Used to be the Rule of 370 back when backs got that many carries. If you got 370, you were toast.
But the truth is most backs have short peaks, so anyone getting 370 was probably on the way down anyway. IOW, you don’t get a huge workload unless you’re at peak, and if a peak is only 2-3 years.
But McCaffrey is top-5 all time, many of his touches are receptions which are less taxing (fewer big bodies to tackle you outside the tackles) and those touches were spread out over 20 games instead of 17.
Plus the Niners run block so well, he’s often at the second or third level when he gets tackled.
Still high risk, but also highest reward.

It's easy to be correct about things like bitcoin or the mRNA shots because so many people are bribed not to see what’s in front of their faces.
Much harder to be correct when predicting sports outcomes as the market is much smarter and less biased.
Possible edge IMO comes from observing the problem — Team X plays Team Y, considering it and then forgetting about it. Come back to it a couple days later. Often you will know what side you feel strongly about. (Provided you have sufficient experience picking games.)

QUARTERBACK RANKINGS
(for fantasy football)
These are my very preliminary QB rankings, my only research being the RotoWire depth charts and player notes.
Tier 1
Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts
I don’t know who Allen will throw to other than Dalton Kincaid, but he needs only 25-ish TD passes to be the QB1 if he stays healthy, given all the rushing numbers. Hurts is second only because he’s not as good in real life, and there’s some small risk of implosion, skills-wise. But 10-plus TDs on the ground creates its own tier.
Tier 2
Patrick Mahomes, Anthony Richardson, Lamar Jackson
What’s odd about this tier is how different these players are. Mahomes, despite a poor 2023 regular season, gets in because he’s the GOAT, and Andy Reid is a arguably the greatest offensive coach of all time. Richardson could easily be the 1.1, but injury risk and lack of track record give him a much lower floor. Jackson doesn’t get the goal line looks that often, especially with Derrick Henry in tow, but obviously his running gives him a huge lift.

Tier 3
CJ Stroud, Kyler Murray, Jordan Love, Dak Prescott
Stroud has a loaded receiving corps now with Stefon Diggs on the team, and he’d be my bet to lead the league in passing yards. But he doesn’t run much, and that caps his ceiling slightly. I almost put him in Tier 2 because you can make the case he’s basically Mahomes with 200 fewer rushing yards. Murray is another year off his ACL tear, runs a lot and gets Marvin Harrison. It’s still an open question whether he’s good, though. Love looks like a player, runs a little and has young, developing wideouts. Prescott is in a pass-heavy offense, has an elite WR1 and is the ultimate stat-padder which works in fantasy. (You could just push all four into Tier 2 and make it seven deep, as the cutoff is a bit arbitrary.)
Tier 4
Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Brock Purdy, Kirk Cousins, Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, Trevor Lawrence.
This is the tier of the passing-only QBs with the exception of Herbert who can run, but might be hamstrung by a run-heavy offense, and Lawrence, who might not be good. I would gamble on Herbert’s athleticism and skills nonetheless if he falls into this tier. And Lawrence gets a much-needed rookie deep threat which could open things up. Burrow is Tier 3 if he would stay healthy, but he obviously carries more risk on that front, and I don’t think he’ll run much now.
Tier 5
Deshaun Watson, Daniel Jones, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, Caleb Williams, Sam Darnold, Jayden Daniels, Baker Mayfield, Geno Smith
Watson might be cooked, but there’s still upside if he can run like he used to. Jones has a big ceiling with his mobility and Malik Nabers on the team. Stafford has two top receivers and a great offensive coach. Rodgers is old, but he has weapons now, and Williams has a loaded receiving corps. People might laugh at Darnold in this tier, but he’s mobile and has Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson. If he keeps the job (a big if), he has upside, which is what you want in this tier. Mayfield and Smith are solid and boring, which is also fine if you wait forever on QB. Daniels’ mobility puts him here instead of the scrub tier.
Tier 6 (Scrubs)
Russell Wilson, Derek Carr, Will Levis, Drake Maye, Raiders QBs, Bo Nix
These are the scrubs. One or two might not turn out to be scrubs, but it’s hard to get excited about any of them.
These rankings will change, but I like to get my preliminary ones down on paper before I get influenced by ADP and training camp hype.

I was on the fence about going all in for NFL or just half-assing this substack and refunding everyone their money. On the one hand I will definitely have some fantasy teams and be watching on Sundays, but on the other do I want to be glued to the TV for seven hours every week and write up all the standalone games again?
I’m definitely half-assing baseball and enjoying it. That’s why I outsourced my teams the last two years, and I don’t feel I’m missing much. I guess my lack of close watching of MLB has kept me out of the MLB conversation on social media, but I feel like that ship had mostly sailed anyway when that community lost its mind in woke psychosis and pharmaceutical salesmanship zealotry. The NFL crowd is, on balance, more normal. Baseball’s conduciveness to statistical measurement is apparently to ideologically-compliant laptop-class midwits like Taylor Swift to teenage girls.
But the main reason I’ve decided to go all-in again on NFL (and hence this substack) is from a chance post I made on nostr yesterday that opened my eyes to what’s possible there. I mentioned Heather is writing a tourism/restaurant guide for Lisbon to send to the legions of friends and friends of friends who are constantly visiting, and immediately some of the protocol’s most prominent developers responded saying she should definitely post it, and there would be great interest in such a thing. (Heather has not yet agreed to do this, but I am working on her.)
And I thought, this niche social media protocol (which I firmly still believe is the future for reasons enumerated elsewhere) is the perfect place to make quality content because its readers are committed to growing the decentralized alternative to corporate social media platforms. Anyone will support (and zap, i.e., pay with bitcoin via the lightning network) quality content in which they’re interested much more than on Twitter where there is so much of it already, algorithms favoring established players and no particular loyalty or enthusiasm for the platform. It’s a small, but rapidly growing and well capitalized niche of smart and indepdent thinking people looking to promote and support freedom technology.
So I’m going to give it a serious go because the opportunity there is suddenly interesting to me, more so than simpy increasing readership/revenue of the newsletter. Don’t get me wrong, I like to make money as much as the next guy but revenue is just gross. (This joke fell flat on Twitter and nostr, but that’s no reason not to foist it on my substack readers too.)
I still won’t do waiver wire bullshit or tell you who to start and sit each week. You should just subscribe to RotoWire (in which I no longer have any financial interest) for that. I’m going to post a lot of observations, which means I actually have to observe a lot of NFL. And of course, I will post it here too (the articles at least), but for the daily posts, you’ll have to go to nostr. (I would post those here, but I don’t think you want to get 5 emails a day from my substack.)

Seems like injuries to key players are up too, but maybe that’s just my teams.

Disappointing to see the GOAT Djokovic have to drop out with a knee injury. But this is how it more or less goes for everyone as they get old. I actually think to a large extent it’s not that people lose their skills so much as the amount of work it takes to stay healthy and recover from repetitive stress and injuries becomes insurmountable.
Jerry Rice played WR into his 40s only because he was such a maniac at training, but even he got got by Father Time.

My fantasy baseball teams are crushed by injuries. High stakes team lost its top pitcher (hamstring), second pitcher (TJ surgery), top closer (oblique), third pitcher (hamstring), seventh and eighth pitchers.
Also top hitter (hamstring) and a few others. It’s only June 2.
Baseball is not supposed to be as hazardous as NFL, but seems like it.

Players' political views should be off limits. If Kaepernick wants to protest police brutality or Butker wants to advocate for the nuclear family, the teams/leagues should stay out of it.
If fans don’t like it, they can say whatever they like, but the teams should send a clear message they won’t stifle player speech.
If you’re a fan who doesn’t like a player, go post about it on nostr, start a blog or a podcasts. Stop watching that team on TV, whatever. But your remedy is not to get him blackballed from the game.
Teams are cowardly about this, should take a clear stand.

He's the closest to making it of the guys I left out. I think if he had *any* playoff success (not necessarily his fault, but it is the whole goal of the sport), or had he aged better (really fell off a cliff his last 5 years except for one decent rebound in 2021), I would have put him in. Every era has its demographic you are allowed to discriminate against. Bauer (Trump supporting cracker) fits the bill for this one. Only reason he’s not signed, especially given the decimation of pitching due to injuries this year.
(Not only were all charges against him retracted and his accuser exposed for premeditated extortion, but there are other active major leaguers who served far smaller suspensions who actually were guilty of domestic abuse.)

Completed a Series A Raise from my daughter Sasha to do the NFBKC’s NBA Playoff Contest.
She agreed to invest 15 euros for a 10 percent stake. ($150 entry, $10K grand prize.)
The investment came out of her winnings from our regular season team, which finished 16th overall out of nearly 300 teams, won us $700, $100 of which went to her.

Beat Chris Liss 1
I did my first NFBC Beat Chris Liss league this afternoon — it’s the usual $350 buy-in, $150K grand-prize, 12-team variety.
One wrinkle is I made my own cheat sheet, but didn’t look at any projections or ADP, only news and notes on RotoWire. The idea was to think for myself, avoid the group-think that kicks in once people come to a consensus about where players should be drafted.
But in the end I was done in by my own greed and stupidity. I have Jackson Chourio rated as my No. 13 OF, a fourth or fifth-round pick, but I saw in the draft room his ADP was 147, so I waited on him well after many players below him on my sheet had gone, thinking I could get him at pick 128. He went 126, and that put me on tilt for about five rounds.
Of course, Chourio is at ADP 130 over the last week, and my not looking at ADP meant I hadn’t printed out recent ADP, which meant I was looking at old ADP and cutting it much closer than I would have. Basically if I were going to do this experiment for real, I would have taken him instead of Josh Lowe — in the fifth round — but it was impossible not to know he’d be there afterwards, only not as long as I had guessed.
(I should have realized ADP went back to October, before he signed his contract virtually guaranteeing he opens the season on the roster, and purposely drafted him earlier. But as it was February 7, I figured the ADP on the site was close enough. The whole thing was very annoying and undercut the purpose of the whole exercise.)
That said I’m otherwise happy with this team. I skimped on second closer per the plan and waited on catcher and MI too.
Here are the overall results:
1.8 Corbin Carroll — I expected to get Fernando Tatis, and failing that, Juan Soto who I love on the Yankees this year. But there was Carroll, a massive source of steals as well, and I snap-called it at pick 8.
2.5 Bryce Harper — This was a boring pick, but I wanted first basemen and outfielders early, and Harper even runs a little. I had considered Corbin Burnes, who I like on the Orioles, but two Corbins in two picks would be excessive.
3.8 Zac Gallen — He was the next pitcher on my board — consistent, reliable and with a low walk rate.
4.5 Tyler Glasnow — I was set to take Michael Harris, but got sniped, so I was about to take Max Fried, the next pitcher on my board, when Greg Ambrosius mentioned Glasnow, and I remembered thinking about him yesterday as a potential league winner. So I jumped him past Fried.
5.8 Josh Lowe — I wanted more OFs, and while Chourio was top on my board, I knew I could wait on him, and Lowe was next.
6.5 Manny Machado — Corners and OF early, and I wanted some more pop as Carroll is not a huge HR guy for a first rounder.
7.8 Jordan Walker — Again, I would have taken Chourio, but knew I could wait. Walker is 6-6, 250, so the power could be there in Year 2, and he’s a decent source of average and even runs a little.
8.5 Paul Sewald — Closers were flying off the board, and Sewald is a good pitcher. I wanted to have one solid closer and speculate on the others.
9.8 Ketel Marte — He’s a good source of pop and average from second base, and I had him ahead of some of the guys who were already drafted. One of the drafters commented how I was taking too many Diamondbacks (four.)
10.5 Sonny Gray — I got sniped on Justin Verlander by half a round, well ahead of his ADP, and that should have been my cue to take Chourio. But I got greedy, took Gray and thought I could wait another round.
11.8 Carlos Rodon — I was tilted. I like Rodon to bounce back, and I took him aggressively ahead of ADP to make up for the Chourio miss.
12.5 Thairo Estrada — He’s solid, and he qualifies at 2B and SS. I was still tilted and just took a player near the top of my MI rankings.
13.8 Alec Bohm — He was my top remaining 3B, though I realized later I had Josh Naylor slightly ahead of him at 1B and could have taken him. I like the quality corners. and he’s a nice stack with Harper.
14.5 Mitch Garver — Catchers were flying off, and I liked getting one who doesn’t actually have to play catcher. Garver can get a lot of at-bats as a full-time DH.
15.8 Shota Imanaga — I was still tilted, and just took an interesting player in a decent situation.
16.5 Chas McCormick — He was far and away the highest remaining OF on my board. I was still tilted.
17.8 Yu Darvish — I jumped him 50 spots per ADP because I love old pitchers coming off mediocre seasons. I felt good about this and finally untilted.
18.5 Jarred Kelenic — Another pick I’m happy about. I have him ranked higher than ADP — think there’s real upside now that he’s free from the Mariners organization.
19.8 David Robertson — I was happy to get an old warhorse possible closer for a good team. I don’t trust Jose LeClerc, either.
20.5 Yuki Matsui — He’s in the saves mix in San Diego, and Roberto Suarez has never been a closer. My draft was going a lot better now.
21.8 Kenta Maeda — Another veteran pitcher I was targeting.
22.5 Giancarlo Stanton — He should hit in the heart of the Yankees order, he just has to be 100 percent healthy for a few months to earn this price.
23.8 Sal Frelick — The Brewers are rebuilding, so he should play. Good average and steals are possible, and he’s in a good park.
24.5 Jorge Polanco — I probably should have taken Jonathan India a couple rounds earlier, but when I missed on him, I waited for Polanco who still has some pop and could steal 5-10 bags in a full season.
25.8 Frankie Montas — I thought he was worth a gamble at this point. Just looking for upside.
26.5 Danny Jansen — A second catcher with some pop
27.8 Jordan Westburg — I needed a backup corner and middle and Westburg does both. He’s also a decent prospect on a good team.
28.5 Gavin Stone — He’s a prospect who could get a shot early in the year with the best team in baseball. You never know when the light bulb might go on.
29.8 Woo-Suk Go — Another potential closer for the Padres. If he sucks, he can go too.
30.5 J.P. Crawford — This is why I like to wait on middle infield. He’s a full-time leadoff guy with some pop and great plate skills for a good team.

The Team I Wish I Had Drafted
Now that my fantasy season is over (except for my Steak League team which looks like an eater or self-buyer at worst), I'd like to focus on what might have been. If I only knew on draft day what I know now, here's the team I would have assembled:
1.1: Nick Chubb
I like his matchup in Week 1, and while I’m worried about his durability, I feel like rolling the dice a bit. Does the Justin Jefferson owner want a sidebet? Name your price.
2.12 Mike Evans
This might be a reach, but give me the guy that gets 1,000 yards every year over scrubs who get injured. Super high floor pick here. You want to double the side? Good with me.
3.12 Amari Cooper
It’s important to advance in the playoffs, and I love his Week 15 and 16 matchups against the Bears and Texans.
4.1 J.K. Dobbins
Love his upside, and you can’t be afraid of injuries, especially when you have the power of perfect foresight. My starting backfield for Week 1 is set!
5.12 Rachaad White
Need to get the giga-Rachaad here — running back depth is always key.
6.1 Alvin Kamara
I bumped him up a couple spots for kicking someone’s ass at a club. Real man.
7.12 James Connor
I know five running backs in the first seven picks is a lot, but I want guys with good playoff matchups.
8.1 Dak Prescott
Why waste an early pick on Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow when you can get reach for Prescott with the first pick of Round 8?

I think this is the year he stays relatively healthy. Love the speed and the scheme. My only concern is can he hold up through the *entire* season.

I love his playoff matchups and think he could break out were he ever paired with an older, out-of-football type quarterback willing to take shots down the field.

Rookie tight ends are usually bad picks, but I see LaPorta as an Aaron Hernandez-level talent who can produce right away.

I’m a little thin at receiver and need someone who has good matchups in the playoffs.

Love to lock up a solid defense and kicker early, let other people chase those important positions late.

I really needed a receiver here, but couldn’t pass up on dog-house prone Cam Akers’ backup.

There’s no way he holds up all year at 165 pounds, but he’s fast, and I really think the Texans scored with C.J. Stroud over Bryce Young.
17.1 Puka Nacua
Who? He’s a Rams rookie I could probably get on waivers when Dobbins inevitably is out for the year, but I love his tape and can’t risk it with Cooper Kupp iffy for the start of the year.
18.12 Raiders Defense
I love their Week 15 and 16 matchups in the playoffs. Once they get rid of that NLM Josh McDaniels and install a coach with balls, I have a feeling that unit will take off.
19.1 Saints Kicker
I need someone who will do better than the Cowboys kicker who could slump in Weeks 15 and 17.
20.12 Joe Flacco
I suppose I need a backup QB, and why not take one that’s 38 years old, been terrible for a decade and is out of the league?

This obviously isn't the best possible team I could have drafted, but I'm positive it would have made the playoffs and crushed in every round. And the side-bet revenue — three rookie receivers, Evans and Cooper! — would probably exceed whatever the league prize is. And I could dominate despite losing my 1.1 pick in Week 2.
