For years my wife and I would pre-open any presents to the kids and, if it had batteries, remove them BEFORE they ever saw the gift.
It was a perfect scheme until the boy, who is pretty observant, got to be about 4 years old. Then he noticed the compartments, noticed what other kids toys did, and starting putting 2 and 2 together.
Now, 4 more kids later, I have the focus of a Mountain Top Yogi. I can sit in the middle of a rock concert and not lose my focus.
