In case you missed it, I have serous reservations about Mastodon's proposed implementation. The fediverse is not a dictatorship, and ideas spread here based on merit and consensus, not decree. But I'm not here to throw rocks. I'm here to present an alternative.
Permissions are based on the 'canSearch' attribute, which is an array of actors, groups, lists, follower collections, etc. which are allowed to search each channel. A public search will contain the ActivityPub public inbox, for example. An empty array means nobody can search your stuff.
A site search is the aggregation of individual channels on the site that allow the visitor to search their content; and the instance provides its own 'canSearch' attribute for the actor record of the instance (at the site root). So each search requires permission up and down the stack with you providing the final say. This has no linkage to user discovery; which uses a separate permission.
Searches return ActivityPub collections when fetched with ActivityPub headers, Nomad collections when fetched with Nomad headers, and text/html when fetched with a browser. Pure fediverse implementations need only support ActivityPub. Would be quite happy to work with other federated communities on further standardisation and refinements. For now you can provide feedback and discuss this in the @@npub1yml…x54a group (https://unfediverse.com/channel/streams) and I'll create a separate working group if there's enough interest. Would love it if somebody would like to step in and create the FEP for this as my available time is quite constrained. This implementation will run on a rasberry pi or shared hosting using any search backend you wish to implement.
What opensearch brings to the table is a standardised and mature specification related to discovery of the search endpoint(s).
Since we already support federated search based on this model and also have long-standing support for opensearch, merging these should be not be terribly difficult -- and is currently in progress.

I'm happy to annouce that the #streams app is now available on #YunoHost. As it is my very first package for this solution, I admit I'm kinda proud. Hence the frame.
If you have a YunoHost server running you can find it in the Application catalog. For the moment, it still appears there as a broken app. This is because the bot that updates the apps integration level only runs every friday. So, on the Github repo it shows as an app with Integration Level 7 (on a scale of 8, yay!) while in the admin of your YunoHost server it appears as broken. Should be fixed next friday or saturday.
For the moment the LDAP integration is not configured. This means that YunoHost users can't connect with their YunoHost usernames and go straight to channel creation. My next task is to see if anything can be done on that matter. I don't know zip about php so I'll probably be asking for some help with the ldapauth addon.
That's it for today, and that's quite a lot. I hope this will help those who are still hesitating about setting up their own server to make the leap.

Je suis heureux de vous annoncer que le package #streams est maintenant disponible sur #YunoHost. Comme c'est mon tout premier package pour ce système, j'avoue que je suis un peu fier. D'où le cadre.
Si vous avez un serveur YunoHost, vous pouvez trouver l'application streams dans le catalogue. Pour l'instant, elle y apparaît toujours comme une application cassée. Ceci est dû au fait que le bot qui met à jour le niveau d'intégration des applications ne s'exécute que tous les vendredis. Sur le repo Github, elle apparaît comme une application avec un niveau d'intégration de 7 (sur une échelle de 8!) alors que dans l'administration de votre serveur YunoHost, elle apparaît comme cassée. Cela devrait être corrigé vendredi ou samedi prochain.
Pour le moment, l'intégration LDAP n'est pas activée. Cela signifie que les utilisateurs de YunoHost ne peuvent pas se connecter avec leur nom d'utilisateur YunoHost et aller directement à la création de canal. Mon prochain objectif est de voir si quelque chose peut être fait pour y remédier. Je ne m'y connais pas du tout en php, je demanderai donc probablement demander de l'aide avec l'addon ldapauth.
Voilà, c'est tout pour aujourd'hui, et c'est déjà pas mal. J'espère que cela aidera ceux qui hésitent encore à mettre en place leur propre serveur à franchir le pas.

Delivery Reports: In a decentralised multi-platform world, stuff happens. Sites and networks sometimes go down. Project developers sometimes introduce bugs and incompatibilities. This allows you to determine what happened to your post or comment and where it actually went once you published it.
Failsafe: Because the best time to have a current backup of your data is 10 seconds ago. Clone your online identity and content to multiple sites using the Nomad protocol and mirror any changes in near realtime. Then, if your chosen site goes down (either temporarily or permanently) or you get booted off of it for some reason, your online life doesn't have to come to an end or force you to start over. All your friends and all your content are available on any of your cloned instances - at any time.
Provides the ActivityPub "Client to Server" API for use with external apps.

You can find the Zot6 spec in the Hubzilla repository. Nomad is basically Zot6 but with a handful of additional anti-monopoly features. These have not yet been documented.
Nomad is our "plan B" against monopolists that desire to Embrace, Extend, and Extinguish us. I used to say when/if, but it has since become clear that we aren't welcome in the ActivityPub fediverse.
The high-level overview is that just like streams sites have no brand identity, they can also have no protocol identity. The Nomad fediverse is more like radio. You'll tune into the fediverses you want to communicate with and be completely invisible to "scanners".
This work is nearly complete. I'll push the current spec once all those bits are in place.
