That mine, under its old ownership before the state had to pick up the pieces, caused some pretty horrid environmental impacts. The Finnish mining regulation lets the claimant and operator off the hook for what they leave behind, and Terrafame is the result. Even if the state managed mine is able to turn the operation into profit, it will never recover the environment - so sustainable, it is not.
Still, at this point better they do something than let it languish, uncared for.
