* You don't always need to self-host literally…you can also use services "self-hosted" by operators you trust, as we regularly see in the fediverse with various instances.
But the point is to use services where it's easy to vet the the folks who run them, it's easy to migrate your data away at any time, and it's easy to switch to true self-hosting whenever you need to.
This is the new software freedom.
