In my work for SELF and understanding the structures of Sovereignty, our founder gave me some great areas to consider and questions to answer. Thought I’d share those with you all.
For an individual, sovereignty means having the freedom and autonomy to make personal decisions and live life without external control or influence.
Sovereignty is a word that gets thrown around a lot lately and is often used in a way that is 1. hard to relate to your everyday existence and 2. hard to apply in ways that feel helpful.
At SELF, we think that the most important thing to understand is that sovereignty is a layered concept that touches on personal identity, social interactions, and external relationships in different ways.
Here's a guide on how we see personal freedom through 3 layers:
1. Intra-personal sovereignty
This dimension focuses on your relationship with yourself, where you answer critical questions like:
- Identity: How do I identify with myself? What aspects of my being define who I am?
- Values: What matters most to me, and how do I reflect on these priorities?
- Self-awareness: How do I evaluate my strengths, weaknesses, and growth areas?
Developing intrapersonal sovereignty requires self-reflection and a clear understanding of one's core beliefs and motivations.
It's about aligning one's identity with values that foster self-respect and clarity.
2. Inter-personal sovereignty
This perspective examines how individuals interact with others and how these relationships shape their sense of autonomy.
Key considerations include:
- Perception: How do I view myself in relation to others?
- Relationships: How do my interactions support or challenge my sense of self?
- Boundaries: What boundaries must I establish to maintain mutual respect and personal integrity?
Interpersonal sovereignty is about fostering healthy, balanced relationships where individuals maintain their autonomy while respecting others.
3. Extra-personal sovereignty
The final lens explores how the world interacts with an individual's sovereignty. It addresses:
- External influences: How does society, culture, or external systems impact my sovereignty?
- Engagement: How do I navigate external pressures without compromising my core values?
- Adaptability: How do I maintain autonomy while engaging with larger systems like governments, organisations, or communities?
Extrapersonal sovereignty emphasises the ability to interact with external forces in ways that protect and reinforce one's autonomy.
