I have always had the opinion that it should remain in the same plane. The Creality CR6-SE had an identical setup to the Ender3, where the bowden exteuder was mounted on the X rail. So it moved up and down with Z.
This allowed the bowden path to remain constant, except for the left and right movements of the hotend on the X gantry. I think this helps keep the response of the bowden constant for the entire print, minimizing the change in the filament path as you print, which could affect PA.
