Unfortunately, Ukraine has decided to trample on the food security of its neighbours and adopt an aggressive stance, most likely by allowing itself to be manoeuvred by Germany into a diplomatic war. By maintaining the embargo, Ukraine runs the risk that the issue of protecting Polish, Hungarian etc. farmers will permanently enter the EU agenda in the context of Ukraine’s accession to the Union and that market access will be incomplete. The Law and Justice party obviously did not help itself by ignoring the issue of imports for a whole year, but after all, exactly the same has happened in many other countries. It is Ukraine that is going for the short-circuit and it looks like it has overbid, because it could have been done softly.
I find it quite a convincing explanation of what I was myself watching with great surprise, that is the conflict about grain sales unrolling between Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary while EU happily encouraged Ukraine to go on and export! I guess the assumption from EU and its large members was “meh, Poland will need to cope”, but they seemed to forget it’s election period. Or worse even, they decided it may help get rid of annoying PiS in the upcoming elections?
Mielniczek recommendation for Poland and Poles:
From our side? Not to be provoked and do our own thing - and in the meantime finally build that grain port and look after alternative export destinations for the sector. The climate for talks and de-escalation will eventually emerge, but we will probably have to wait for that. Poland has stronger cards, so let’s calmly defend our food security and remind the Ukrainians that we wish them well. They will come around eventually. It’s a bit worrying that the Mateusz Morawiecki government is stepping up the rhetoric so much, unnecessarily in my opinion. Beautiful pictures will come back yet :)
