It's really interesting how our culture still perpetuates the idea that dopamine is a pleasure/reward chemical. The anhedonia hypothesis, from which this idea originated, was shown to be wrong in the 1990s, yet you still hear it everywhere in how people describe their actions.
I think the whole world might understand itself better, and have a better chance of changing behaviours, if we merely took a moment to recognise that our best understanding of dopamine is that it is a pre-reward motivational chemical.
It makes you go after the thing you desire and strengthens that pattern every time you do.
If you introduce uncertainty into the equation (reward amount, timing of reward), it can spike your dopamine by five times, making it unbearable not to seek it, akin to how it must feel being starving for food.
I've studied this in myself for years, and it has helped, though with much failure, to find ways to seek better behaviors. If you don't manage that, at least you might become more aware of what's going on in your own body.

In the 17th century, we believed the universe was a giant machine, shaped by the physics and biology of the time. Earlier than that believed it was hydraulics based. Today, we compare the brain to a computer and seriously entertain the idea that we live in a simulation.
But history shows us that the cutting-edge science, technology and theories of each era often lead to flawed views of reality. The mechanical universe was eventually disproven, and just like that, our computer-based models will evolve too.
What I’m trying to say is, we don’t live in a fucking computer.

As someone who was adopted I would say that, depending on the circumstances of giving up a child, there are real and tangible effects on that child’s life and personality, it can be traumatic. I think ultimately biological connection matters and can’t just be cut off like it didn’t happen. Children need to know what they come, adopted children often feel a sense of not belonging and being lost. I think they need to have the opportunity to explore that at the right time and also be aware of its significance. That comes with potential issues in the family dynamics. That’s just my experience though, it wasn’t handled well and I think often it isn’t but things may have changed with the advice you get.
