Appealing to people who empathize with the nostr idealistic vision (or appreciate it as a system with network effect) means getting stuck in the early adopter phase forever. You can't expect growth from there.
Nostr means nothing without applications built on it, and people use applications when they find them useful, it solves a problem for them. It's only apps that bring people. I give a lot of credit to SaaS platforms that grow because they solve a problem, though they might be fixing some inherently fiat problem and/or creating new ones along the way.
If 0.01% of the population cares about censorship resistance, that is the adoption ceiling.
As for communities, I mean a forum. The most basic community building block. To give an example of problems; you can't view reddit content when signed out or with a VPN. X is also limited. Discord same. Creating accounts is a pain many people agree on. Nostr can help fix that.
Nostr has a lot more interesting value props than censorship resistance that applications can leverage to alleviate people's actual, real problems. Applications should focus on those.

This is a bit exaggerated, but if I had to find a reason it is: lack of great tools for communities.
Nostr today has only one real great UX and value prop: a Twitter replacement.
We need multiple forms of onramps not just one. Onramping new people also means solving their problems, not our imaginary ones.
Not saying communities is easy or wasn't attempted by smart devs but it's reality.

I never got to understand the low level stuff of "communities" but guys - aren't we overthinking and overengineering this?
I mean Reddit. Forum. Stack overflow. Hacker news. Stacker.news.
A basic title and a markdown body upon opening it. Replies/zaps to those items. We have WoT tools, we have blacklists on relays. What else is possibly needed?
NOT chat or Discord. NOT a feed where main content is listed (what i see on Amethyst/satellite). Totally different UX.

No, Zapstore never calculated any of this client side. I could do the intersection but it's too much processing and bandwidth, all without any Pagerank sorting. Awful UX.
I used to have an API service powered by Memgraph, pretty sure we discussed it.
And now, about to launch @nprofile…prv3 which is DVM-based and currently being tested out in the latest Zapstore. It supports personalized Pagerank and it's blazing fast. This is what I've been building with @nprofile…pqkh , which I also thought you knew?
I asked you earlier because I wanted to know how you'd approach the Zapstore usecase purely with NIP-85, as I didn't (and still don't) see how that is better than a DVM.

DVMs are not the perfect design but honestly it's not that hard. Instead of sending a REQ you publish a signed request event.
I never tried building a WoT relay so I don't know.
Besides DVMs and the monetization, it makes sense to me for this to be a service rather than precomputed events for the use-cases that clients have (verifying reputation, sorting, recommending follows, etc). Are you going to keep 30382 events for all permutations of pubkeys, for all services, sorted by all different algos, and all reflecting the latest updates to contact lists? A service really is most suited tor this kind of thing, imo.
Also, kind 30382 is too generic and not expressive enough for our needs.
If you'd like, tell me how I would use those to replicate the WoT i currently have on Zapstore (follows who follow). Are you familiar with that? No, it's not recommended follows. It's who of my follows, follow the signer of an app, sorted and limited to top 5.
We can continue the discussion next week when I publish the DVM PRs, as I would love to hear your input and if it could potentially work for your usecase and algos

GrapheneOS is fantastic. I use it every day and kind of take it for granted, it's good to stop for a minute and be grateful that it exists.
It runs smooth on my Pixel, I got the hang of fine-grained permissions, used multiple profiles and the private space. I have most of the apps I need, battery is quite good, and Google or big tech is refreshingly absent.
The only noticeable downgrade from an iPhone in my experience is the camera and image-related software. Camera app is too basic and sometimes crashes, image quality is average, and image editing capabilities are very limited.
In all other aspects, definitely an upgrade. Highly recommend making the move.

Read it. Agree with the general idea and I'm definitely not against corporate led initiatives. I think it's also misleading to associate nostr with the bazaar that is described there. Just like with the Linux kernel, there is strong protection of NIP-01 (and a few others) here. It is not up for grabs.
A major omission here is: protocols. We are talking about networks and network effects not products, as most of the examples he gives.
Regarding growth, I don't know where those numbers come from but I'm sure nostr has a way bigger brand than Pubky. It's simpler to understand, too. I perused Pubky docs and there is not a single hint on how to build anything. I'm also lost with so many brands: Holepunch, Pear stack, Keet, Synonym, Hypercore, Pubky, etc.
And John is a perfectionist. I understand because I am too. It has its good and bad sides. Specifically to bootstrap a network and get network effects a perfectionist approach does not help. Just to give two examples OSI was technically more perfect than TCP/IP, Betamax was technically more perfect than VHS - and they both lost. I'm focusing on building something great but NOT at the protocol level.

There is middle ground too, where nostrdb is used to cache certain kinds (vs everything) and the local relay is used for certain other kinds (vs always)
The main issue with the local relay is that you can't count on it so you need a database anyway

I see the advantage of using a device relay but I'm unsure of the UX. Are you going to ask your users to download and continually run citrine in order to use your app? It will also depend on the overlap - for Amethyst and Zapstore it's probably none

Does it feel wrong to access memory synchronously?
It all depends on the i/o operation, where and for how long it's blocking. Nostrdb should be crazy fast, way faster than sqlite3 whose most popular bindings are...also sync.
Sync allows for API design that async does not, and I want that flexibility at this lower level. You can always turn sync into async but not the other way round.

Oh yes, they are definitely metabolically damaged.
Stress is not necessarily low in that group, and if it is, it's because they are constantly drunk. But alcohol is a stressor. Maybe the environment. Probably something related to exposure to certain microorganisms or traumas at specific ages in life.
I've been watching this pattern since 2013 (homeless and otherwise) and the metabolism-hair theory does not match my observations.
