Here in Finland the immediate factor resulting in a right wing government including far right nationalists seems to have been anxiety over public finances in a climate of economic uncertainty and hardship. The media was saturated with fear and blame on the previous government in the months leading to general election. It worked spectacularly well. Has been eye opening for me. I reckon that effect is largely temporary. It's a perfect storm of high inflation, crazy energy costs and rapidly climbing interest rates, that is dissipating.
The nationalists are vocally for backtracking on climate action claiming Finland is doing too much in comparison to other countries. The right is too happy to be in power to really care.
It is also clearly a polarising issue for the nationalists and that bleeds into the center-right, particularly in opposition to the Greens who sadly lost a lot of support. That started before the economic crisis and seems to be due to a complex combination of factors, incluinding being in government, having progressive politics in addition to environmental priorities (so a perfect target), tactical voting, and yes, to some extent being perceived as expecting too high personal sacrifices for the environment. Much of that is probably not temporary.
In Spain, where I vote in general elections, I think economic hardship played a smaller role. Vox overplayed their cards, pushed really hard on extremely reactionary social positions , fortunately crashed in the polls, ruined the PP's chances of governing with any latitude or at all and seems to be eating itself now.
I don't think the climate was a big factor in the elections, even during a heat wave. That is depressing in itself.
It is a polarising issue though. PP+Vox have formed local governments and have done things like removing bicycle lanes which seem to be designed as a provocation.
Hard to say what happens next.
