Christmas Eve ‘22. I was overseas, jet-lagged, and lying awake at 4am listening to a Twitter Space or maybe even a NostrNest if it existed yet, where jb55 (npub1xts…kk5s) and Derek Ross (npub18am…p424) and jack (npub1sg6…f63m) (and maybe QW (npub1tvq…krq4) or corndalorian (npub1lrn…qnw5) at the time?) were discussing the protocol - clients and relays, where Bitcoin might fit in, how to make relays/data resilient through redundancy, and the power of the interoperable nsec.
It was truly inspiring.
Not long after that we started posting Lightning invoices in notes, and then Will got Damus to render those invoices as a visual, payable screen. Zaps followed shortly thereafter, and the rest is history.

I spent weeks testing different wallets to see what worked, what didn’t, and shared what I learned. I put out a call to find other node runners to grow the network and promote self custody. We’ve come a long way since December of 2022. No one can tell me any of this was a waste of time. Every day we see another reason why we need freedom technology, and specifically this.
