Most of them will likely not know about reticulum, but many will interested in packet radio or other digital modes. Start the conversations there.
Big Picture:
Ham radio clubs are a good place to learn about radio and meet other people who are interested. Locally, you may initially be the one that is the go to guy on that topic. The hobby is currently very rapidly changing demographically and interest wise. Historically, being an electrical engineer and being proficient in Morse code was where the action was. Now things are moving to software defined radios and digital transmissions. Mesh radios are just now becoming a topic of great interest. Open source is also big in ham radio. Go check one out.

For longer than I'd like to admit, I had no idea how to convert radio frequency signals back to the data they originated from. Finally, I sat down and worked it out... now I'm here to share it with you.
Starting off, we will use GQRX to locate the carrier, gnuradio-companion to record the energy to a file, and then Inspectrum to inspect the electromagnetic wave, converting it back to the originally transmitted information. I hope this allows someone to find a cool bug and get paid out significantly in bug bounty, or regardless create a more secure autonomous world based on radio signals, as devices rely on electromagnetic waves in increased capacity every day.

You can, they are in progress of making an improved UX for the t-deck. It will be very slick. Depending on your dev skills, you can start playing with early versions today. It just wont be available in the easy to use web firmware flasher. Not sure when it will be delivered. For now, it is very similar to UX of the other nodes with a keyboard attached and you can still Bluetooth in via phone etc.

I think getting two Helltec v3’s is a good starting place. Every option is good. Some may be more useful for remote solar nodes than others due to power draw. Some have GPS functionality by default, for most of them you can add it.
They did an amazing job on the devices page. Very user friendly way to learn about each device.

“Unless you've been living under a rock, you know about the devastation caused by hurricane Helene. Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee have all been impacted by the storm. In the particularly hard hit area near Ashville, NC ham radio has been used to great effect for everything from health and welfare checks to directing supply drops and emergency evacuation requests. While there have been many hams (and non hams) who have been instrumental in the effort radio has played, one in particular stands out. Dan Gitro, K2DMG, has done an amazing job handling an insane amount of traffic. Dan, good on you man. You deserve all of the praise you're receiving.
While listening to the traffic, it occurred to me that there's a lot that people don't consider when looking at radio for emergency preparedness. I figured I'd discuss some of the things I consider when looking at radios for this purpose, and what I'd buy and what I'd skip. This disaster has put radio's role in a whole new light, and I think a lot of people will start to seriously consider their communications plan when preparing for disasters. Why are people excited about FM capabilities for CB radios?
Historically, one major limitation of CB radios has been the number of channels (or frequencies). Traditional CB radios only operate on 40 channels and in the following modes:
AM (Amplitude Modulation) and
Single Side Band or SBB, which includes Upper Sideband (USB) and Lower Sideband (LSB).
FM (Frequency Modulation) mode offers much better sound quality when communicating via radio and improves the CB experience by leaps and bounds. This is the biggest change to CB radio technology since its expansion from 23 to 40 channels in 1977.
FM mode is the best of all worlds when it comes to CB radio. The equipment is affordable, compatible with existing CB setups, and offers the best available sound quality due to the "capture effect," meaning that one strong signal is selected, and other signals are suppressed.
