@npub13fd…pkcz @npub1gmx…atcq To me, it is more frustrating and sad than scary. For instance, when my son video chatted with his friends while he was sick, they all said they had never had COVID. My son asked how that could be - those kids never wear masks to school. I had to explain to him that they probably have had it but they don't test for it like we do. Kids don't get it as badly as we adults, but they can still spread it. And there have been more COVID deaths in Florida kids than there were at the Marjory Stoneman Douglass Parkland school shooting. We changed our behavior and our infrastructure completely for that, but we do nothing for COVID. Frustrating and sad.

But it was obvious that this was the standpoint of her office, with several other pediatricians in the same office. Also, they had a sign saying that if your family does not believe in vaccines or wants an alternative vaccine schedule, we will help you find a practice that is better suited for you. So they have some things right...

@npub1gmx…atcq My son just contracted COVID, tested positive on Thursday. I called the pediatrician on Monday for a doctor's note for school and they said he had to come into the office. I thought that was ridiculous, but wait. They told us to wait in the car until a room was ready. When we went in, no one up front was masked and the nurse had a mask under the nose. The doctor came in and then put on a mask. She counted the days since the test and said he is good to go back to school. No one cares about COVID anymore and you don't need to test him again unless you feel some sort of obligation to your community, she said.
Today he has a previously scheduled dentist appointment. I called to cancel yesterday, and they said as long as the doctor (who doesn't care about COVID) is OK with it, he can come in.
This is why we will have continued waves of death and disability.

@npub16gl…syzj @npub1f6a…pnql From my understanding, using large language models to code in different languages where one may not have the syntactical knowledge is certainly like rocket fuel for getting over the learning curve. But people who really understand the syntax of those languages say that the code produced is generally inefficient and can be simplified many times over.
To me, this is different than students using to pass a test in grad school with prose based answers. Here, the LLM generally wrote very well (spotless syntax), but the ideas are off, non-committal, or specifically wrong. I have heard of too many instances of the code written by an LLM just flat out not working.

What I see happening without drastic legislative changes is that only those who can afford to buy homes with cash will be able to own homes because then insurance is optional, and the rest of us will be renting a exorbitant costs. Nearly none of us will be covered by any insurance. I would like to hear from those economists now!

@npub189n…satx This one really gets under my skin. Rick Scott (old governor of Florida) used to use this rehearsed answer whenever asked about climate change. Ron DeSantis adopted early in his first term as governor.
But, you know what? These two signed the paychecks of many excellent climate scientists working at state universities in Florida. It is a fundamental breakdown of society when leadership fails to use expertise and caters to corporate interests instead. And those asking the climate change questions should have always answered with, "But why don't you ask the experts in climate that you employ?"!

We generally don't bring the accents when we import these words, and with no familiarity with French I think most would pronounce it cash (or maybe even catch). Hearing more and more about the police seizure of a newspaper's office IT equipment in Kansas, and several things are becoming clearer than ever:
1. The US should not be entrusted to guard the free world. If local police are doing this, imagine what our military can do when it starts to favor the autocratic tendencies of this country over the wished of the people.
2. Police will also fall back on "we were just trying to keep you safe" excuse. In this case, they claim to be investigating identity theft. If you called the police about your identity theft, do you think they would respond this way? No. Do you think there is a way to prevent identity theft while allowing a newspaper to function? Of course. They are up to something else, but hiding behind the authority they think they deserve.
3. If the police continue to go rogue and militaristic, and they circle the wagons whenever they do something wrong, what value do they add to our communities? This question's importance is as clear as ever.

I do know that if one had tried to publish such modeling results 10 years ago, it may not even have made it through peer review. I've always held that the shocking figure @npub1mhz…wteh and colleagues published in 2007, observations of sea level tracking along the highest bounds of IPCC model forecasts (below), showed that climate denialism had crept into the scientific enterprise, or that we completely misunderstood the physics of our climate system that we were so willing to modify for the economy. I favored the first explanation - that caustic politics had quenched the highest modeled rates of climate change as simply too inconvenient to believe and/or to publish. I hope someone sorts through the scraps of unpublished model outputs to figure out what physics may be responsible for such a change in the ocean's expression of heat gain.

If you get paywalled, the gist of the article is that #DeSantis resurrected a State Guard that is in our Constitution. He told the voters that this would be for helping Floridians after disasters like #hurricanes. Some who joined have quit, though, because they are being trained to be paramilitary and people fear that the force will be used to crack down on people using their freedom to gather and to protest, as well as undocumented workers in the state. And, even some retired military veterans have said that the training is abusive and, like most things Republican, without any meaningful oversight or direction. Reminiscent of the #BrownShirts .

I find it odd that this article doesn't mention fraud. According to the small, thinly-capitalized insurance companies here in Florida who have DeSantis' ear, it is fraud that is causing our rates to go up. In other words it is the consumers' fault. This is the complaint that got Amanda Gorman's poem, recited at Biden's inauguration, banned in a south Florida school.
The complainant thinks the poem is written by Oprah Winfrey. The complainant also thinks they don't need to consult professional review of the work. They claim that the work confuses, indoctrinates and sends hate messages to students.
Worst part? The school district actually acted on this. One complaint gets a book banned, but numerous schoolhouse gun slaughters can't get guns banned. 'Merica.

I have a friend who now wishes he hadn't been vaccinated against #COVID19. He gets this point of view from
1. Voices like Joe Rogan and Russell Brand and
2. A deep hatred of capitalism and #BigPharma.
I share with him #2 but, as a scientist, can't stand #1. I don't understand exactly where these voices arise, perhaps from hatred and mistrust of a bad economic system which profits from our illness. But using mistrust of a system that exploits us to further hurt us is stupid. But judging by the numbers of followers, engagements, likes, etc., he is not alone. And there may be another simpler answer...
