Doesn't make them any less of an abusive behemoth to users. They are. But unnecessary complexity is crucial to understanding why FOSS solutions fail with users.
Compare Blender before the 2.8 interface redesign to after, and see how that impacted adoption. It wasn't features, it was usability.
