When you want to export a video from an #iPad, transferring to a far more reasonable filesystem over on a #linux laptop, what app do you use to do that? No I don't want to use AirDrop, as I have only one Mac device (and never want another).
The Files app in iPad OS can connect to an SMB server, but only in read-only mode. The SMB server absolutely supports read-write, when other kinds of client connect. This is mildly infuriating, as this "one-way street" behaviour in iPadOS is clearly a walled-garden sort of limitation.
I found a #Warpinator-compatible app for #iPadOS, but it just transfers one file at a time. This is the best I could come up with. Alas, there is also no #syncthing for iPadOS. 🤷
Note: Syncthing would be my preferred way (I use it to sync between Android <-> Linux as my goto network file sync solution).

@nprofile…g4yp Can geoblocks be set up to stop signups from certain countries? Like if there were one or two countries, or IP ranges where I didn't want to allow signups from them, could I do that? I would still accept email from any IP for relaying purposes. Just signups - new local account creation - was restricted.

Something that's been concerning me for a long time is how people don't want to leave social media platforms, even when they turn more toxic. The term these days is "enshittified".
I, for one, really appreciate #Mastodon for allowing one the ability to migrate from one instance to another, thereby not losing one's ever-so-precious "social graph".
Another interesting example of not losing one's "Social Graph" (in a migration from one server to another) is #Deltachat, which uses "AEAP" ("Advanced Email Address Porting").
I think these awesome migration features should be praised more. Taking such control back, over one's social graph is no small victory these days. Such ease of migration is a bulwark against enshittification; it's the easy ability to more elsewhere.
Note: #Buddhism has a comparable tradition of such protection through migration: once monks and nuns gain their "independence", they are much more free to wander from one monastery to the next.

I find reading suttas/Dhamma ebooks is another burst again in high-quality information density. I do a lot of promoting of this with the people around me in my life.

@nprofile…alh2 Since #Android is so much more overwhelmingly popular in #India than #iOS, it makes sense to make a push for #XMPP/#Prav there. iOS/MacOS XMPP clients are sort of the Achilles heel of the XMPP world, but this won't really be an issue in India! Nice one, Prav! Prav cleverly turned this "weakness" into a strength. :dy62:

In order to try out Multi-User chat in #Gajim, I looked for lists of popular Public "Group Chats". I came across "The top 25 public chat rooms on the Jabber network": https://search.jabber.network/channels/1
The fullest groups seem to be the support groups for XMPP clients/servers like Gajim, #Conversations, and #Prosody. You might scoff I even tried these out, but _it was a start_, especially to try the "Joining" and "Leaving" process. *These activities - especially the very simple and quick "Leaving" process - are a non-trivial ability these days, in a world where closing accounts is about as easy as escaping an alligator.* They worked fine. No problems.
There's a huge number of people panicking about how sketchy ("enshittified"; fraught with "proprietary lock-in") all the popular online services have become. How about make your own Public Group chats, for any and all of the #Facebook groups, #WhatsApp Groups, and #Discord "servers" you are part of, and thereby try to gradually provide/advocate an "out"? Maybe even mirror the announcements from the more popular groups into your own Public Chat groups.
How about take on some leadership, if only as a form of action and protest, offering an alternative, and thereby *making a statement that a federated alternative indeed exists*? You might not be taken seriously at first, but if people are indeed *upset enough*, maybe your protest might actually catch on?

After taking a closer look at #XMPP clients for the #linux desktop, there's this frustrating "tie" for finding a favorite.
#Dino, which is likeable for being able to do video and audio calls, only has limited support for multi-user chat (complete with fancy moderation tools). These audio and video calls it can do are AMD64-only at this time.
#Gajim, which is likeable for being able to do multi-user chat well (with great moderation tools), alas, can't do audio and video calls to the other XMPP clients (like, say, #Conversations, as they use a newer #WebRTC-based method now).
So there's this strange situation where one is tempted to use both at the same time.
My takeaway is that #Conversations for #Android is the only xmpp client that I would possibly and carefully recommend to family and friends at this time, as it can cover all of the above. (#Monal on #iOS/#MacOS only has "partial" support for Multi-user chat, BTW.)
Yes I'm aware of the existence of Snikket, Quicksy, and Prav. No need to chime in on those.

I might log into #Facebook about once every 2 or 3 months - to discover I missed nothing to speak of. And I only log into Facebook on a device with no webcam, microphone, or personal data. It's a Raspberry Pi.
I strongly avoided ever creating an account there, until I was trying to find people to sign up for a weekend #meditation retreat I was offering back in 2024 - and other people suggested promoting the event on Facebook. Alas, this complete waste of my time attracted no additional signups. It was word of mouth within the Buddhist community (non-Facebook communication) which brought me every signup; it wasn't Facebook.

Several monastics I know recently went to an Asubha event (viewing dead corpses), called "Silent Mentor" in Kuala Lumpur. Contemplating death is believed to me a good spiritual motivator, when you are a #Buddhist monk or nun.
I didn't attend, but on this topic of Asubha, I have a true story to share.
The night before I left for this current monastery, I went downstairs to get water. This involves briefly going outside. When I pulled the door shut behind me, entering a kitchen area, something was stuck in the door. I was about to pull on the door hard, to close it, but then thought - no, don't force it. I looked behind me and the largest House Gecko I've ever seen in my life, by far, was lodged between the door and the door frame. It was trying to get outside, which is very strange. Usually they only go in one direction - inside the building. Anyway, its rib-cage was squashed totally flat - reduced to about 2 millimeters. Half of his body was inside, and half outside the door. I opened the door, and the house gecko scurried about two steps down the door-frame with its front legs, to withdraw itself from harm's way. But it could scurry no further, because it's spinal cord was severed, and its back legs wouldn't listen any longer. It looked straight at me with its 100% cold emotion-less lizard look, then wiggled like crazy from side to side, and I could see exactly how much spinal cord would still listen - about half total. Its front legs flailed in the air, side-to-side madly, but its hind legs clutched to the door frame in a death grip. Then it just gave up, clinging to the door frame, facing downward, unable to run any further downward. It wasn't bleeding, but I could see faint red stripes exactly where the scissor pinch had occurred across it's chest. After about 30 seconds, it let go with its front legs, wanting only to fall to the floor. But its hind legs wouldn't give up on that death grip on the door frame. It just hung there, about 1.7 meters off the floor. I came back about 30 minutes later, and it had fallen to the floor, dead on the spot. Ants were starting to swarm onto the body (it was about 25cm long), so I swept it up and threw it over the fence into a sort of back alley. Had I gave that door a firm closing pull at the start, I would have badly severed its body in half, with guts all over the place for sure. I'll never forget how it struggled and flapped the front of its body about desperately - with zero emotion on its face - in total shock, with its freshly-severed spinal nerves. This was super creepy, and like right in my face, only about 30 cm away, with my flashlight shining right on it.

The Internet is a very high tech place when you think of all the underlying protocols, built on a geek's culture valuing open communication, open protocols, etc. which would have made the founding fathers of the Age of Enlightenment proud.
But then with the advent of #SocialMedia, the #internet #culture underwent a massive retrogression back to medieval thinking - eschewing open protocols with the advent of mobile "apps", building proprietary castles with "walled gardens", and it turned into a big high-school popularity contest for likes and followers.

What if there was one day a year which was "boost extra-generously Day", on #Mastodon? Like you should intend to boost at least 50 things that day, just to ensure everyone who needs it can break out of a "Boosting-Scrooge" mentality?
Just like #Thailand has Songkran - and everyone goes wild soaking each other with water - I think Mastodon needs a similar predictable day where everyone goes wild with the boosts.
