The new battle over software freedoms has less to do with proprietary vs. open source and more to do with centralized cloud vs. decentralized self-hosting*.
Because as we repeatedly see, using centralized cloud services is a recipe for disaster. User data is treated like a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder, good UX is repeatedly set aside in the name of juicing numbers, and you can't even trust the software you use to remain in its lane rather than “pivot”.
