My response to ‘revolutionary publishers’ shilling AI.
You’re not disrupting anything.
Human action dictates whether a book succeeds or fails.
Last week, a picture of the four smug founder dudes from ‘revolutionary publisher’ Spines went viral.
Spines (https://x.com/Spines_com) is a platform that automates editing, covers, translation, audiobooks, and more.
The company raised $16m in VC and plans to publish 8,000 books next year.
Most people were pissed off when they saw the news:
-Publishers claiming it’s a predatory vanity press
-Authors bemoaning the fees, saying KDP is cheaper
-Readers questioning the need for a tranche of low-quality titles
-Editors and translators in fear of losing work
As a publisher with a similar model, I’m not pissed; I’m ambivalent.
Spines charges authors up to $5k to ‘harness the power of AI’.
True, they do provide authors with a cheap and fast option, while traditional publishers can take years to release a book.
All 8,000 books fail without anyone to read them.
When The Bookseller asked Spines to provide sales data for their ‘bestsellers,’ Spines refused 😅.
The lesson? Do the work or become the product.
Microsoft is also working with big publishers to train their AI models on their books, and many big tech firms and publishing houses are getting involved.
Here’s what I think is really going on…
It’s about the data. They want to train their LLMs on your manuscripts.
Spines and Microsoft don’t give a fuck if you sell any copies.
They want to build machines capable of cutting humans out of the creative process. They might even succeed.
My prediction? Penguin Random House will buy spines within 24 months.
But our community won’t give up the right to thought.

The situation won't be much different from the current #fiat system, except for one crucial aspect: the possibility to opt-out. Bitcoin offers an alternative for those who want to escape the legacy financial system.
Most people will never care how their money operates, just like they don't care about the inner workings of their cars. Number go up, but it's mostly due to bitcoin being denominated in hyperinflating fiat currency rather than the immediate adoption of hard money standard.
We're unlikely to witness hyperbitcoinization during our lifetimes. So, take a breath and remember that bitcoin's path to widespread adoption will be gradual. Don’t worry about missing out on bitcoin before it "moons.”

It’s the key to a happy and effective life. I used to worry a lot about things that ended up owning me. I thought I was free but truly far from it. After shaking the fear, I am more relaxed and able to contribute, build and stack more!

#Bitcoin will not set you free.
When I left #fiat originally in 2011, I had no assets to my name and no cash. Everything I owned fit in a small backpack.
My key to freedom was not owning anything. That helped me realize I only needed my skills and will to advance. Bitcoin, of course, expedites everything, but you can’t buy freedom even with absolutely hard money.
You can always accumulate more using your skills. What holds many to fiat is the idea that spending bitcoin or not stacking hard enough makes you miss out on monumental gains. This may be true, but it’s a trader, not a builder mindset.
Builders never go hungry.
Don’t to be afraid of losing anything. This is a lesson I learned the hard way having lost everything including the will to live. As my final resort, I tried detatching from fiat and it fixed everything.
Bitcoin is not the answer, not needing it is.

One year ago, my health was a disaster. 😢
I could barely do one pull-up and could not bother to exercise or eat well. 👎
I decided to start practicing what I preach. No more excuses. ☝️

I was 10kg too heavy, which hindered every aspect of my life — very precisely, my passion: bouldering. Imagine climbing an inclined wall with 10kg extra strapped to your waist.

But being able to compete in an obscure sport was not enough.
