I think my recommended distros would be Vanilla Debian (except for very hardware less than a year old or so), OpenSuse Tumbleweed (if you need the latest version of everything and are willing to put up with some minor foibles), Linux Mint for newbies, and maybe Fedora for someone wanting something that's more up-to-date than Debian, but not cutting edge, and are also willing to invest a little more time learning how to make that distro work for them.
