We've seen a convergence between Democrats and Republicans toward this "tough on crime" shit, which has only accelerated under Biden ("fund the police!") and in response to increasing homelessness and economic precarity.
This comes at a time of anti-immigration xenophobia, supported by Democrats by Republicans alike, and when even "liberal" allies seem indifferent to attempts to push Black people out of business and academia and to drive trans and queer people out of public life altogether.
