I did with a pre-built Raspberry Pi and Umbrel a few years ago that was very much what he talked about in the video: the tech head set it up for me (base user). Don’t want to break it so don’t do much with it. Thinking I want to truly use my own server, if there’s a reliable I-don’t-have-to-be-a-dev setup available now. Do you have a Start9?

Looking out the window while making my morning tea, thought it was less cloudy than yesterday, so might get in an outside walk before the afternoon storm. Checked weather app to see when they thought the storm would come through (not that they are especially accurate, but in a few hours vs midnight is a decent ballpark to know).

Trying out a glove when using Procreate on my iPad. I’ve seen other artist use these, but had put off buying one for myself. The kawaii drawing club I’ve joined recommended this brand. It feels better than I thought it would, and does cut down on unwanted gestures. So far so good. 👍✍️

An artist I love (Stefan Große Halbuer) opened up an online shop to buy prints. He said in his email there’s some artwork he can’t upload (commissions, part of another project, etc.), but if you didn’t see something you wanted, email him.
So I did.
He replied that the pieces I wanted prints of would be released later, but here’s 2 urls I could use to order now and then he’d take them down.

For me, being retired after 30+ years, it’s all about spending my time as I want to, no longer at the whim of someone else.
I can stay up until 4 am on Sunday because I’m working on one of my projects and “Monday” doesn’t matter anymore.
I can wake up at 2 pm the next day.
And at 4:30 pm, I can sit in my backyard, playing with art stuff, while the unretired are getting ready to leave work and sit in rush hour.

24” x 30” Mixed Media Canvas Update: cloud sessions 1 of ???
Added a mix of white and parchment color as the clouds base.
Surprised how much the green is showing through, given that the white is heavy body acrylic. But I kinda like the textures it’s adding.
Still a ways to go, but getting there. 👍

24” x 30” Mixed Media Canvas Update: dragon body art
So here’s how I got to the look I was happy with for the dragon body ….
1. Use palette knife to cover red with thick layer of black-purple
2. Use back end of pottery tool to carve through black-purple to red to create scales
3. Use orange for belly scales
4. Use lighter orange for highlight on belly scales
5. Use gold paint marker to highlight body scales
… and now do the same process for the other 4 areas. 🖌️

Also, different teas will steep for different amounts of time, so you can experiment with that to reduce the tannins as well. I have a black tea that shouldn’t steep more than 3 minutes, and another that can go 5 min and still be good.
And what food you have with the tea can alter the taste of the tea and the food.

Tried a bunch of things on the dragon body. Not happy with any of them. Did finally achieve something I liked, which I’ll share tomorrow after it dries and I touch it up a bit.

1. Backpack - from the Inktober prompt list.
This is my first attempt at isometric art. I used the grid native to Procreate (30 degrees) to block this out … more than once. Given that this took me 1.5 hours, I’m not going to spend time “finishing” it (inking, colors, details). I want to practice getting the objects correct on the grid first, before tackling the other stuff, so for this month, my daily practice will be a bunch of angled stuff.

24” x 30” Mixed Media Canvas Update: now happy with sky (again)
Had a really good art session last night, where I reworked the sky to a state I’m happy with (again).
1. Was going to add stars, now going to do butterflies instead, so wanted a more daylight than nighttime sky. Also been looking at lots of vintage Asian ink landscape paintings and want more of that look for this piece now. So, tried a Neocolor II to lighten the sky. Did not work.
2. Tried a layer of thinned acrylic paint using the sponge I originally got to try image transfers but don’t use in that process because I can’t stand the noise it makes. Worked a little bit.
3. & 4. Brought out the good ol’ Liquitex Parchment acrylic ink. Solves most mixed media issues, or at least gets you close enough to a base state so you can start over again. Worked-ish.
5. Because I didn’t water down the parchment paint, it was too solid of a paint layer, so before it dried completely, I took a paper towel to it, because I’m picky like that.
6. Lovely textured sky (finally). Starting to lighten the bases of the mountains. Discovered how much I love the jaggy mountain edges, especially the top right.
Next will be road work. And maybe another round (or two) on the sky.

24” x 30” Mixed Media Canvas Update: image transfer tests
Day 4 & 5 of the #The21dayProject
I watched a video by Laly Mille, my favorite mixed media artist, on how she uses matte gel medium to do image transfers.
And tried out the process with some papers I have as a test for possible layers on the big canvas.
1. Test supplies
2. Test canvas board with acrylic paint as first layer
3. Papers glued face down then heat gunned to dry because I’m impatient like that.
4. Images transfers successful. Took a few tries to get all the paper off (used an old plastic gift card because I couldn’t stand the squishy screechy noise the sponge made) but I like what I see and am going to try both the origami paper and the printed copy paper on the big canvas.
Next will be image transfer on the big canvas and “road” work.

1. How this evening ‘s session ended
2. How this evening’s session started - Distress Ink on all mountains
3. Splatter, your mixed media frenemy: adds awesome texture, goes where you don’t want it to, turns all clothing into paint clothing
4. The color you decided to use when swatching …. that looks too pink on the actual canvas surrounded by the other colors
5. The color you didn’t pick when swatching because it was too orange that now is the one that looks good on the canvas
6. Happy with dragon road
7. Don’t like the sky
8. Happyish with the sky
Next will be applying spray workable fixative because 80% of this thing is now covered in water-reactive material, so if I try and do anything with liquid, it will move and change and yeah, don’t want that to happen.

24” x 30” Mixed Media Canvas Update: Distress Ink
Day 1 of #The21dayProject to finish this canvas.
Started experimenting on the hills.
1. Outline edge with a Stabilo All Black. Love this pencil. It lays down a rich black that activates with water.
2. Add drops of Distress Ink.
3. Spritz with water to dilute
4. Tap/move ink around with paper towel. Stop Messing with It Even Though It Looks Like A Mess So It Can Dry.
5. Come back an hour later to admire this awesome layer of color you created.
Next will be applying this same process to the rest of the hills, and on the closer hills, more than once since foreground objects are darker than background objects because of atmospheric perspective - not that this is in any way a realistic landscape, but applying concepts like that will help create the illusion of depth.

24” x 30” Mixed Media Canvas Update: selecting colors
In the reference photo, it’s day. I want to put in stars, so my art will be a version of night. That means dark colors: blue and purple.
Going to keep the mountains a version of green, more blue than yellow, likely mixing what I have with the colors used in the sky.
A triad color scheme makes for red-orange as the pop color, which will work well for the dragon, though most of it will be black mixed with the greens, blues, and purple.
I pulled the paints I thought would work, swatched them, then kept the ones I want to work with - purple underlined names on the paper.
As you can tell from the size of the paint tubes, I’m used to working small, so a trip for art supplies is likely in my immediate future. 😁
Next will be trying laser image transfers with my gelli plate!

24” x 30” Mixed Media Canvas Update:
I took the colored sketch I drew in Procreate and divided it into a grid of 6. Printed these out and used them with carbon paper to trace out the design onto the canvas.
Once that was done, I spent an awhile futzing with it, working with the shapes and layout and getting it close to how I want the final art to look, because seeing it there before me on this HUGE canvas made me want to simplify some of the shapes. This is the part of my art process where it doesn’t matter if I started with a reference or traced an outline because I don’t look at that any more; from now on, it’s about what I see on the canvas. Later I sometimes go back to my main reference and even look up others, depending what I need help with: lighting, texture, shape, etc.
Next up will be choosing colors!

I studied German in high school and took an immersive course in Japanese many years ago. It was interesting when studying Japanese that if I couldn’t remember a word, I’d often get the German equivalent, even though I hadn’t studied that language for almost a decade at that point. Poking the same area of the brain I guess. 🇩🇪🇯🇵

2/2: First I recommend you think about how much time and money you want to spend on this website. Sounds like you are in it for the long haul. That said, I recommend you consider your domain name to be the “one I use for a long time” and that the website you build now will change over the years.
Back to Time and Money: Money is your domain cost, which is basically a lease, and you’ll have to renew every year in order to keep ownership of. There’s also hosting fees (you can usually get a deal if you pay yearly over monthly): this is where you pay for space (and a certain level of maintenance) on someone’s servers where the content of your website will exist, and for using the tools to build your website. If you have an email provider separate from the website tool, that will be an extra cost. Some of the WordPress plugins have one-time or monthly costs as well.
NOTE: If you are using an instance of WordPress installed by your hosting service on your domain (compared to using wordpress.com) be aware you will need to maintain the plugins; it’s won’t be a set-up-once-and-it-runs kind of thing. I had a WP site like that for many years and got tired of the backend maintenance. I currently use Payhip.com for my site. It’s designed for e-commerce, but you can also set up individual webpages which I’ve done for my writing and one about Nostr - https://heidi2524.com
What tool you use to build your website will determine how the features you listed that you wanted will layout and display. Most have a certain level of customization (colors, fonts, placement on the webpage, navigation). You’ll have to spend time playing with them to understand how it all works, as each is slightly different.
I highly recommend having a bunch of content ready before you start building the site: text, photos (for your gallery and for the website itself like headers and for categories), metadata, etc. You can change it all later, but having assets ready will help you focus on the building of the site, compared to having to go off and create/find something in the middle of creating your Home page, or Contact page, or a product page for one of your digital products.
Sorry if the above is stuff you already know. I wanted to start very basic so you have an idea of what you’re getting into, because there’s a lot to it if you do it all on your own. 👍

1/2: Npub.pro takes your Nostr notes and basically displays them as a themed website (you pick the theme). It says “Set up any tool for analytics, lead generation, monetization you desire” and has an icon for MailChimp and others, but I don’t know how that work - you can ask @npub1xdt…ntxy about it - he’s building it and is great about answering questions. As far as I know, you can’t integrate with WordPress.
I do recommend you set up an npub.pro website and play with it, but I don’t think it will easily do all the things you want right now. You can go to https://npub.pro, scroll down, and you’ll see the different theme options and example real sites. You can even preview your own content in the different themes to find the one you like.

Unless someone is Banksy level, I don’t understand how an artist who wants to sell their work to a wide audience can maintain complete privacy. Maybe someday there will be Bitcoin-only galleries, but until then …. 🤷
