Decided I'm going to post my own niche content - dgaf how obscure. The network as it is right now has massive inertia from top users and top topics. I'd say an algorithm would budge it. But ultimately, without consistent and pressure (__good__ algorithms, turned on for the majority of the time) the system will go back to how it normally is.
Additionally, if you haven't noticed - btc & the btc posters obsessing over btc have a repelling effect to most people. So we have a preferential atachment model that actively is discouraging for those that don't conform to following the big topics and accounts.

I'll put my two cents in here. Social networks follow the rule of preferential attachment - newcomers will typically come in and gravitate to accounts with a larger number of followers, and their posts will be the most seen. This is just stating the obvious, but also stating that this is a well known phenomena that has been studied in depth.
Now consider this situation, the biggest accounts get the most attention, and then their posts will be on trending. Their posts biases trending, and anyone that wants to go to trending will see the topics that the biggest accounts are talking about, their comments and try to mimic them to get on trending. We see the homogenization of the trending posts, so you know how it ends up.
Its great that users are coming in through larger accounts, but we need to separate the new users from the big accounts and popular topics so that they aren't in their periphery. What is that solution? No, it's not algorithms. Algorithms can help, but its not the knife we need to cut the network. Say it until your face turns blue - It's communities.

I wanted to extract diagrams from youtube lectures. Had no idea how to go about it.
i said:
"i don't know what it is, but if you think about frames in a video, and the screen shows the speaker vs showing a diagram - something is different because the diagram is static, has less movement and less colors. What is it?"
"ahh. I see what you are talking about is entropy. There is more randomness in a frame with movement or a person than a frame with a diagram. here is a function that plots the frame entropy over time for a video..."
and then i wen't back and forth with it to build a whole workflow and make the analysis tool be interactive. So even though it was just a text conversation, by writing the visual features i wanted, it was able to implement it for me. Pretty wild.

We're working on a project that lets individuals connect text together. Think citation (which is also a possibility), but instead of just saying "so and so said this", you actually use the relevant section of text, as a section of your own article. So yes, we're trying to bring math, programming, research, literature and journalism to nostr. But we're also trying to enable a way where all these can mix and match in any way the author thinks is relevant. Taking text objects, and working with them like legos.

I've made a few jokes about this, but i genuinely appreciate the connections and learning I've made through Amethyst, and thank you 🫂.
As communities find use cases for specific apps i'd expect a smaller need for the firehose that is microblogging, and towards a slower, more information rich space as we aggregate to our niches. The everything app will no doubt adapt for such a situation.

We're in a meaning crisis. Increasing resistance against historical societal structures, fragmentation among local communities. You know the story. Polarization driven in part by algorithms, and part by being in such close social proximity to individuals with strong differing opinions. The machine moves foreward without a concern for your needs, existing to just perpetuate itself regardless of what it eats up. Its easy to find yourself lost, unable or out of energy to find a way to improve your situation.
And so meaning/purpose is lost, concluding that you have no other options other than existing in a perpetual state of exhaustion with the world. If you're stuck in that hole, you're left with yourself to decide - do you continue being perpetually parasitized by the system, or do you exit? Especially in younger individuals where experiences are new and have larger impact, there is only one percieved way to exit the system.
