Failed payments don't go unnoticed since the payment processor is flagging them as such. So even failed attempts to contribute to the fund are visible to project admins who have access to the payment processor, even though failed transactions don't appear on the opencollective page. The actual amount of failed transactions is very low.
I never expected financial contributions from people who are already invested in the project in other ways. Some devs have sent non-trivial amounts of money into the gothub fund regardless, but that is their choice. You are already investing time and effort, and as far as I can tell it doesn't sound like you are in glorious financial circumstances right now? By all means, please keep your money. If you were trying to contribute money hoping to secure repository hosting space, I can sponsor such space for contributors. I have spare VMs across two of my personal servers and you would be welcome to use one of them to store repositories.
