After many years away from the stage, I am back! It looks like I’m accepted to give a talk at the Matrix Conference (https://2024.matrix.org/) to present ✨ native simplified sliding sync ✨: how it differs from the first version of sliding sync (an experimental project implemented inside a proxy), how we’ve implemented it inside the Matrix Rust SDK etc. Gonna be fun!

The Matrix Rust SDK now provides a room list that is sorted on the client-side instead of server-side, https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk/pull/3585/.
It has landed in Element X iOS nightly and soon on Android.
I’m going to publish blog posts to explain all the technical details but it’s really pretty neat!

The idea is pretty simple but clever: cache the output of proc macros, if it hasn’t changed, no need to recompile the associated code.
The author explains the caveat of this approach as not all proc macros are pure.

Cargo now strips debuginfo from stdlib by default for a release build, thus saving 4Mb on the resulting binary. That’s really great!
The author explains the process to collect the statistics, to reach maintainers, to write a proposal, to implement it and to finally see it getting merged.

Firefox 121 supports tail call elimination in Wasm. That's really great!
Specification is here, https://github.com/WebAssembly/tail-call/blob/main/proposals/tail-call/Overview.md.
It adds 2 instructions: `return_call` and `return_call_indirect`. It helps a lot for functional programming languages, or languages with coroutines or continuations.

Element X on iOS has been released on the App Store. It has exited TestFlight, it's still a beta.

It uses the Rust SDK behind the scene (https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-rust-sdk). Bindings for Swift and Kotlin are generated by UniFFI (https://github.com/mozilla/uniffi-rs), and it supports `async fn` in Rust! I'm preparing a blog post to explain our awesome stack.
