@npub19lh…3d6f Premise is false. The root cause is that reading the longform articles is pointless. They're all filler and fluff aside from one or two sentences of information. If you expand the article to read the detailed facts enough times and find no facts, just drivel and language intended to manipulate your opinion, you learn to stop expanding them.

@npub1tfe…pkwj "Because it was one-pass" is not the reason. "Because of translation units" may be the reason. It's not that it can't seek in the file it's processing, but that it's not allowed to process unboundedly many other source files (which would take unbounded resources).
FWIW, in many ways C header files vs source files fulfill the same role as interface vs implementation files in Java. So I wouldn't say other languages lack analogous things entirely.

@npub1tfe…pkwj Which is a bad thing. Header files don't exist because compiler can't seek. They exist because changing interfaces is a change that consumers of your code need to see, vs changing implementations. Headers preclude changing public interface signatures without explicit intent viewable in change logs.

@npub1tfe…pkwj It's NOT ridiculous. Separating compiler and linker was a brilliant design choice to make is possible to build arbitrarily large programs (1) with O(1) build system resources, and (2) with very small incremental build time.
"Modern" workflows that do CI shit, rm -rf'ing and downloading and rebuilding from scratch every time you make a change, are a bane to productivity, to the environment, and to ability of ordinary ppl to build and hack on stuff.
