A factor driving the trade war (or at minimum indirectly benefiting from it) is the looming refinancing "wall" faced by the US, with approx $14 trillion in federal debt maturing over the next three years.

In January, 10-year Treasury rates hit 4.8% — these rates would have meant high interest expenses from debt refinancing (compared to the last decade). Cue, the trade war. It's indirectly influencing debt refinancing in 2 ways:
1. Flight to Safety: Heightened economic uncertainty tends to push global investors toward safe haven assets, like US treasuries. And increased demand for Treasuries drives down yields lower
2. Economic Slowdown: prolonged trade conflict can create global economic concerns, causing central banks (incl. the Fed) to reconsider rate hikes & even implement rate cuts, reducing borrowing costs further
And viola, with the chaos of the trade war, the 10-year Treasury yield dropped below 4% today. Lower 10-year yields mean lower future refinancing costs, helping the US gov manage its refinancing wall. But, this is a piece in solving for the massive debt puzzle.

There's an alternative — or parallel — path to manage interest payments without inciting market chaos: Bitcoin-backed bonds.
In a new Bitcoin Policy Institute report, Andrew Hohn & @nprofile…mgt6 propose "Bitcoin-Enhanced Treasury Bonds." They recommend that 90% of bond proceeds finance standard gov operations or refinance existing debt, & 10% be allocated toward acquiring Bitcoin to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. By issuing these bonds at a significantly lower interest rate—such as 1% compared to current rates—the gov can substantially cut its debt-servicing expenses. Furthermore, considering Bitcoin’s historical performance, BitBonds have the potential to considerably reduce or even eliminate the federal debt burden over time.
Adopting Bitcoin-enhanced bonds could thus offer the US a financial advantage, aligning debt management with a new era of fiscal and monetary policy.

Bhutan is executing a model nation-state Bitcoin play:
- Built the largest intentional reserve of 13k BTC (not seized or stolen BTC)
- Accumulating a scarce commodity using cheap, excess hydro at a large scale (larger than El Salvador)

Bitcoin represents an alternative to the global dollar-based financial system, which is dominated by the IMF, World Bank, and Western financial institutions. Much is at stake: if El Salvador were to succeed in integrating Bitcoin successfully, it could encourage other countries to follow suit. The IMF’s condition is likely a preemptive measure to prevent this trend from gaining traction.
𝗘𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱
El Salvador already has a strategic geopolitical advantage compared to other countries that have accepted IMF loans in that they have accumulated over 6,000 Bitcoin.
The US Federal and State governments, other Western countries, and sovereign wealth are increasingly contemplating adding Bitcoin to reserves. As one of the first movers, El Salvador is in a unique position to repay it's debt with potential Bitcoin price appreciation with rising global adoption, unlike other developing countries that continue to take on debt (and loan conditions) via IMF loan restructuring.
Further, El Salvador has implemented soft Bitcoin initiatives like education (see the ES Bitcoin Office's initiatives), which position its people and businesses towards individual adoption and accumulation (vs at a national level). These are more likely to survive government terms and changing policies, and also build businesses that can compete globally in a growing Bitcoin economy.
When El Salvador adopted the Bitcoin Law, it appeared that Bitcoin could be an alternative pathway for developing countries becoming more economically sovereign instead of taking on IMF and World Bank loans. The disappointment observed by Bitcoiners in seeing the conditions imposed by the IMF are understandable. But it may not be black or white -- more time is needed to assess the lasting success of El Salvador’s efforts to become a Bitcoin Country.

Unless Trump announces a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR), his various policy announcements are creating market chaos. Additionally, North Korea's recent hack of Bybit eroded confidence in the market.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government’s focus on fiscal responsibility is not favorable for Bitcoin. Prices could decline further, but there is a potential path to recovery.
For Bitcoin to rally, a few key events need to happen:
1. Trump announces an SBR.
2. JP Morgan agrees to bank Coinbase and Kraken.
3. BNY Mellon begins custodying Bitcoin and enables purchases on its platform.
If these conditions are met, Bitcoin could reach $120K. Furthermore, major donors who contributed millions to Trump’s campaign are unhappy, which may pressure him to make strategic announcements to regain their support.

I haven't done the math, but a few factors to consider:
Additional infrastructure cost of genny
Extent of efficiency losses (new vs old genny)
Price of sats now vs future (some will mine at loss anticipating appreciation)

Gridless has established the first of its kind: a biomass waste powered Bitcoin mining operation in Kenya

Partnering w/ one of the largest sisal producers, @GridlessCompute was instrumental in helping commission a 1.7MW waste biomass power plant at the sisal plantation
Sisal is a natural fiber derived from the sword-shaped leaves of the Agave sisala plant. Sisal is strong & durable natural fiber used to make rugs, mats, ropes, twine, & brushes, as well as in agricultural & industrial products like sacks & reinforcement materials

The leaves are harvested, crushed & scraped to separate fibers from pulp. The fibers are washed, sun-dried, brushed, & graded before being bundled. The sisal plants die after ~10yrs, leaving behind a large bulb. In the past, these redidues were collected & burned in the field
The plantation sought to commission a 1.7MW plant that would use the biomass. But due to covid related delays & the gov canceling a PPA that would permit excess power to feed into the grid, commissioning the plant became uneconomical as it would run at low power & inefficiently. Given that commissioning costs were the same, regardless of generation power, the power plant stood idle & the sisal bulbs were burned in fields, their biofuel potential wasted
Gridless identified the stranded power opportunity & partnered w the sisal production facility, consuming the unused power to run up to 1.1MW of Bitcoin miners. By providing an end use for excess power, Gridless Compute made it economically feasible to commission the powerplant

The power plant is fueled by dry sisal bulbs that would be wasted by field burning. The sisal bulbs are dried, transported to the site, & crushed. Biomass is fed to a vertical suspension boiler via a conveyor system & the boiler produces steam to run a turbine & generate power

Before the power generation facility was commissioned, the plantation faced several challenges. The sisal fiber production facility uses 500kW, but their demand has large peaks, fluctuating between 200 and 800kW. The electricity supplied by the national grid is intermittent, with up to 4 power cuts a day. During outages, expensive diesel generators are needed to supply electricity to the factory & time is lost restarting machines after a power outage
Bitcoin miners are power problem solvers. They're the perfect demand response tool & can locate directly at stranded power, incl waste biofuel. Miners also provide a demand response service as the sisal production facility ramps up/ down to balance the load on the power plant
The beauty of this project is that Gridless Compute supported renewable generation in Kenya, & the 1st of its kind at that. Another incredible case study of Bitcoin miners presenting a novel way to identify stranded power & support electricity infrastructure in a far corner of the world
Lastly this project is close to my heart: my Masters thesis focused on biomass supply availability (for biofuels) & I helped shape biofuel policy in Canada before I joined this industry. So I jumped at the chance to come full circle & visit this biofuel Bitcoin mining site

Today, our Proof of Workforce team made history in Kenya. We presented the Kenya National Fire Brigades Association (KENFIBA) with a Bitcoin donation at the @nprofile…q2hd, helping the union get off of zero. Our goal is to help the Association with their emergency response, membership, & recruitment efforts by placing Bitcoin on their balance sheet

This trip, we met with the CEO & Sec. General of the Kenya Fire Brigades Association, & learned about their work in supporting & unifying the Kenyan Firefighters, & enhancing the fire service in Kenya. We also discussed Bitcoin & its benefits as a tool for unions & wage earners. Kenya, a nation of 56 million people, has ~1,400 Firefighter - for perspective, Toronto, with 3 million, has 3,200 uniformed personnel. Firefighters make $150/month & have no pension (unlike police), so one of the unions goals is to advocate for a better future

I don't understand the folks in my X feed are announcing moving to Bluesky. It offers nothing of value (except maybe the mistaken feeling of a safespace). Its not censorship resistant nor does it offer freedom of speech). It's also not where the momentum/people are (vs X). NOSTR doesn't try to replace social media; we created an ecosystem of apps. With your private key, you can log into a Twitter like thing & your social graph follows. You can go to work on code at github equivalent, go to Google sheets like app & you take your identity. You own, it & they can't shut it down. You hold your data. This allows for creativity
NOSTR moves faster than Twitter wrt development. And no one is asking for permission for themselves. And with each open source success, we gain more confidence
