Is there a way to just straight-up force terminate a `.task` in SwiftUI? I'm not saying "ask it to please terminate when it's convenient 🥺", I mean "kill yourself right now and throw an error"
I'm running into a problem where I have some resource-intensive tasks that the user might want to kill, completely disregarding their current state. I tried looking it up, and every tutorial I've found is about the former variety. It might not be a best practice, but I swear I have a use case

Does anyone out there have experience with Fedora Server just randomly shutting down and then refusing to restart properly? I swear it happens to me every month and I don’t know why. Sometimes I have to do a manual power cycle, and sometimes, not even that helps and I have to login manually (it’s a headless server).
It’s not power interruptions, I have backup power. It’s not the BIOS either. I’m thinking it might be some auto update shit.

Guys, I have a revolutionary new idea on how to solve traffic and make travel more accessible
First, we take multiple cars and have them drive behind one another
Next, to make them faster, we build a special lane for them so they aren’t slowed by other traffic
Then, to save on fuel, we have them drive on low-friction metal tracks. As a bonus, they can now go 3x faster
And finally, to make it even cheaper, we introduce a model where you can rent a seat, so you don’t even need to pay for a car

@npub1u24…32pl Oh yeah, it’s very random for me as well. I’ve noticed that sheets and buttons enforce the new syntax (which I have to spend whole five short, but extremely annoying seconds to change to the old one every time!), but many other elements still retain the old syntax.
Another crazy thing I’ve noticed is that some bindings get autofilled to .constant(true), which is bizarre to me 😅

@npub1u24…32pl I’ve noticed that in the latest version of Xcode, Apple started forcing a different closure syntax [.sheet(isPresented: $whatever, content: {}) instead of the .sheet(isPresented: $whatever){}], which I thought was another such guideline.
If these guidelines took a similar approach, and would suddenly mark my every newline bracket as a style/guideline violation (like Swiftlint does it), it would make my coding experience magnitudes worse :/

I have severe astigmatism. If there's code on two subsequent lines, they blur together and I can't see them properly. This is why I seem to be the only Swift developer in existence who writes like this:

Hands-down, the most useful part of ChatGPT is translating the borderline incomprehensible English from our JIRA issues, written by SMEs who barely speak English, into something that I can actually read.
For this, I use a Raycast AI command with a pretty short prompt.
Works like a charm about 95% of the time.

However, when the original M1 came out, reviewers were explicitly saying that the 8GB model is good for almost *everyone* - Including programmers and video editors.
I remember some YouTuber, not sure who but they are very famous and reputable, saying that the 8GM M1 is more than enough for iOS programming. That the machine beats 32GB Intel Macs. Which turned out to be a complete lie now.

@npub14vs…5ya6 I fell for the “8GB in the M1 is the equivalent of 16GB in other computers” thing and it was a huge mistake
Reviewers was saying how it’s enough to run many tabs in Safari, while editing videos and watching 4K content. Same with programming tasks, everyone was saying it can run multiple xCodes no problem.
However, the truth is, I can’t even run the iOS simulator on this machine. The moment I start it up, it lags so bad it’s unusable. And Blackmagic Resolve is the same

Update on my balloon cheek:
The swelling is slowly decreasing. I don’t have any pain anymore, only annoying pressure that makes me want to clench my teeth on that side, but I luckily can’t die to my mandibular joint being so immovable.
I only had to take one painkiller today compared to five yesterday, so the progress is noticeable 😊
Using an ice pack works wonders.

I really hope the next iPhone will have USB-C. I really need to replace my 12 mini at this point, the battery is becoming unusable. But USB-C is a requirement for me.
I‘m planning to get the Pro this time. Although I hate the size (the size of the mini is perfect), I think that I’ll be focusing on battery life a bit more this time.

I was surprised when I found out that KFC in the USA is, to put it mildly, abhorrent.
Here, while KFC is not the height of fine dining, it offers pretty nice quality. The meat is always done well the restaurants are clean and modern, and you get a lot of cool items (like fried cheese blocks in my part of the world, as tasty as unhealthy)
I was there today and someone complained that their drink tasted weird. They immediately had 5 guys disassembling the drinks machine and deep cleaning it

I can sympathize, I spent half a year temporarily disabled like you (a botched reduction of my chronically unstable shoulder, which left my right arm so painful I couldn’t use it).
I made extensive use of AppleScript to create various control flows, which worked in tandem with a StreamDeck that I used for more complex workflows.
It made me realize just how important accessibility really is.

Just can’t eat anything for the rest of the day, but that’s all! Nothing hurts apart from my throat, so it’s going swimmingly 😊

Come on people, stop breaking Cork’s licensing. I already had to take down four different people who were selling Cork without my permission without any changes; not even is that unethical, but it goes against the license.

@npub1gqn…0pj6 I have a design in mind, which is basically a Toggle that, when on, would show a picker that would let you select an end date (see attached picture).
I guess the question is actually „What is the best way to create a new object from data from a Form“.
Now, I have a @State var at the top that basically creates an object with dummy data, and the form binds to various properties on that object and changes them. Is this considered best practice, or is there another way?

In SavedTrip, I have an optional endDate (I think the optional makes sense here, since people might not have a specific end date in mind). I would like to have a DatePicker bound to this optional endDate, to let people pick the end date, but also make it possible to not have that date and leave it nil. How can I do this?

Hey guys, a quick question about SwiftData.
I have two models, SavedTrip and SavedPlace. I’m trying to create a relationship between them, in which SavedTrip contains an optional array of SavedPlaces. However, I’m getting a crash when a SavedTrip has no SavedPlaces (this should be possible, since I marked SavedPlace as optional).
What am I doing wrong?
I’d appreciate any help. I’ll just be going to sleep now, since it’s 1AM here, so I’ll look at the responses tomorrow.

Found this funny bug in the latest Xcode beta / iOS 17 beta.
When you have a List with an EditButton defined, alongside an .onDelete action and open up / close a sheet, the delete buttons briefly flash.

@npub1lgx…a2zf I use TM extensively. Did multiple full restores from it and it works great.
My current setup is a 2TB USB HDD, plus a 5 TB custom NAS running on Fedora Server. I have a 10GB LAN and my MacBook is connected to a Thunderbolt dock with a 10GB LAN port, so even the networked backups are very speedy.
Honestly, without TM, I’d be too lazy to do backups 😂

That would, however and unfortunately, not work with the “Saved” feed

I transitioned my Reddit browsing to RSS.
There’s a little-known feature in your user settings that lets you subscribe to RSS feeds made up of your subscribed Subreddits, your saved items, you name it.
Go to https://old.reddit.com/prefs/feeds/. There, you can subscribe to your various feeds using RSS.
You can also subsribe to any subreddit by adding /.rss to its URL.
I have no illusions; this will most likely be discontinued soon as well. Until then, it’s the best was to browse Reddit!

Smart Folders are a greatly underappreciated #macOS feature.
I’m working on some documentation, making lots of screenshots. I needed fast access to the newest ones so I could edit them, so I created a Smart Folder with the newest pictures for all docs.
Same with quick access to only German versions of images - Smart Folders to the rescue! Created a Smart Folder to only show images that have DE in their name.
I don’t know how I managed to sleep on this feature for so long

This update includes a German translation, courtesy of https://github.com/hecaex, as well as some bugfixes relating to Cork not finding some users' Homebrew executables, which would cause it to hang.
Cork is Always looking for translators, so if you feel up to it, try translating it into your language! So far, Cork can speak:
- English
- Chinese, Simplified and Traditional
- German

Hey guys, a quick Swift question about arrays.
Suppose I have an array like this:

And I want to transform it into a dictionary like this:

NEW VERSION OF MLEM IS OUT
This update is big, and there's more coming later! This update addresses these issues:
- New icon by the amazing clay! Stay tuned for more icons, including Pride! In the future, you will be able to choose between lots of icons, and submit your own
- A whole bunch of crashes related to loading communities
- Some posts showing multiple times in the feed
- (Hopefully) accounts being deleted between app launches
- A few issues logging in

Just discovered a weird SwiftUI quirk:
When you have a `ScrollView` with the `.refreshable` modifier, and then have another `ScrollView` in a `.safeAreaInset` on the `ScrollView` parent, the `ScrollView` in `.safeAreaInset` still triggers a refresh

I have to give a huge shoutout to @npub16d6…7ys4 for creating https://mastometrics.com/. Truly a marvelous product, looking at lines going up and down has never been so fun!
It also helped me discover that I must've said something controversal on April 15th, which made me lose like 6 followers in two days 😂

#[0] #[1] I don't know what to tell you. You just want Mastodon to stay niche? And you'd prefer that the majority of people keep using these walled gardens, privately owned by people and corporations that only want to use them for profit?
I don't know how to get it through to you, but people don't want these walled gardens. They only use them because the decentralized alternatives refuse to make themselves more approachable to the average person.

#[0] #[1] That's wrong, people come to Mastodon to escape Twitter. There's no other MO, that's literally it. They just want stuff to work the way they're used to
Nobody but a few nerds cares about the "mission" or promises of "decentralization." Those are just buzzwords that tech nerds convinced themselves everyone else cares about as much as them, but they don't. People just want a better Twitter
And Mastodon doesn't even have the basics right. No wonder people aren't coming

I've been saying it for months, but every time, an army of "free and open source enthusiasts" would come out of the woods to argue that making it easier for people to join is bad, actually, and that if you don't want to learn 100 new terms and workflows that normal people don't care about, you don't deserve to even glance upon the holy grail that is Mastodon.
