I ended up labeled a spammer by them after sending a single email on a new domain because I made a configuration error. The TLD registrar nuked the domain permanently. I don't know what sort of report Mailgun filed with the registrar. I never used Mailgun again. You're lucky you were able to get them to respond to you. I had no such luck.

@nprofile…ktgr This happened to me on my instance and I tried everything to fix the corrupted indexes, using expert advice, and couldn't fix it. I finally restored from a backup, which took 12 hours. It happened to me because I made a change to Friendica and restarted it while everything was still running. I know this is not helping you in your current situation, but I want to understand what may have caused this to happen to you and to help other Admins.
Do you have a theory as to what brought this about?
Whenever I am making any changes to Friendica now, I take MariaDB and Apache2 down, and I make a complete backup of the database disk to another disk (sudo cp -rp /mnt/friendica_db_volume_nyc1_01/mariadb /mnt/friendica_backups/) because I never ever want to go through this again. I also take a disk snapshot on Digital Ocean of the external DB drive as well, and have the regular backup available. Total paranoia now.
Good luck. Keep us posted on how you overcome this and what you learn.

If you're willing to dig more into this, you can set up a test account on mine and see if the Bluesky notifications work. It might indicate whether it's an issue related to the server that you're on or the problem is somewhere else.

@nprofile…5s90 Matrix, I think, is identical to Discord in being user-friendly, other than, "pick a server", which for most humans seems as difficult as math. XMPP/Jabber isn't as user-friendly in my opinion, which is why I think Matrix will eventually overpower it.
On the "pick a server", this is the problem when techie people try communicating with other humans. They should have said, "Pick a service provider". This, people understand. Everyone easily picked an email service provider without a second thought. But if they had to pick a server, it would have taken people a lot longer to use email. People pick an electric and gas service provider, they pick insurance providers. Heating system maintenance providers. They don't pick a freaking server.
"Pick a server", when you think about it, makes no sense, and a confused market never buys.

@nprofile…5s90 I know you didn't create this, so this isn't directed to you. I'm just putting it out there, for information and education, that WhatsApp -> Signal is misleading and, I believe, incorrect information.
Signal, while the good guys, currently, is still under control of a single entity running on a single cluster of servers that they own and control, and this is NOT what the Fediverse is about. This is hardly "Fediverse".
I would have preferred Discord -> Matrix, and WhatsApp -> Jabber/XMPP.

Tell your daughter my mother always gave me Coca-Cola syrup when I had stomach problems (back in the day in NYC you could buy the syrup and make your own coca-cola, just as you liked it). So we could get the full dose. And, it worked. If she thinks it's unhealthy, tell her this forces the germs to eat it to make them sick! Isn't this a good thing then when you're sick?

@nprofile…9gdm This is what self-hosting is about. Living in a cloud of confusion because you're dealing with a bunch of different tech, none of which you'd ever be able to become an expert in. So, there's a lot of trial and error. This is so familiar. And the fun of it.
The ALTER statement format, I believe, is wrong. It is showing single quotes around "mysql_native_password" which makes it a literal string. But, IDENTIFIED WITH specifies the name of the authentication plugin, not a string. Can you try instead:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED WITH mysql_native_password BY '<your-new-root-password>';
Reference: dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/e… and the section showing:
| IDENTIFIED WITH auth_plugin BY 'auth_string'
Notice, no single quotes around auth_plugin

What happens when you run "sudo mysql" ?
If it opens and connects, then it's still using socket-based authentication. Then I would manually run the ALTER, FLUSH, and exit. Then try to restart ghost.
If it doesn't open, but asks for the password, and the password works, then this change in the authentication method already was done and the problem isn't this particular step. Does ghost doctor provide any diagnostics?

@nprofile…9gdm I don't think this error means a disastrous install problem.
ECONNREFUSED is a TCP error, so this tells me you are not connecting with a socket, but using a TCP connection on port 3306. So why would the connection be refused?
What I would do next, from the command line, is to see if anything is even listening on port 3308. Depending on whether anything accepts the connection, it gives the next debugging step.
telnet, btw, is not natively installed on Ubuntu, so you may need to do this first before continuing:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install telnetd
Then:
telnet localhost 3308
So, is anything listening? If not, then either the database didn't start or it's listening on a different port.
If something is listening, then try to access the database directly:
mysql -h localhost -u root -p 3308
If this fails, hopefully you get a meaningful error message telling you why. Maybe a DB issue, or perhaps no database is up.
If it works, then your database is up and running and listening on port 3308. This is good news. So either your Ghost configuration has the wrong host/port information for the database, or perhaps the connection needs or doesn't need an SSL connection.
But, these are the steps I'd do first just to get additional information about the issue.

@nprofile…09mr I agree with you. You'll be investing time and effort into your Ghost blog. You don't want to run in an unsupported environment because if you have to migrate later, it will be worse. So, the effort and time now is worth it, and the experience you gain will certainly be worth it, and usable for your other self-hosting.
