Oil cars and electric cars both run on energy. Chemical energy, in one case, electric energy in the other, which they turn into kinetic energy.
At this point, ot of all energy we use, there is a big chunk which must come from oil, because it's used in combustion engines. It's true that if all cars became electric most energy would still be produced with fossil fuels, but it would at least allow for the flexibility needed to adopt other sources of energy and, by creating a larger pool of energy which we can source from anywhere, create a bigger incentive for doing so.

It's not the only reason to switch to electric cars. Another, for example, is air quality.
There is also the fact that if you have an oil car you effectively sign up for an oil subscription and you need the system to keep providing you oil (which may mean that your country remains dependent upon countries that have oil). Conversely, if you can rely on any source of energy, you now have a bigger market of suppliers to pick from and aren't tied to a specific energy source.
