Without the backlash against Obama's election, there is no Tea Party or Freedom Caucus. Without the racist birther movement, there is no Trump nomination or Trump presidency.
That said, we are talking about a minority of white people in the country who had this reaction. The majority of young white voters, for example, voted for Obama against McCain and Romney. Between those two segments of the white population there are many who aren't politically active.
