I saw this vaguely-remembered movie trailer, maybe last year. Was hoping someone could help me find the title.
The premise, I think:
A black celebrity comes out of self imposed seclusion to find civilization mainly deserted. He scrounges for supplies and tries to team up with other survivors.
The threat turns out to be some bizarre glowing patterns of lights that manifest in the air.
Maybe partly comedy.

Before maybe 15 years ago, my sense is that folks still felt (or maybe were taught) that civic institutions and social obligations were worth the effort at least to some extent. That freedom and responsibility hung in a balance, which could be shifted a bit but both were necessary. Even religion (in my experience) seemed to be more publicly about loving your neighbor and even enemy.

Like: some jokes that used to be seen as inappropriate but not morally reprehensible, wow will now get people shunned. Advice about health has changed, and there are more rules and obligations. There are more rules about how to treat people, and language to use, and use of cultural elements.
Rules about how to dispose of materials, land use, and all kinds of things.

At some point a bunch of pictures of liminal spaces, like those in closed or abandoned malls or offices, started showing up on the web. And eventually “the Backrooms” cohered as a thing, presumably inspired by some of these pictures. I mentioned the Backrooms to my kids a couple years ago and they were already familiar with the idea. It sounded just like any other trope to them, though I still found it kind of fascinating.

Reading J.G. Ballard’s short story *Report on an Unidentified Space Station* years later, I found it even more intentionally focuses on the liminality of a strange space, rather than the scary or threatening nature of such a locale. The place is sort of a vast transit terminal, full of familiar things, but not conducting one to any actual transit or destinations.

The idea of larger or more complex, seemingly intentional, modern liminal spaces in fiction didn’t really start to gel with me until I read ‘House of Leaves’ by Mark Z. Danielewski. And even that plays up more the strangeness and threatening nature of the space, rather than its “between states” quality.

The author suggests that in folklore and older stories, the defining quality of things being fae or fairy-related is that they are liminal. They are associated with times, places, situations, or appearances that are in a “between” state, simultaneously familiar or known and weird or unknown. Like: places where the woods meet fields, abandoned places humans inhabited or used, vacant crossroads, twilight, half waking states, autumn (neither fully winter or fully summer), etc.

A couple movies that are far from perfect, but I really love that might *kind of* fit:
Dark City - The feel of the place, and certain themes really get me. It's one of the few I have rewatched multiple times.
The Village (2004) - It has too many twists (cause I think it's really three tonally different movies squished into one). But I still really like the odd but very normalized feeling of the situation, the characters, and the feel of the place they live.

The original scifi short story was optioned by Hollywood in the mid-1940s. But The Birdcage would famously languish in development for four decades, gradually being altered and adapted into unrecognizability by studio execs. The eponymous comedy starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, which eventually emerged from this process, was much beloved at the time but bore little resemblance to the original tale.

Tangentially:
Maybe 20+ years ago, someone (maybe Anders Sandberg?) came up with a Rote (magic-ish procedure) for the old Mage: the Ascension RPG which simply caused all particles/waves in a piece of matter to individually sync their angular momentums.
Objects this was used on became impossible to rotate. But the effect was technically plausible, so didn't produce Paradox (side effects).

In a sudden flash forward, I realized that Shyamalan had "Punked" us:
We had been led on an elaborately designed wild goose chase all around odd parts of the city (maybe Brookline Massachusetts?).

"Latchkey kids" was a term I didn't understand when I heard it on the news as a kid in the 1980s. It's one of those terms like "Gen X" which apparently applied to me, but I didn't realize at the time.
My parents were still married, but often both working or out of the house. So it was routine for us to let ourselves in and be at home for awhile for a good chunk of grade school.
Snippets of news reports I would hear at the time made latchkey kids sound like some poor unfortunates.

There will always be aspects to some people's religious (or anti-religious) or philosophical outlooks which feel so crucial that they need enforcement, and might conflict with others stances on these points (even within Christianity, there's conflict over moral justification for the death penalty).

* I'm obviously not opposed to people converting to Christianity. But from everything I've ever seen, forced or even merely pressured conversion is harmful and creates longstanding resentments. Secular institutions exist (or should exist) as an intersection of things that constituents find mutually acceptable, and to the extent possible, to live and let live with the differences.

I can understand the justification of ethno-religious groups having long standing association with a region what has shaped them and they have shaped in turn.

* On a U.S. constitutional level, requiring a governmental institution to provide the Bible in these numbers (no mention of other religions' texts?) sounds like it should be a clear 1st Amendment violation. Unless advocates are going to try and bring this before a conservative Supreme Court to try and overturn the precedent that these constitutional protections apply at the state level.

I remember one or two stories like this from a book of Celtic fairy tales. Something to the effect of a fairy wife saying if her human husband ever struck her three times, she would leave forever.
But then the "strikes" ended up all being non-violent things like tapping on the shoulder to get her attention.

I have felt the truth of this in my bones for years. Like everyone shows up Tuesday wondering where their stuff is and expecting things to get done quick cause they are finally in a hurry.
The only positive, in my experience, is that people are generally more taciturn on Mondays and just seem to tolerate me. While on Tuesday they actually come across as more genuinely happy to interact with me.

This is something I've come to think of as the modern crisis of epistemology:
If you aren't expert enough to know a thing, and aren't exposed enough to specialized knowledge on a regular basis to even get a vague sense of what is likely/unlikely, then you will have to trust experts (or text created by) to inform you.
But how do you learn to judge who the real experts are, when you lack expertise yourself?
And when you lack expertise on how to evaluate claims objectively?

I'm sure they're not necessarily the most effective polearms, but I always found things in the Partisan, Glaive/Fauchard, and Bardiche styles to be most aesthetically interesting.
Also, always loved this polearms family tree diagram someone posted on Wikipedia years back.

Not sure if it is the same where you are, but anecdotal comments from a few teachers I've heard seem to suggest a combination of social isolation during covid lockdown and online activity might be causing difficulties with students handling in person interactions well.

Decades ago, in a Philadelphia newspaper, someone published a (humor? satire? opinion?) article entitled "O’Shaughnessy's Cube", alledgedly named after the barstool philosopher who came up with it.
O’Shaughnessy's Cube evaluates all humans on a 3 axis continuum:
Neat–Sloppy
Industrious–Lazy
Smart–Stupid
The conclusion is that Neat-Industrious-Stupids are the biggest danger because they get a lot of bad ideas accomplished and aren't stopped cause they make it look okay while doing so.

I'm better now, but most of last week was horrible. Like the worst I can remember dealing with daylight savings switch. Usually I adjust after a day. Last week I was exhausted and falling asleep on the sofa for like half the week.
Is this what middle age does to one?

His YouTube was the first thing I thought of when the topic came up. You do have to wonder how they got from anti-radiation to making it radioactive. "What can protect me from radiation? Maybe... STRONGER RADIATION! Use radiation to fight radiation!"
Scummy radiation was a break from Clive's usual coverage of scammy electronics. Though IIRC, some devices turn out to be functional, but with odd circuit design choices.

* Slinker - Capable of great stealth and tracking ability. Always turning up where you're not wanted.
* Stinker - Always have a cunning plan in the works. Probably involves betraying your traveling companions.
* Look foul but feel fair - A really decent dude, but you hover in the corner of bars unsettling everyone.

I had a similar fractured tooth. Was horrible.
The dentist complimented me on being chill while the two halves were extracted. But the tooth removal was relatively painless compared to the preceeding days of agony. Actually was a relief.

Is there some more frequent connection
with mills and black magic? I'm aware of the film Krabat.
Maybe the idea that one may gain wealth through something else doing the work would seem quazi-magical or dishonest to an older mindset? Just guessing.
But maybe the connection isn't as common as I speculate.

I was bemoaning recently that in the 1990s and early 2000s we had some pretty engaging conspiracy and weird phenomenon fiction and games (X-Files, Tim Powers, World of Darkness, etc.).
The implausiblity of it was generally assumed, and the trick was to at least semi-justify in the fiction why folks in the real world don't experience odd things much.
