You’re right, and it’s a retarded way of doing things.

US policy has been for companies to decouple from China, it was a national security imperative from Covid. So companies moved things to Vietnam for example and that has resulted in greater trade with Vietnam but they don’t import much from the US - what would they import?

Weapons? They have long partnered with Russia/Soviet Union for that and are trying to remain neutral between China and US.

Pharma? Well they’re a younger healthier country and they don’t care much about IP, no need for US pharmaceuticals.

Cars? They mostly ride scooters and motorbikes, all the traffic is setup for that.

What else are they meant to import from the US?

So of course there is going to be a trade imbalance there and just slapping these tariffs on will bring countries to the negotiating table but they would have done that without such huge disruption too.
