littlest grandchildren and so very incredibly proud how they have coped and thrived through a very unsettling and difficult year.

Thursday,11th July 2024 - The Mad Hatter
As soon as I had cleaned the bnb rooms I was out the door and on the road to Wickhambreaux. Harriet me welcomed me with coffee. I took cold chicken, eggs, pasta, smoked salmon and cream cheese to help feed the ever hungry growing grand children. Harriet, Brett and I went to Littlebourne Primary school for Raffy’s last play. She was a star being the Mad Hatter, a very opinionated caterpillar and taking the last minute role as The Key due to sickness. I felt very emotional thinking about how time flashes by. It was a privilege to be there.
I am painting tonight’s postcard in the company of other WOKAS artists, some doing oils, some watercolour and some painting on maps/magazines which was the brief for this evening. I decided to go off piste.

Monday, 6th May 2024 - Day Eight - Inky
I wondered if I may grow quills and turn into Mrs Tiggy Winkle I had so many piles of washing and ironing to do.
Amy's prompt for day eight is 'Inky'. I got out my homemade inks. Today's postcard is painted with ink made from daffodil flowers, oak galls, copper and avocado stones. Shame you can't smell them. A lovely mix of colours. Tim and I went for a damp misty walk to post yesterday's postcard. We came across a wonderful wood with old rambly trees which inspired my inky painting. My Connected Postcard Project is pushing my creativity. I have now sent 127 little paintings to friends and family. The responses I have had are so lovely. I have had hand written letters, emails and comments on my blog. Some of my postcards have been kept, some framed and some sent on. So encouraging to keep painting and sending.

Sunday, 5th May 2024 - Day Seven - Stone 'Gravel'
I breakfasted my guests, cleaned and made their beds. Give me praise for working on a Sunday!!!
Wendy gave me some Russian kale plants that she grew from seeds we gave her at Christmas. They were in the greenhouse and yearning to be planted out. After a barrow full of homemade compost was dumped on the veg patch - thank you tim - I planted them alongside pest controlling marigolds. They are looking rather droopy. I am sure once their roots are settled they will decide to grow vertically.
Ok so I am pushing the boundareis of today's prompt a bit. Amy gave us 'stone' for day seven. This afternoon we had tea and cake with my mate Leelee and her husband Richard. I adore their house and garden. Not in the least bit jealous - they have bee hives and wild bits of colourful beauty and views to views of 32 miles. Their elderly dog is named Gravel. Near enough to stone I thought as I watched him ramble through the bluebells and wild garlic. I think that's ok don't you?

Friday, 3rd May 2024 - Day Five - Bristles
I have scrambled and fried eggs for guests, made their beds and cleaned their bathrooms.
Another delivery of plants have arrived. I plugged my ears into an audio book and potted up fifteen aquilegia, five day lilies and three hydrangeas that were free as I spent so much!!!
I did a bit of therapeutic lino cutting which I love before meeting Tony and Wendy at The Eight Bells in Hawkhurst. We were delayed due to three-way works traffic lights, followed by normal queing at the lights at the crossroads and ending with traffic lights at road works. I enjoyed my Big Tom spicy tomato juice very much.
Day Five of the Inchie Challenge and Amy has given the prompt of Bristles. That got my little grey cells working. I ended up doing a Google search and found that crows have bristles near their beaks. One purpose is to prevent insect legs getting into their eyes. I love facts like that.

Wednesday, 1st May 2024 - Day Three - Love
It was a traditional 5.31 am start to May day on the streets of Goudhurst watching the Morris singing and dancing in the start of summer. I always get a bit emotional listening to the singing I think it is being with the grandchildren and thinking of their future.

Tuesday, 30th April 2024 - Day Two - Patience
As I drove into Cranbrook to meet Sarah for an americano and half a bacon roll I pondered on how to fulfil today's prompt from Amy. Patience!!! Tough one. Then it came to me. I planted a tree peony in the garden and had to wait 'patiently' for years before it flowered. Now I wait for over 11 months of the year for it to burst into bloom for probably a couple of weeks at the most. I never thought of myself as patient or not. Now I think I am.
To those who commented on the Morris fertility cake I will enlighten you....I have no idea apart that for the last 36 May Days the Weald of Kent Morris have danced a fruit cake has been speared on a sword and shared with the adoring audience. The getting up at 5.31am on May Day to dance and sing marks the beginning of summer and the fertility.

Monday, 29th April 2024 - Day One - Leaves
Amy Maricle is running a 12 day Inchie Challenge. I thoroughly enjoyed the last one I did so am doing it again. I get a daily word prompt by email. Today's is Leaves and inspired by the rhubarb in the garden. And it means I don't have to come with an idea for my postcard for 12 days. I have broken the rules already as mine is a 10 x 12!!!
I am not sure what happened to my morning. It sort of disappeared. The afternoon was full of sunshine and I was very happy pottering around weeding, planting and watching the chickens battle with a crow and a magpie over crusts of bread.
My kitchen smells of the fertility cake that Tim has baked for May Day. I won't be eating any of that thank you.

We have the most adorable three guests to stay. They are long term returners from Holland and have become fond friends.
I have been ....yep....... lino cutting this afternoon. It is much more time consuming than I had anticipated. I love it.
Today's postcard is inspired by Wistling. An excellent Norwegian thriller. My only complaint is that it has subtitles and get very confusing when I don't read them as I am trying to paint my postcard. I am snacking Liquorice Allsorts - Bassetts are the only ones for me - another birthday present from Harriet. My birthday just keeps giving.

Yesterday we had a wonderful day. The afternoon was spent in Wickhambreaux. Harriet and Brett have transformed an apartment they bought a few months ago. What an amazing team they make. Brett with his workmanship, Harriet with her artists eye and bargain hunting. They have worked their socks off scraping it back to the bare bones to start again. It looks stunning. So proud of them. Raffy and Herbie both got headteachers certificates this week. Hetty's beetle linocuts were beautiful - so proud of all my grandchildren too.
My late night was caused by having dinner at Ewan and Kath's. We haven't been to their home for ages or seen their daughters who have grown and changed. I managed to button my lip and not tell them. Always embarrassing to be told by your parents friends how much you've grown as a child. So good to relax with a delicious curry and charming friends. It's uplifting to be in the company of a good looking couple. Thank you for a great evening.
Today has been quiet.
This climber was part of my many and very thoughtful birthday presents from The Evans family. I will find a delightful spot in the garden for it to clamber up to its full potential of 10 metres!!!

Thursday, 25th April 2024 - View from Little Rock
It's Nick's birthday today. Happy Birthday. I love a birthday celebration. Tim and I battled through Folkestone's bracing wind and sea rain and met him with Alli, Si, Lesley, Lucy and Mick in The Ship Inn for a pre lunch drink. We missed having whelks and cockles at Chummys - not so keen myself. We had a table at Little Rock with a great view over the sea that was a threatening green colour with wild white horses. I want to go back and explore - when I have finished my lino cuts that are coming along slowly but surely. What a great place Folkestone is. I can see why it was voted the best place to live in the South East.

In between having a messy time cutting a lino print fish I had brunch bought for my by Gay as a lovely belated birthday present.... And her and Robert gave a beautiful pink rose. I have walked it around the garden to find a suitable spot. This afternoon Tim, Wendy and I started a short walk due to the incoming rain that never arrived so it ended in a very very long walk ending at The Bull.
Our new woodburner is glorious throwing out heat to warm our chilly bones in the evenings.

Saturday, 20th April 2024 - Trees and Bluebells
Hopefully Tim has done the last grass cut with the sit on mower before the robot is allowed out.
I have been gardening. Potting on my rampant seedlings, getting rid of exuberant weeds and planting out mysterious plants as the labels I wrote in the autumn are now blank.
Tim added a prawn curry and homemade roti breads to the two curries I made last night.
The bluebells are looking lovely in our hornbeam woods. I have been inspired by the Impressionist pointillism I saw at Musee D'Orsay for today's postcard.

Friday, 19th April 2024 - A Symbol of Long Life
My thoughtful sister came for coffee with a box of Macarons just in case we were missing Paris.
I seem to have expanded. My jeans are just a bit tight around my wobbly waist. At least I know the reason and thoroughly enjoyed my almond croissant, Aperol spritz, baguette, roast pork in a cream sauce, wine, apple tart with caramel butter and more.
I pruned my mint and put the cuttings in water. They have sprouted roots and a caterpillar. The caterpillar and it's mint has been put in a jar with compost. I am keeping it for Herbie to look after. He loves an insect. I have just had an internet explore to check they are insects as they have many legs but according to the Woodland Trust site they have six legs which class them as insects and up to five pairs of stumpy prolegs with useful hooks for hanging.
We have come home to a garden with an abundance of fruit tree blossom. So pretty.

Thursday, 18th April 2024 - Lunch at Mignon Cafe
We were still in Paris this morning. Alex and Julia met us for a walk around Sacre Coeur. There was a street that I had read about, Avenue Junot, that had beautiful houses and the sun was shining. I really hadn't thought of taking my sunglasses. We stopped for lunch in Mignon Cafe. Being vegetarian we filled ourselves with black radish, spelt and sourdough.
Now back at hom. I have had the most wonderful time celebrating my birthday. Thank you Tim for organising the whole trip from our 6th floor apartment in Montmartre, trains - many trains, restaurants, a gallery trip - I love a Monet painting of turkeys, the sunshine, and the surprise dinner with Steve and Zoe. What a wonderful couple of days. I love a city visit. Always pleased to come home. I miss my friends and family.

Wednesday, 17th April 2024 - Pavilion de Flore
I woke to my husband bringing me an almond croissant. Perfect with a mug of tea. I bring tea bags wherever I travel. Lindsey understands the importance of tea particularly in the morning. He was up and out while I slumbered and showered. We packed our backpacks and headed downtown. It was a beautiful morning for a Parisian walk. Just adore it here. We spent the afternoon in Musee d’Orsay amongst the Impressionists. So many paintings I had only seen in books and some I had never seen. There was a Monet of white turkeys I particularly liked. It chucked it down while we were immersed in paintings. So lucky with the weather. A Metro took us back to Monmatre. A brief freshen up, a cold glass of rose then back out for an evening of food and exploration.
We went for an aperitif. I was confused by Tim ordering two grand beers!?! Steve and Zoe were there. What a lovely surprise. We had dinner at Ma Biche which was good apart from a toilet fiasco. A wander back to the bar below our apartment to finish the evening with a Cointreau. I have heaved myself up over 100 steps of a spiral staircase to bed. Good night lovely people.

Tim has taken me to Paris as an addendum to my birthday celebrations. What a treat. Springtime in Paris. The Eurostar took us to Gare du Nord. We had a picnic on the train. My cranberry and vodka Cosmopolitan went well with a tuna and gherkin roll. What a fine way to travel. We are staying in Monmatre in an apartment on the 6th floor.
After unpacking our undies we had an explore. Loads of bars and restaurants. We took the advice of bnb host. Dinner in Les P’tits Gros -translates as The Little Fat One!!! Wine, bread - why can’t we have bread like the French make - delicious food. After our meal we clambered up the steps to Sacre-Coeur and watched the lights dim over Paris while the Eiffel Tower lit up. Just stunning.

We have had a new flue and woodburner fitted today. Tom and John battled through wind and hail. It was a rather dusty process. The end result looks great. We look forward to many nights of warm toes.
My lovely sister came for tea this morning. We chatted about our love for our grandchildren. The rest of afternoon I spent in my studio lino cutting a fish.

We were five minutes late to the beer festival at The Bell & Jorrocks due to the broadcast change in time of The Archers. There were many many sides of Morris. Steampunk in black with leather, many bells and rainbows of ribbons. A lovely way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday.
Tim has printed a map and we are planning our few days in Paris. I keep forgetting we are going and then get excited when I remember. Paris in the Springtime - so romantic.

Saturday, 13th April 2024 - Punch Club Finding Inspiration
The punch embroidery Harriet and I did yesterday was a course held at Water Lane in Hawkhurst. I chose something we had never tried before. What a wonderful way to spend a morning with my daughter. There wasn't even too much frustrated swearing. I can't really explain how you do it much more than it involves wool, canvas and a needle. Ian from Water Lane took us for a tour of the garden for inspiration. We were set up in once of the glass houses where Alice Liptrot - great name - led us through how to punch embroider. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Today has been a catching up day. I haven't caught up yet.

Tim looked after, fed, entertained, fed and entertained, Hetty, Raffy and Herbie while Harriet and I spent a morning together at Water Lane doing punch embroidery. It was a birthday gift to Harriet and myself. I will blog in more detail tomorrow. I have been for a walk with Tim, Tony and Wendy that ended up at a drinking session at The Ewe and Lamb and feel a little infused with white wine.
We have a path into our woods that is speckled with Fritillaria for a very short couple of weeks in Spring.

The bluebells in our woods are coming out alongside the wood anemone. They look lovely together.
Tim and I have been planning our trip to Paris. We met with Alex and Julia (from Toronto, that’s where we met them) at The Woodcock with Sarah (who is Julia’s cousin, that’s how we know them) and Nigel. They have been living in Paris and had some good tips and where to eat and what to see. We have added it to our two and a half day itinerary.
This evening I went to a WOKAS get together. The subject was to make a Picasso pot. My efforts were abysmal and ended back in the clay bag. I had a charming evening nevertheless.

Tuesday, 9th April 2024 - Jam Jar Posy
After Tom keeping me up late celebrating last night I managed to rouse myself ready for my second day of being 60. Elizabeth and Keith drove to us from a field in Frittenden in their individual camper vans. The wind in the night caused them to not have the best nights sleep due to wobble. They joined us for bacon sandwiches - some topped with fried eggs - yuk. I highly recommend pineapple chilli jam. It is an excellent pairing with bacon.
Tom packed up his car and Fable. He is now back in Northampton beavering away with work after a couple of days abstinence. It has been good to have him home for a brief and charming visit. I will miss him, Fable and his playlist.
Tim and I dragged ourselves out for a walk. We felt so much better after being blown at with a cool wind and squelching about through the mud. I still haven't mended my damn wellies.
It is very quiet at home. I have started preparing for an art exhibition. All my ideas are in my head swimming about. I need to start getting them out and onto paper. I love doing my postcards but am looking forward to making something bigger.
Part of one of my birthday presents was a jam jar posy made by Astilbe and Sorrel. Sophie is an artist when it comes to flowers. They are beautiful thank you.

Monday, 8th April 2024 - Happy 60th Birthday to Me
I am 60!!
I am typing drinking sparkling wine with my son listening to Dexys Midnight Runners - loved that band - what happened to them?!? Moving onto Rag and Bone Man - loving my birthday.
I have had the most glorious birthday. It started with a hot shower followed by croissant and coffee in the garden. It was the most sunny weather and a I had a walk with my son, husband and sister with dogs around Sissinghurst.
I was opening presents outside when Elizabeth and Keith dropped by. We opened a bottle of bubbles - it's my birthday!!! I AM DOING TO PARIS The most beautiful present from my husband.
Harriet, Hetty, Raffy and Herbie turned up with birthday cake.
Thank you to all my glorious friends who came this evening to The Bell and Jorrocks to celebrate my birthday. I think I like being 60.

I have started my birthday celebrations early. I have had a wonderful day with Harriet, Hetty, Raffy, Herbie, Tim and Tom at The Rare Breeds Centre in Woodchurch. I wanted to celebrate my 60th birthday with the grandchildren doing something that we would all enjoy. The greatest joy is watching them having fun, exploring and learning. Harriet made an amazing and thoughtful picnic. I felt very spoilt. Thank you my gorgeous family for sharing my 'big' birthday with me.
I planted auricula tiny plug plants back in the autumn. They are now looking big, healthy and flowering in my greenhouse waiting for a theatre. I love an auricula.

Saturday, 6th April 2024 - Wild Purple Orchid for Happiness
I have prepared and cooked the same breakfast for guests for the past four mornings. I will probably be up frying eggs tomorrow as it has become embedded in my daily routine. I need to find some exercises to strengthen my back. Bending cleaning the rooms makes my back grouchy and spasm.
Tom has arrived for my birthday celebrations that start tomorrow. Fable needed a walk after being sat in the car for over two hours. I wore wellies and strode happily through the mud and puddles until I remembered I had not fixed the hole in my right boot! We posted my latest postcards, spotted a coterie (new collective noun for me to learn) of purple orchids and walked past The Bull. We opened beer and wine back at home. I reduced our egg mountain by making cheese and mushrooms omelettes. Well done hens.
There are load of entries on the internet about purple orchids. A lot to do with the double tubors. You can look that up yourself as I can't bring myself to put it in print. I will stick with the more pleasant symbolism of purity, prosperity and happiness.

Friday, 5th April 2024 - Wild Violets for Healing
A lovely friend bought me coffee at Water Lane this morning. Thank you lovely lady. I popped by my sister's but she wasn't home so I went to the supermarket and got breakfast provisions for guests. Tescos had pots made from recycled fishing line and nets which looked perfect for Harriet's flourishing plants. I messaged her and while waiting for a reply went back to Lindsey's who had returned home. We sat in her summer house which seems to be a nursery for queen wasps and drank tea and ate digestive biscuits watching the wind blowing Fritha's ears about.
There was a message on Instagram saying that the florist at Hartley wasn't open today due to being unwell. Today's postcard is going to Sophie. Wild violets are good at healing sore throats, coughs, inflammation and yin deficiency. The leaves are full of vitamin A, C, rutin and quercetin. Not knowing what was wrong with Sophie I thought maybe she had one of the ailments.

Thursday, 4th April 2024 - Chancing the Traffic
I have been catching up with 'stuff' today. It is very satisfying to get to the bottom of the laundry basket. Simple pleasures.
Tim and I called into Mike and Pippa's for tea. Mike suggested a walk up the road to The Print House. At 5pm I wondered if it seemed too early to be having a white wine spritzer. I had two and they were thoroughly enjoyable.

Wednesday, 3rd April 2024 - Driving Home
Happy 29th birthday to Harriet. Wow, where did those years go.
Tim and I drove to wish our amazing daughter a happy birthday. Tim donned his work clothes and painted doors and walls in Harriet and Brett's flat. Harriet served us all coffee and pastries. Herbie delivered Harriet's birthday presents. Tim and Brett were painting at such speed they ran out of paint. Harriet, Herbie and I took to the shops to find more paint and more food. Conversation in the car was varied from handbrakes and gears to emotions and adventures. I was very pleased with my purchase. I bought a whole salmon reduced from £35 to £3.50. It is now chopped up and in our freezer. Herbie helped me choose a plant for a friend who very sadly has recently lost their very much loved dog. It has been a good day.

Tuesday, 2nd April 2024 - Window Shopping in Cranbrook
On our last trip to Cranbrook Sarah and I vowed to try a different coffee venue after a grumpy greeting at Wendy's. We both forgot and ended up having very good coffee and a very needed half a bacon roll with chilli jam. We have become creatures of habit. It is comforting and means we can get to the nitty gritty of conversation about life in our happy space. Another regular haunt is the charity shop. There was nearly a bust-up with Sarah and the manager over the price of a stack of plates. I left them to it and pretended to be very interested in the clothing. I found books and a game for Hetty, Raffy and Herbie.
Once back home I had to reinstate my bnb rooms after the grandchildrens visit. Now all clean and pristine ready for today's guests. They have been before so I didn't get my usual guest arriving nerves.
The fridge is full of tasty bowls of bits of pieces left over from the weekend meals. I think I will have cold chicken followed by rice pudding and rhubarb. I made a triple sized rice pudding thinking it would be popular but none of the grandchildren liked it. Tim and I are making a valiant attempt at eating it.
Tony and Wendy picked us up for a drink at The Bell and Jorrocks, they were closing at 8pm so we went onto The Milkhouse, they were closing early too. We were extricated from two pubs in one evening!!!
